Respected the process for getting on Fidonet. You had to figure it out, configure it properly and prove you were ready to go before you got a node number. No hand holding. Frontdoor and national mail hour.

I was unfamiliar with that model. UNIX machine. Here is more info:
Yes, it does. Family member in the medical field is experiencing issues.
How do you know?
Unsure, but Google paid.

because we had thermonuclear warheads and there was no point - and they told us that!
Agreed. No duck and cover. The transition was from "hey do these things to survive" to "hope you are in the blast radius".
Sort of tossing the baby out with the bath water.
If anyone posited alternate origins except what was the accepted leading thought of the time, they were ostracized across many segments of society. It became one of the things you couldn't discuss publicly.
Many topics became like this during covid including your mention of school closures. Weird time.
Very often a headline is all someone needs or wants. That has value. Without anyone clicking through to the web site, Google is getting the value from the headline, and contributing nothing to the web site in return.
So the solution Google is proposing works out for everyone. Canadian news sites can ensure people go to their site for headlines and Google can no longer show information for those sites. The Canadian news sites should see increased revenue in terms of subscriptions and advertisements.
When do replacement subreddits start forming? /r/picsnew or something.
I think that is the response to someone trying to refresh quickly. Happened to me after receiving errors.
Aquifers are intriguing. They are so large a person has a hard time realizing over a period of time how the land is affected when they are tapped. Subsidence is hard to wrap your head around.
San Joaquin Valley is a good example.

And then what?
The way I read it, the author of the article isn't wanting an expanded internet. The author's focus seems to be on siloed places to exist online.
I was confused as they lament the loss of google reader. You still have those options available through RSS using other tools. At the same time they prefer a regulated, regimented site with rules and expected behavior. UGC will always have all sides of cultures, viewpoints and opinions, which is what the internet on whole provides.
It appears to be over except for Dallas Love Field Airport.

Ah the classic PR blur. Could mean anything from "all good" to "we don't log - ignorance is bliss".
After what lastpass did I cannot trust any self reporting.
Alexa is an important tool for our family. My hope is amazon doesn't abandon Alex, but limit what it does and charge a subscription. We use it for alarms, timers, drop ins (inside home and outside), announcements, weather, news, music on Amazon prime and making calls. Simple things that don't require add on skills or advanced commands. Works solid for our needs and it would be difficult to replace. We never buy anything using voice commands.
The problem is a family like us. We haven't bought a new device in 2 years and still use some of the original pucks. Amazon will need to make money somehow so I think a yearly subscription would work. Then again, if it isn't a growth segment I cannot see a tech company keeping something in today's world.
I spent 2 weeks in an ICU due to an appendectomy gone wrong followed by growing open wound and infection. Horrible time from a mental health perspective with visual and auditory hallucinations, feeling of paranoia concerning the medical team and nightmares. Hallucinations and paranoia stopped before I was discharged, but it took a couple of years for the nightmares to subside.
Post-intensive care syndrome is something that happens that hardly anyone who hasn't been in an ICU knows about. Even when I was in the ICU the medical team never discussed it with me. My running joke to deal with what happened is that I aged 10 years the 2 weeks I spent there.

term to start the timer was "timer 1 hour".
Works for me, but it is hidden under the Videos results below the fold on the page. Looks like they switched positioning.
It was in the normal position yesterday.
The Seattle Times joined followed a carb boat in April of 2022.

The captain's take on the issue includes climate change, over crabbing areas known to be struggling and trawling. The article also includes an explanation as to how cod could be responsible due to climate change offering less ice protection for the crab.
Outside of war efforts, have societies ever made sacrifices for the greater good?

don't understand what NBER is.
There is a consideration that NBER isn't the issue. yes you are correct, they make a determination. I think the difference this time is that you have what was commonly accepted among normal people that 2 quarters negative meant recession. This time there is pushback against it.
I think the hang up is more political than technical. When the opposing party controls the white house there wouldn't be broad support for "let's wait and let NBER make a determination."
Hope that helps somewhat.
That's not how recessions work.
I am unsure the point you are making. My point was related to mindset and I should have clarified. If a group of people, normal non economic expert citizens, believe a recession is here they change their behavior. The media plays a part in amplifying it. At that point it doesn't matter what is happening at a macro economic level.
I am for introducing nuance to the judgement of a recession or not. I am not for doing it right before numbers are released the admin saying, "Well, there is nuance in the determination" before the numbers are released. At best all you are doing is introducing confusion to the non economic expert citizens and at worst you are attempting to gaslight people.
I hope that helps explain my thoughts.
That the definition of a recession has always been 2 quarters of negative GDP. The administration now believes there is nuance in the numbers, so what was the accepted definition in the past is no longer.
The fact the media on whole has decided it's ok to redefine a commonly accepted definition when the administration promotes it lends itself to the media being a mouthpiece for the administration.
I am willing to understand nuance and a changing definition, as I am sure there are parts of the economy people are learning to deal with. Gig workers, workers headed back from retirement and more. This doesn't even touch on the self fulfilling prophecy of hearing that the country is in a recession.
I am less willing to accept a change in a short timeframe and right before numbers are released.
I was also under the impression it was from 1835. It is actually 1,835 modern hospital price lists.
local news that has shifted to be digital.
Our local newspaper has a few actual journalists reporting on what is happening in government at city, county and state level. Just a few since all the layoffs. Sports is hanging on, but has been taken over by The Athletic.
Real journalism concerning business, arts and suburb cities is gone. The only time it is legitimately covered is if it is being covered elsewhere by local TV stations.
The newspaper website is a malignant entity infecting everyone with trackers and ads.
They are attempting video, but it lacks the content and production of even a mildly successful youtube creator.
I still subscribe to the digital product to help support the remaining journalists.
We have done this for workstation refreshes (Windows 10) and it works marvelously.
Reliability has been fantastic. We keep 2 machines as spares for parts and have experienced an issue with one power supply.
PC Health Check reports it doesn't support secure boot, no TPM 2.0 and the CPU isn't supported. We haven't tried to install Windows 11.
The model we went with was Z420s.
