As someone in the industry it is amusing to watch HN do some cursory googling and then make definitive statements with confidence.

I would argue that testing code is “Risk Mitigation” not “Risk Management”.

It is nuanced, but at least in large Systems Engineering orgs, Risk Management is typically a different thing entirely.

It entails documenting known risks, evaluating the likelihood and potential impacts, defining mitigating actions, tracking the closure of those actions and the resultant reduction in the likelihood of the risk manifesting.

This is both centralized and distributed. The specific SMEs provide most of this input/definition, but it is also useful to have a centralized understanding of all the system risks by someone with a system level purview.

If he already knew how to code in other object oriented languages, and was really just learning C++ syntax over the weekend, it’s not as much of a stretch.

I live in an apartment complex without charging infrastructure. Don’t want to drive to nearby charging station and wait/coordinate rides to and from. My place of work doesn’t have enough charging infrastructure to support demand.

Not sure why, but I found this gave me a lot of anxiety.

I think maybe the focus and fine motor control needed to keep the ball within the lines…

When I was younger I routinely worked late nights (I’d work normal business hours, then go grab a subway and come back to the office and work until 10-12. I enjoy working alone at night, and I wasn’t using that free time productively, so I figured why not. It did help my career trajectory significantly.

As I’ve gotten older and have better uses for my time I find myself working a ~40hr week and checking out. Occasionally if I have a challenging problem that requires deep focus I’ll log on at night, but only because I like the satisfaction of “the grind” every now and then.

I agree. I am currently stuck in a rut where everything seems meaningless, and I can’t find the motivation to do much of anything.

I desperately yearn for a meaning/purpose to serve as a source of internal motivation…

Up until now, the only thing that has been a “motivation” for me is a fear of failure, so that’s what I rely on to get anything done.

I really don’t understand why we as a society have found it acceptable to experiment like this on other sentient beings for our own advancement.

Why are these animal lives worth less than ours? Just because we are more “advanced”?

Killing animals for food is at least in line with the natural order (leaving aside factory farming). Running experiments like this is far beyond natural, and to me is quite bizarre and unethical.

I feel that children have no obligation to take care of their elderly parents. They don’t owe them anything.

The alternative seems more insane to me.

True video capability would entail describing a scene as a prompt and getting a video in return. Not interpolating between a handful of images as is being done now (not to discredit those).

This will be a huge game changer when it occurs. Whether it be for deep fake videos, creating custom content, or making a new season of your favorite tv show that was cancelled too early. The possibilities are endless.

This is probably not in the near future (i.e. this year), but I doubt it is very far off.

My therapist mentioned the same thing to me recently so I suppose it is worth investigating further.

I had never considered it before that, probably due to lack of understanding of what ADD/ADHD is (when I was growing up the stereotype was high energy kids bouncing off the walls and unable to sit still and focus in class, whereas I was low energy, introverted, and had always done well in school and work so it was never a thought).

I have come to realize that I am very self centered, but I can’t quite figure out why.

I tend to get very caught up and focused on what is going on in my life and never stop to think about others. It is more that the thought never occurs to me, as opposed to me consciously prioritizing myself over others.

My wife on the other hand is very thoughtful, always checking in on others to see how they are doing. I wish I could be more like that, but would require some external override (eg setting a reminder on my phone) instead of me organically deciding to do so.

I have had to deal with at least one of those things. It still doesn’t change my opinion.

I feel that it is ethically wrong to enslave and torture animals for humanities benefit. If that means that I will die from a disease that would have been prevented otherwise, I can accept that. I don’t feel it is right for me to impose suffering on another sentient being for my own incremental benefit.

I guess I don’t understand why it is considered morally acceptable to torture countless animals for the benefit of humanity.

I understand it from a purely utilitarian standpoint, but it doesn’t sit well with me ethically.

I wouldn’t want an advanced alien species to enslave and torture me at their own benefit.

Or we halt the research until computational models become viable. You make it seem like we have no choice but to test on animals. I’m sure that is how the researchers rationalize it to themselves.

Interesting last thought. I have long wondered whether our brains are fully “deterministic”, but I assume that would be nearly impossible to verify for a device with such complex state and varied input.

That has literally nothing to do with it. What is the purpose of speculating here? It is because they needed a two seat aircraft for filming.
