I was recently kicked off of Facebook for lack of an "Authentic Name." Humorously my name was my legal name.

Getting kicked off of Facebook was the best thing to happen to my productivity and mood. My only frustration is that there are several people on Facebook I have no easy method of giving alternative contact info to.

I think it is a bit of a generalization to say younger people mix business and personal lives.

Opposite of you, I'm in my late 20s, the youngest person in my organization; and I get Facebook friend requests from people in their 40s and 50s that I only know at work.

Perhaps it is more accurate to say people who do not have the same values in privacy as you use things like Facebook differently.

I received an email from Vanguard regarding $20 for taking a survey. It seemed phishy as the domain that it was sent from wasn't @vanguard.com (or similar) and the enticement of a monetary award.

I contacted Vanguard regarding this and forwarded them the email. The representative thought it was a phishing attempt as well. I was later contacted by Vanguard and they told me it was legitimate. I was even able to contact the person that wrote the email through a Vanguard number.

Many cards in America have foreign transaction fees. There may be other fees associated as well.

That said I have looked into cards with no foreign transaction fees for future international travel. They do exist, but one more issue is making sure they support "chip and pin" for European countries.

Currently cmus has been my favorite. Just another option.

Without altitude and temperature a Mach number is rather useless. (Depending on altitude the temperature and pressure changes which has an effect on the speed of sound.)

I know from my experience with Flash on Linux that it is insane, Flash eventually consumes 4gb of memory and slows my computer to a halt. I finally just removed the plugin and browse without flash.

SXSW isn't a tech conference. It's a music/film festival with an "interactive" section.

I don't think I would consider the interactive section which is primarily made up of bloggers and web startups(and not focused on the tech they use) as a tech section. Bloggers are not tech oriented(unless they primarily write about some sort of new technology).

I went a few years ago for just the music festival and had a blast. Andrew W.K. showed up and did a scavenger hunt under a highway overpass. I had one of those expensive badges and found other badge holders were pretty nice. Chatted with someone from SOMAFM for a while.

Actually radio stations pay licenses for rights to songs for satellite/internet radio, while music is sent to radio stations for free through promoters.

I work at a small college radio station (http://kmnr.org) we have been working with SoundExchange to get licensing for internet broadcast in addition to our radio broadcast.

Things like this completely devalue the MIT Media Lab to me. I can only hope the creator did not receive a Masters for this.

I'd agree with that completely.

My roommate recently interviewed with Facebook(we attend a state school in the midwest). The other candidates were going around saying where they were from, many were from Stanford, and when it came to him they basically snubbed him afterwards.

That said in programming competitions we've beaten schools like UIUC.

This doesn't mean NASA as a whole uses it. It really comes down to who is in charge of the project.

Some NASA centers in certain departments mandate the use of certain technologies, for instance .NET and sourcesafe.

I worked on some internal projects at NASA and used git though. A buddy of mine at USGS uses git for all of his work.

I'm a Debian guy, but I gladly put Ubuntu on family/friends computers.

The big plus on Debian/Ubuntu for me is the package manager.

A lot of technology still needs to be developed before something like this is viable, but if it were possible a trip to mars travel time would be cut down tremendously. If I remember right there were two launch windows a year using that method.

I was taught cursive in elementary school and promptly stopped using it because I found it hard to read.

I'm now taking a Russian course(for fun) and my teacher explained that Russians do not print. I'm now at a disadvantage at reading written Russian(cursive), not only because I cannot read cursive, but also because I'm not as familiar with Russian as English.

There is a little bit more to it than that. NASA is not just a space agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

NASA also does a lot of aviation and other research besides just shooting people into space and playing golf on the moon.

The reason for launching in Florida is because if something goes wrong they can initiate the termination system and anything that falls out of the sky will be in the ocean, opposed to a populated area. Other NASA centers in other states are useful for shuttle returns. Often when bad weather is occurring they send the shuttle to land at NASA Dryden.

I'd say his terrible negligence is in having no professional ethics as a journalist. I expect a journalist to do some fact checking.

As far as I know all government machines are running FDCC(Federal Desktop Core Configuration) and the machines I've seen run IE7 with many IT departments recommending Firefox.
