That's a great question! Feedback from employers about graduates have always been around new graduates and hires not being 'work ready' - and we've found many colleges aren't flexible enough to solve this problem quickly.

So our solution was why not give that training that makes everyone 'work ready' accessible to the world? That way when people do hire, they won't have that complaint anymore and people will know if they'd like the actual job itself!

Thanks for that feedback! One of the reasons we settled on an online course system is because they allow anyone, including international students on visas or students from other countries, to have a chance to upskill with these big firms.

We do take your point though about slightly different outcomes for people in different regions. We'll look to make that messaging clearer!

Thanks for the kind words abhinuvpitale! Yes, this is exactly what we found - there's an irrelevance to some hiring processes because they tend to ask obsolete or academic questions.

One problem with asking pragmatic questions is that not everyone has had a chance to do practical work - hence why we also tackled that problem with an educational lens too.

(Re: Meteor) Our company is scaling up and we're worried that Galaxy won't be able to handle growing demand - do you have any thoughts on making the meteor system more scalable and affordable as companies get larger?

I love meteor, and don't really want to move our stack off it but it's becoming a more real thing that we have to face in the near future as it's hard to see how it can grow with us!

I can only imagine the reason galaxy revenue is increasing is that the companies started off Meteor 2-3 years ago are now becoming real. I know a few companies in our YC batch that use Meteor.

A Question: is there a way to block your website from being rendered in Europe, if you aren't sure if you comply with GDPR?

A question: What's the best way to keep ourselves accountable to the tasks of "talking to users", "do things that don't scale" and "writing code" every week?

We write a weekly report, and set milestones to go for each week - but it doesn't feel like these things focus us our attention as well as they could be.

Most resume's in non-technical fields (think management, banking, consulting, law etc) will have line items of deals/projects/responsibilities with rich information of how many people they've managed, the size of the deal, type of work etc.

Most of the time people don't want to post this on LinkedIn as its too public of a space to go about bragging of your achievements at employer X. With this system, Google basically has a window into this more specific information.

It's easy to forget, but LinkedIn doesn't have rich resume data of candidates. With Hire, Google now gets rich resume & employee data - data, when coupled with search history, that can now be used to build better user profiles than before.

Given this, "Hire" is (or could become) a trojan horse into replacing the network effect that LinkedIn has created.

What level of maths are you exactly looking at?

Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/) has great resources for all levels of maths up until the first year of university - easily the friendliest and most comprehensive set of classes and topics for maths until that level

MIT Open Courseware (http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/find-by-topic/#cat=mathematics) has many courses that you can pick from and start to learn from. For these it doesn't hurt to see what textbooks they're using (if any) and purchasing them and going through the problem sets yourself.

The great thing about maths, is that until you get to the very high levels, many problems can be checked against pre-made answers.

As mentioned in the comments here, there are companies like MongoDB, Wordpress & Spring Framework (of which its parent company was sold for 420 million dollars) which have open source products at their core and have been successful companies financially.

I would argue though, that many of these successful companies are more platform providers than SASS.

There's forgotten dimension being a good consultant and that's to only make sales when you have the opportunity and ability to remain independent and be able to provide recommendations that your clients might not want to hear, but need to hear. Too often, consulting firms incentives are aligned to making the sale and getting the next cheque that they'll be willing to compromise on their recommendations and solutions in order to please a manager within their clients - often whom have a specific thing they want to achieve which might be unaligned to the overall client's best interests.

Because of this, consulting exists somewhat differently to startups as well. In the startup world, your aim is to delight the customer. If you apply that same principle, you'll be tempted to say things that make people happy. I'd argue proper consultant or advisor in any field (whether IT consulting or management consulting) must be able to make a judgement concerning their expertise or their analysis regardless of what 'wants' to be heard by their prospective client (in lieu of how much they might be paying them).

To add to your point, we cannot prove or disprove the existence of causation (Try to conceive a falsifiable experiment about causation and I would argue you would end up with a metaphysical crisis). The 'is-ought' issue David Hume showed, where just because something 'is' a way does not indicate how it 'ought' to be or will continue to be, has highlighted to us how difficult it is to think this problem for hundreds of years. Another way to look at it is to ask "Who or what is to guarantee the law of physics will remain the same tomorrow? What is to stop the speed of light changing to 1 mile per hour?"

This isn't to say the article posted is of no use. Having a 'graph-like' mental model of how things work is incredibly useful, as most education simplifies real-world problems into a few key issues. Although most non-computer science issues can be reduced successfully using the 80/20 rule in real life, sometimes some problems require us to look at the 100s of contributing factors to allow us to solve the problem we're facing properly.

The more 'graph-like' problem solving becomes acceptable as way to solve issues the better of everyone will be.
