Is this really not a mostly “solved” problem using assistive browser (or OS-level) settings/extensions that apply high-contrast/large type consistently across all sites/apps? Is it necessary to performatively sacrifice aesthetics to signal to everyone else you’re especially sensitive to these needs?

At what point is it enough? If they use high contrast, large fonts, and translations for every language—including Swahili’s default Kiunjuga dialect, but fail to include the Kimvita, Kiamu, Kingwana, Chimiini, Bajuni, AND Comorian dialects, will they be accosted for saying “f off” to everyone speaking Swahili outside of Zanzibar?

This remains to be my go-to example for how YouTube can be a remarkably effective and valuable platform for the kind of enthusiast whose interests have exceeded the bounds of typical documentaries and media produced for the general public.

You’d die on the back of unreliable operation and relatively high maintenance. A DIY system built off of cheap ESP32s is never going to be reliable enough. The system as described above is the sort of thing I would happily operate for myself, but would never attempt to sell as a product. Anyone who’s tried to hold together a few dozen ESP32-powered IoT devices will likely attest—they’re very impressive for their cost, but hardly reliable on the scale of years.

I’m not sure I understand these references. The banks were too big to fail specifically because they were banks involved with the finances of every major industry and government, not simply because their (arguably specious) valuations, or even market caps, had a ton of zeroes on them. What’s the argument for OpenAI being so inherently critical and interweaved with the rest of the economy that it can’t be allowed to fail? What’s the argument for how such a bailout would result in greater economic outcomes? The banks that got bailed out continued lending and immediately resumed profitable business, how will the AI companies offer value towards such a proposition?

Its likelihood is moot. It’s happening every day at this point.

I don’t consider myself a coder or programmer, but learning git was like an organizational superpower for my particular brain wiring. I use it for websites, design projects, electronics engineering, music composition, personal knowledge bases, remote administration scripts, config management, snippets, so many applications and so many features for one system. It’s not always perfect, but I tell everyone I work with they should learn it.

I’ve just started taking surface roads out of Charlotte at peak hours because I know how to get around, and any route that’s part of Apple/Google maps defaults will invariably be clogged with everyone following their directions. Surface streets tend to be blissfully open these days.

I find a lot of HN discussions quickly turn into thought experiments and philosophical debates that largely forget the original topic. For the most part, I find this idiosyncrasy charming and entertaining, but it does frequently result in forests being missed for the trees.

Forgejo is pretty close. Its runners are largely compatible with GH’s, and its issues, labels, tags, releases, wikis, packages, branch protection, secrets/envs, signing keys, repo permissions, etc. are all largely identical. I maintain a lot of mirrors and while none of my repos are particularly complex, I haven’t ever lost anything in a migration from GitHub to Forgejo.

A question that roughly 500,000 people in America find themselves asking. So far, the answer seems to be “in a pup tent in the woods behind Walmart”, because there’s not a ton of great options otherwise.
