your sales game needs to be world class though. that’s all that really matters.

did you feel proud when the eu passed the cookie law? are you proud every time you have to wait for and click through a cookie modal? (never mind the development costs)

you might end up with an ad- and app-store- riddled europhone and if you decide that you want to buy a us or international spec iphone you won’t be permitted to do so.

the cookie law should have ended up with a browser setting. but eu bureaucrats apparently don’t know the first thing about web standards (and why would they) so we get every single website in the world having to code a custom dialog, and billions of users having to click through them forever. this legislation is the eu cookie law writ large: well meaning, ill conceived, government overreach by bureaucrats who don’t represent or understand the companies being affected. it’s a sad state of affairs when the most significant contribution of europe to technology is not technology, but bad legislation with massive global implications.

if apple were worth more than all of the other personal computer makers combined (maybe it is idk) would that also be a sign of a bubble? is that all it takes or does growth rate matter?

i like the idea that uncle bob subscribes to and teaches a certain style or school of coding. kind of like judo vs karate etc..

Same. I wouldn't have expected this amount of vitriol on a site for science and technology enthusiasts and hackers -- people who often are the builders in society -- about a guy who ... successfully builds electric cars and spaceships.

It's a shame because the thoughtful, moderate commenters just leave and are less likely to come back.

And btw SpaceX laid off around the same pct of workers a while back and they're doing fine now. Same with a lot of companies, some of which I was working for at the time, and I don't think their leadership was evil.

i’m done with dealerships. i wish ford and gm had created clean-sheet, direct-to-consumer sub brands for their electric products. and didn’t gm do something pretty radical when they rolled out saturn in the 80s (separate dealers with non commissioned staff)? they could have at least done that. instead we get markup and sleaze.

My brain is a very bad virtual machine and it's very bad at parsing diffs (even GitHub ones), so I like to check out the code under review locally, browse it and see what my IDE says about it (thank you JetBrains), run it, and run the tests while stepping through the code. Makes a big difference.

i saw sagan speak at berkeley in the mid nineties. he was shockingly and brazenly rude to the person running the a/v setup, through his microphone, so the entire overflowing audience could hear every last detail. it was way over the top. appreciate all he’s done for science and outreach but it seems he had an intense personality.

i work from home and have the option to work from an office but the office is shitty and has an open plan. so no, i’m not going to commute 1.5 hrs round trip so i can be uncomfortable all day and be distracted by my coworkers (who i like otherwise).

but give me an office with my own space, a nice view, natural light, and a walkable neighborhood, and i’m very much in.

if i could distill clean code into one word it would be “small”. small functions, classes, files, changes, and iterations. i don’t see anything wrong with this but understand there are differing points of view. what i do think is important is that developers get placed on a team that is aligned with their taste. how you feel about uncle bob can be a revealing interview question.

is it just me or does the la times drag tesla at every opportunity? could it be because the owner of the la times, patrick soon shiong, has a company called nantenergy that seeks to compete with tesla? at a minimum, there’s a conflict of interest.

and, kind of a tangent, but where are the articles about the thousands of lives lost due to the incompatibility of trucks/suvs and sedans in crashes actually causing thousands of lives lost per year?

it’s orders of magnitude worse than mere profiting from inside knowledge. these people make policy for the entire country and they have conflicts of interest.

Tiny countries with very low medal counts could be considered flukes, but not New Zealand with 20 medals and a population of 4.8M. That's one olympic medal per ~240k people. (btw I'm not from NZ :)
