This strikes me as "end game" type behavior. These companies see the writing on the wall, and are willing to throw everything they have left to retain relevance in the coming post-AGI world. To me I'm more alarmed than I am shocked at the pay packages.
I'm a designer by profession but the majority of my actual schooling was in photography. Capturing a great visual moment feels second nature to me and the process feels so involuntary that you'd rarely even notice I've taken a photo. You can absolutely live in the moment and still have something to show for it.
Constructive feedback: every piece of design on this site screams I'm about to get scammed somehow.
If you're a fan of the holographic brain, you could postulate that perhaps the brain’s usual filtering mechanisms are being sufficiently degraded to allow for consciousness to tap into nonlocal holographic information. Or perhaps its a feature, returning you the "cosmic source" of all life and knowledge.
Yeah, what you said represents a 'net gain' over not having any of that at all.

Well at this point they've certainly proven a net gain for everyone regardless of the occasional nonsense they spew.

I think the biggest take away from Molyneux's work is regardless of how seriously he talked the games up, the games themselves never once took themselves too seriously. There was a level of playful whimsy that just didn't exist back then (and probably still doesn't today). You could tell he wanted to say more and do more, but was always limited by the technology available at the time. It felt like he was searching for something in the games he developed, and I was always happy to go searching with him.
Looks kinda fun. Basically Dungeon Keeper / Populous with better graphics.
Judging by the success of TikTok, yes, lots of consumers will love new video features.

Aviation is a big one. The SR71 was in the sky in 1964. The gap is probably even closer to 20 years for "consumer" Aviation tech.
I've always wondered if the US Government's AI research is as advanced as their general technological lead (usually 10-15 years ahead of consumer tech). If so, it would mean OpenAI has more to gain with such a partnership than the other way around. And maybe this sort of oversight is a kind of de facto requirement when approaching AGI.

Correct... which makes being a landlord exceptionally easy. All you have to do is have enough money. There is no cognitive or physical load that a landlord is required to carry, you simply open your checkbook.

I've been slowly getting drip fed bird flu updates through TikTok. Some on the ground people doing some pretty productive coverage. Reports of farms culling entire stocks, farms outright closing, lots of illness unreported. It's pretty wild.

On July 19th, 2021 I walked into a private emergency room and somehow convinced them to prescribe me something to treat my alcohol withdrawal (I was down to 2 hours of sobriety before withdrawal was setting in). It was a 15 day supply of Librium that I managed to stretch to about 30 days or so.
Anyways, I've been sober ever since and I'm still very thankful for that doctor's compassion which undoubtedly saved my life.

Lot of commentors missing the mark re: they need engineering leadership! A publicly traded company is a profit driven enterprise, maximizing profits is their first and last goal. Everything in-between that is called risk. Right now they'll be scrambling to hire the right PR teams and make those risks look less risky so the profit machine can go back to work.

This is the important part. Most people simply work themselves to death and never find the time to ask these kinds of questions. Or, they did ask themselves these questions at one point and realized working themselves to death was a more pleasant route than struggling with such existential problems.
It's weird that regardless of how many different ways you try to tell this to people they're still more than happy to give the benefit of the doubt to $307 billion dollar pharma company.
I'm specifically referring to long covid neurological symptoms like brain fog. Not hospitalization rates, mortality, or whatever measure of recovery most studies of severe patients would be concerned with.
