Yeah honestly maybe I am feeling a bit jaded by a career in software development with jira and other bs. It doesnt feel like engineering to me :)

If youre doing anything that physically moves something like a stepper motor i have a lot of respect for that.

Changing a bunch of bits on a magnetic drive or another media is not like building an airplane that flies or a car that runs! Software engineering is closer to a priest that supposedly can communicate to god than it is to someone that builds a car!

I have a CS degree too and people without it are sometimes much better than me at slinging code

Actually forget people, you should realize how far this is from engineering when ChatGPT can do it better than me :) Ask ChatGPT to build a car though and we will see how far it gets.

What if all characters other than waldo were just dressing the same because they were trying to ape each other to get fictitious points on social forums. Internet has trained an entire generation to make arguments to get validation on social media that definitely reflects in the ideas that are put forward.

Exactly! I think the difference between me and some FAANG leetcoder just became hugely apparent

Before calculators were invented I imagine people thought that people who could multiply two big numbers were very smart!

I have worked for large and small companies in my career (not faang but similar size) but honestly all the great people I admire have been in smaller companies. Large companies seem to full of people that chase promotions, TC and are not interested in learning new things.

I would like to make the opposite argument. All these days I didnt share my thoughts because everyone else was and my voice would be drowned in a sea of voices. In post GPT4 era its easier to stand out if your thoughts are actually original and refreshing because most people sound like their thoughts have been written by GPT.

To rephrase it another way, the reign of the conformist ends here and the reign of the contrarian begins now.

And in that way its actually more overall correct than the most knowledgeable person on earth. With google you also get fed some very dangerously wrong info (recent example masks) but you think its correct. With ChatGPT you have to actually use your critical thinking skills and get to the truth which in my opinion a huge advancement over google.

Life is not fair! A lot of times bad things happen due to no fault of your own. That doesnt mean government should come bail you out. In fact I am bootstrapping a business and if you dont let this event kill all my competition I would call that really unfair.

Furthermore it is unlikely this will even affect anyone that is actually vulnerable like workers at Walmart for example.
