So long WordPress 2 years ago

The whole community and ecosystem is full of shady dishonest businesses and practices it seems. Besides all the recent drama as an end user and plugin buyer I have had to ask for 2 separate refunds from major plugins for shady dark pattern re-bills or secret upsells. I used to not consider myself a mark but maybe I am 42 now so I am starting to miss the real opt out buttons (4 pages deep below the fold). Anyways I don't like being in any ecosystem that is full of this stuff and not worth my time to manage all of it.

If you are a 19 year old Canadian who is priced out of everything and is in a line at the local movie theater 100 long with desperate foreign students trying to get your first job you're going to feel cheated and pissed off.

If you are a 37 yo millennial who still doesn't own a house, can't afford to have kids moving back into the shitty style of apartment you lived in your early 20's but now it costs $2700 a month, you are going to be fucking pissed off.

If you are a new parent waiting 9 hours overnight in an packed emergency room, you are going to feel pissed off.

It is hard to tell Canadians this is good for them when everything has gotten worse.

We just use a headless chrome with a sort of wrapper script to do this at my work with a bunch of settings close to the actual size of paper. It allows me to test all of our reports in media->print in dev tools then print->pdf with chrome and only have to design to that spec. Then in our reports we provide a "save as pdf" button instead of encouraging print in all the other possible browsers which would make the task insane and cause me to possibly quit.

Thank you! This makes me feel good. He is going for the stem cell viability test in January, at Vancouver General after some chemo so fingers crossed. He heard a story of a friend of a friend who has lived so far 7 years so it gave him hope, initial diagnoses was very scary.

I read this article yesterday, helped me a bit. My 62yo father was recently diagnosed with multiple myeloma when a vertebrate in his back basically disintegrated. Spent his whole life as a fine finishing carpenter. When he was in his 20s he just wore flimsy paper masks, and I don't know if ever wore gloves when using stains and lacquers.

We always joked he was going to get something from the chemicals, not so funny now that it hit.

I mean good luck but the YIMBY movement is a very pro investor movement.

Decrepit old SFH selling for $1.6 million turned into a 4 plex here in Vancouver would see each unit in the 4 plex selling for $1.4+ million (maybe $1.1 for the basement suite). Friend bought in a converted old place 780 sqft attic suite $940k. It doesn't really make stuff affordable.

It was sold here as "the missing middle" and they basically dragged a mouse over huge washes of neighbourhoods like SimCity and said you could do 5 unit conversions. Fixer-upper SFH become gut out conversion SFH and are priced based on the investment of the 5plex conversion and what those can be sold for.

Movie company marketing for blockbusters 100% revolves around controlling a fandom that will review bomb things while a lot of the general public won't even participate in a RT audience score or IMDB rating.

It is full loopholes like people with 10 year visas, work visas, student visas are exempt. We have University students with $31million Vancouver mansions in their name. Our tax system is screwy where we have very low property taxes and high employment tax. The whole west side of Vancouver claims poverty level incomes on average (like qualifies for government tax rebates bad), yet it is the most expensive land in the country.

Astronaut families are a problem and I feel leach on the society. Paying very low taxes, using all the social services, yet making income outside of the country so not paying anything.

It is actually so much work and costs a lot to produce an online course. After you have a lot of content is it not better try and sell the content you have, and then offload the creation workload udemy style, especially with coding courses since there are so many remote work people in this space.

From my understanding (I could be wrong) and why I have to follow all these rules here in Canada, is the USA made a homeland security law in like 2007 that said law enforcement can have access to any foreign individuals data without a warrant/good reason.

So now when picking services I am not allowed to host on any non Canadian servers if we are hosting personal information about staff/users etc. It can be a simple event registration system, survey, or just having to be really careful when using cloud services. I even have to watch out when sharing a innocuous file over Slack.

This really sucked when stuff was moving over to cloud and we wanted to use a lot of hot new stuff, but most providers get it now and provide Canadian servers so not as bad finding compliant vendors.

Commiting a felony seems to be a life sentence in the United States even after you have served your time. The algorithm can easily just disqualify them with no nuance.

The description on this was even funny "When you rent a place for 1 or 2 years". Just wait till it caretakes rent collecting, rent raising, and eviction services.

Making being a landlord easier and more disconnected from people and your tenants etc for the investor class. What a great product for society and wealth inequality. Love it!!! Put an algorithm on judging if someone deserves shelter, we have never seen any problems with this in past studies!! Maybe one of the most evil things I seen on here in awhile tbh.

I loved spotify for music suggestions and playlists, but are finding it highly annoying lately for the podcasts it keeps trying to push at me taking up prime real-estate in the app. Like for example if I open it now the second row is a whole list of podcast about "Get Educated about Voter Suppression". All that stuff sucks for you guys but I am Canadian and don't want to listen to 5 podcasts about American voting.

I only listen to podcasts on my iphone and already have a nice feed in the podcast app, I am good. I haven't even listened to more then 3 hours of podcasts in the last year since I am not on transit every day with covid/work from home.

Squarespace S1 5 years ago

I used to do like $5000 wordpress websites on a side hustle just throwing up edited pre-bought templates and would always feel really dirty during it "thank god they don't know about squarespace".

AirPods Max 6 years ago

I mean true. These will be the biggest selling $500 headphones just because they are from Apple and people who never thought of buying $500 headphones are the people who are going to buy these, not people who are high quality audio hobbyists. They will try and get them on the heads of athletes getting off the plane just like Beats etc...

AirPods Max 6 years ago

I mean I will have to wait to see them in person but tbh they look pretty ugly, like a no-name luxury headphone you would see at bestbuy for $70 marketed to a female market.

The price point is ridiculous but the Bose go for like $350? so I can see it I guess. Will have to wait till reviews. For me on quality to buy they would have to compete the entry level prosumer stuff HD-650 etc. But they are closed back, active noise canceling so it is a completely other market that I don't even have headphones in.

For walking on the street or in a plane I am into chi-fi IEMs that are like $35 and compete with $500 stuff and just block out the sound through isolation.

Vancouver where I live had fairly cheap rent compared to ownership for awhile, maybe back in 2010's. Mortgage + maintenance fee back then for a condo could be like $2800/month but would rent for as low as ~$1000-$1500. It is still like this but the spread is a bit less because of cheap money, and weaker condo prices cause of covid. You can get 1.79% 5 year fixed on a 25 year amortized mortgage rn. Our housing market bubble is humming through covid.

We have very low to no property taxes. All of our taxes are based on income. So a condo could have annual property taxes of like $1800-$2000... So what is the point of renting it out if it is increasing in value 10% a year and you are going to use it maybe 2 months a year. The west side of Vancouver were all the mansions are, and had a the greatest new concentration of rich foreign buyers actually paid the lowest taxes in the province.

We also have very big immigration influx in Canada, foreign student population and a 10 year visa program with China. These all started shooting up rents. But also caused what is known as satellite families which drop of their kids and caretaker, use the public schools, health care etc but make all their money back in their country of origin not claiming income tax here. We had University students with their names on $30million houses. House wife seemed to be the most lucrative job going in real estate.

We got a new provincial government a few years ago who brought in the "speculation tax". Basically if you don't pay income tax here but own a house you have to pay a tax of 2% of the properties value. This is compounded on top of an empty homes tax the city put in place of 1% if it is not rented out. There was also some new laws/procedures put in place with data sharing across province/city/real estate board that is helping clearing up some malfeasance as well.

I mean there are local laws, but there is also the part of Thai islands where they are run by little local mobs. So probably pretty easy to get your friend in the local police to arrest a tourist that is hurting the local businesses. The guy was probably more out of hand then he is letting on.

I stayed a beach hostel once in Tonsai where these plain clothes thai's rolled up in a boat (two saying they were local krabi police) and demanded payment for "music licensing" from Thai owners. The owner refused to do the payoff, and the gangsters tried to physically escort him to the boat for "arrest"... the bartender got me to take a photo of them. They demanded I delete the photo and I was like "no you aren't going to mess with tourists" and they let the owner stay. Thai RIAA is brutal!!
