ARRI has a specific look and almost perfect directly out of the camera. Compare it to Red or Sony Venice and you see that it is the most appealing. You can make other cameras look like it, but ARRI is just industry standard and produces amazing colors. Their sensor is just fantastic.

I wonder what the breakdown of software used for VFX is in this report? There are tools like Adobe After Effects that doesn't run in Linux. I know about Fusion and Nuke, but wish the report recorded what software was being run on each OS.
The problem I have with articles like these is that my definition of Web3 is quite a bit different. I tend to lump "crypto" more with NFTs, wild speculation, scams, heavily VC backed "decentralized" tokens, etc. But on the other hand, I want social networks not owned by businesses, I want other major utilities also not owned by major companies (I think gmail is used for 8bn addresses). I think the fediverse is nice start, but still not decentralized enough (a single mastadon server admin can kill it anytime they want or change the rules). In my opinion the definition of web3 is:
"Web3 represents a fundamental evolution of the internet built upon blockchain architectures. Moving from centralized control and capitalization to a decentralized network where the capital is distributed between the operators and consumers."
I feel like the definition of Web3 is hijacked by pundits. Probably because it has become yet another buzzword and being so tightly associated with Crypto maybe has it tainted forever?
This is the problem I have with Erlang developers. They only want to work on Erlang. Pragmatism be damned. It is never about the product or the company. It is only about which of the remaining 20 Erlang expert personalities in the world do they get to work alongside with. If there needs to be a special library, all other existing ones are garbage unless written by one of the 20 above, so they will just write their own. I hate to stereotype here, but I would never ever (again) bet my company on Erlang. It is insanely difficult to recruit for. They are truly some of the best developers in the world, but lack pragmatism for problems and every one problem can only be solved with functional programming using Erlang. In my experience, Erlang developers are Zealots for the language and nothing else. If your company decides to pivot away from Erlang to another more accessible language, say Go, you are likely to lose them all.
Helix just has better out of the box experience. Will take you like 5 minutes to setup instead of 1.5 weeks. It is just so much easier to start a model editor if you havent used one before.
Love this!!! I am huge DaVinci fan because it runs cross-platform (yes linux too). The price is amazing for such a high quality product. Need to see what you really can do on the iPad, I doubt the VFX stuff is there. But this is great.
Java was great at the time it was created. But now, I think there are several better languages that are more suited for today. Like Go as an example. Easy to develop and easy to maintain. You get very good performance for little effort. It is just my personal preference, but I don't care to maintain Java or JVM anymore. FWIW, I was at the very first every Java One conference. Have used it for many years.
It is just my preference. But your right, java is very "enterprise" hence my trepidation. I think there are much better enterprise worthy languages now, like Go. Which are far easier to develop and maintain.
Nice to see stuff like this. But won't use it since built on Java. I try to avoid the JVM as much possible.
Keep in mind that most options have an expiration date on when they can be purchased after the employee no longer works at the company. Furthermore most option agreements have a ROFR clause. I would say let them have the options. There is good chance they might not even execute them in the required window.
I would love this if it wasn't also built on the Java runtime. I hoped the "from ground up" rewrite to include a new much more performant backend that didn't burn resources. To be fair, I even think VSCode is too slow. I have been loving Helix Editor since it gives a great out-of-the box experience for terminal. But craving a better VSCode replacement. Had high hopes for Fleet, but I guess you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

I may be in the minority opinion here, but I think the biggest issue was the product constantly changed and tried to be too many things. The product-market fit seemed to be on be "The GraphQL" db. But they really just did all this other complex stuff and by the time they were going in that direction ran out of steam. I don't know Manish personally, but there seems to be a lot of negative sentiment about his management style. He has been quoted as say (to the effect) that his engineers were not as good as him and he would have to go in and "fix" stuff. That seems wrong to me. Either he is a the best programmer in the world or didn't hire well. Not really sure tbh. But I wanted to love the product but it had too many poorly working features and could have de-scoped a bit and made them good.
FWIW I am really excited by surrealdb. I think it is the sweet spot that dGraph should have been.
Wow, well said. It is so true that effective programming really requires a lot more support, especially around the product/business/project side. The smaller clear the chunks of work, probably the easier it is to reason about and complete.
Maybe I should have qualified my statement. Regulation needs to happen around these Centralized exchanges and lending platforms like Celsius. So they don't over leverage their positions. DeFi should be completely decentralized (not your keys, not your crypto), but we still see middleman everywhere trying to extract value. If you are gonna act like a bank and be in custody of tokens that belong to your customers, then some regulation should be in order.
I think despite what the sentiment is, there is real value in crypto/blockchain. I mean if the US Government turned the dollar into a digital currency, wouldn't the sentiment change? Wouldn't DeFi be better with regulation? All the benefits of cryptocurrency/smart contracts/DeFi are real. The problem is there is no regulation. Without regulations most people are going to optimize for self interest. That is really overshadowing the potential. It will eventually change for the better.
I very much think this is a pragmatic approach. I also truly wish for a LinkedIn and Facebook without a single corporate entity profiting in the middle (decentralized/web3). However, for this to ever truly work, the UX just has to be heads and shoulders above this approach, imo.
In it's simplest terms the aim of Web3 is simply to remove anyone in the middle monetizing both the production and consumption of services in a completely decentralized way.
Both federation and p2p still require some kind of centralization, currently. Furthermore, there is no decentralized governance nor incentive mechanisms. "Web3" is simply bringing a decentralized approach to p2p, governance and operations. Doesn't necessarily mean a token that is traded on an exchange. But what blockchain (and more importantly the consensus models) bring is the ability to create a decentralized FaceBook, WhatsApp, Insta, etc. allowing anyone participating in the operation of the network and anyone able to consume the network without anyone profiting in the middle. I think where opponents get hung up is the incentive mechanisms. Today the good is so overshadowed by the scam/bad. But if you want a good example of a shared utility build on blockchain look at Helium.com. It is a global wireless network operated by people that host their own hotspots--a true utility model. When you look at some of the services we use on the web, they are utilities and there are real value in both delivering them and consuming them. This is where web3 is trying to tie that all together so some giant company isn't in the middle monetizing both sides.
The web isn't free. It is bought and paid for mostly by advertisers. I have seen web3 as a way to democratize the operation of services/apps people use and depend on.
Literally, if there was some decentralized advertising network, that paid for web3, it would be literally no different than it is today except maybe the people making money in the middle would be taken out.

But compare the long term costs. I think there have been countless examples of going from Ruby to Go and eliminating 80 to 90% of needed infrastructure. I can't begin to estimate their infrastructure costs, but if they are spending $1M/mo and you can eliminate 90% of that. That is not peanuts.
How much did they spend to write this compiler? Also, I would say they spend at least 5 or more hours per weak writing tests to handle all edge cases for any new code they commit due to the language being dynamic? Also, what kind of community is there for a custom compiler as well as the non-standard high performance things like using CRuby. I think it is easy to assume developer productivity is increased--and I think it is for small/medium projects. But at this scale and complexity, my assumption is that they are likely spending more development resources to support the language in their high performance environment.
I honestly love Ruby and Ruby on Rails, but I can't understand why companies like Shopify and Github go through so much effort to scale Ruby especially at their size. Maybe I am wrong, but couldn't this effort be put to rewriting parts of it in a more performant language like Go or Rust? One has to imagine that they have a large code base, how much developer time is spent writing Tests for Ruby? How much time was spent debugging odd monkey patching gems over the life of the codebase?
I do get that developer time was/is more expensive than servers. But I am not so sure at some level of scale. When you need 100 servers vs 5, and need to spend so much testing effort dealing with dynamic language, etc. And then you build custom compilers, special tools for tracing, entire architectures to deal with single threaded model, etc. Between Github & Shopify alone, they could have probably build a very Ruby on Rails like framework on a language more suited to the size and scale of these platforms.
This is not the future I want to live in. For all the talk about web3 and decentralization, this is the one thing I truly wish existed as a fully decentralized service. I would gladly pay.
