I remember installing and using fish 4 or 5 years ago; it was not a great experience -- but after he "took over", I switched and couldn't be happier with fish.

No. The first few chapters might sound a bit off-putting (though, personally, I like it), but it gets much, much better after chapter 4 or 5. And after chapter 10, it is just a joy to read.

If you're into audiobooks, don't miss the podcast: http://www.hpmorpodcast.com -- It is excellently read by multiple voices.

You're most likely familiar with Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London" and "The Road to Wigan Pier", two of the finest books ever written.

The first is his "vivid and moving account of life below poverty line", first in Paris, when he, after resigning being a servant of the Empire as a police officer in Burma, had to resort to low-wage, hard, menial 17-hour works in Paris restaurants, and later when he lived as a "tramp" in London, going from spike to spike, meeting others like him.

I don't know if you'd "enjoy" these books though... But they are unrivaled in their shrewdness and, well, it is Orwell and he can write better than anyone.

I also wanted to say HPMoR :) if you want to start, I'd suggest listening to the excellent podcast: http://www.hpmorpodcast.com - the first 10 episodes are slightly amateurish, but after that it's really, really well done.

I would say HPMoR is like Gödel Escher Bach, but slightly simpler and more approachable, and looks at stuff from a different angle. And Eliezer is an excellent writer, just like D. Hofstadter -- and his style is even more fun!

If you're on HN, then you'll enjoy this book immensely.

Ordinarily, Cmd+` switches between windows, but when you're Cmd+Tabbing (when the switcher is active), Cmd+` is essentially the same as Cmd+Shift+Tab (i.e., it selects the previous application). It's actually much more convenient to press Cmd+`, if you get used to it :)

You can use JetBrain's AppCode if you dislike (despise) Xcode :) It's written in Java, but at least it doesn't crash every couple of days (possibly corrupting(!) .xcodeproject files).

And the Modern ObjC (with ARC, @properties, blocks, new @literals, awesome and useful clang errors, etc.) is much, much better than it was around iPhone OS 3.0! The signal/noise ratio of a typical iOS app is now maybe twice that of an app written in the bad old days.

When tab-completing a file, fish will first attempt prefix matches (foo matches foobar), then substring matches (ooba matches foobar), and lastly subsequence matches (fbr matches foobar). For example, in a directory with files foo1.txt, foo2.txt, foo3.txt…, you can type only the numeric part and hit tab to fill in the rest.

This is really brilliant! I always wanted that (without knowing it).

Is that an m4b file (the "official" way), or just a collection of mp3's shoved together to form a book ("Part of a compilation")? The former has been broken (especially on iPad) since iOS 5, and the latter has many issues but at least you "can" see how many chapters there are, and select them.

The sad thing is that they don't give 3rd parties access to m4b metadata (chapter name, length and cover), and they themselves have broken their Music.app's ability to parse them. So nobody else can fix this mess.

Just FYI (almost certainly of no importance because this individual was chosen at random for the slides): his name (both first and surname) are Persian. It might have faulty implementation for how it glues security features together, or encrypts the traffic data. I think the parent comment is talking about this kind of "audit" (i.e., not theoretically, but in action and by perusing the source code).

As I understand it, HFS+ can silently corrupt your data; so, Time Machine could potentially propagate that "corrupt" data all the way through your backup disks (and possibly wipe out older, "correct" data!)

We need integrity checking both at file-system level and at backup-solution level. If I'm not mistaken, with Time Machine on an HFS+ volume, we don't have the former, and the latter is file-based and not block-based (making it not very efficient, space-wise).

BTW, I didn't find "Reset Firefox" in the about:config page - it was in Help -> Troubleshooting Information.

I have the latest versions of Safari and Firefox, on the latest version of OS X. Safari has about 15 extensions, has been used daily for the past 5 years (and I haven't deleted its history, though I clear the cache one every couple of months). And I use Firefox "only" if I need to access the web-based GMail (which happens roughly every 2 months), and there are no extensions installed in Firefox.

Considering the above, Safari still is (much) faster than Firefox on my machine. I don't care if it can render JS 5% faster - the whole experience is sluggish and slow on my machine. Of course, YMMV.

Just wanted to point it out to you that there are legitimate reasons why people say Firefox is slow.
