Oh, that's a very specific crack. This is an extrusion error. The extrusion temperature is dropping too low while it's still over the internal die. The thicker peaks cool more slowly than the thinner flats, remaining at a weaker temperature longer, and they're pulled apart by accumulating contraction.

These cracks usually aren't obvious until they meet a conflicting load. For example, tapping threads up the end without supporting the work correctly. It's not like this is a load bearing part, they could get around this issue with a little care. Holding the work in a hex collet during tapping is cheap, adds efficiency, and would solve the problem. Sending feedback to the extruder is free and usually effective. Or maybe the product is moving well enough on brand equity that it's not worth bothering.

Reading summaries like this requires great skepticism. It's exceptionally difficult in this particular case to avoid directing results to arbitrary conclusions through cohort selection and grouping.

Is this more likely to tell us something about the people and roles selected to work remotely, or an outcome of working remotely? At this scale the influences of each are absolutely inseparable. Do cohorts robustly account for education, experience, skillsets, tenure, etc.? The same values which improve one's ability to start a business strongly overlap with the considerations for employing someone remotely. I'm not saying they're comparing a "remote" cohort including developers to a "not remote" cohort including construction workers, but it's important to confirm.

I've pedaled around on a couple variations of this design. Like everyone who had never ridden one but saw it on the internet, I also confidently imagined it would violently hurl me to the ground at the slightest provocation. The best (granted, of two...) version I've tried was semi-recumbent, with a standard geartrain and flevobike-style steering. The steering was a little weird at first, but I quickly figured out how to fully steer it hands free. Fully unloaded it was possible to tip it with hard front braking while turning, if you pitched your body weight into the effort. Loaded, it was absolutely nailed to the ground. You're just a mule winching a load down the road at that point. Sometimes it's fun to be a mule, piloting a weird bike-cart.

It turns out everyone flamewarring about stability on the internet forgot to get mad about drive wheel traction limits when pulling a load uphill. Which for me was a loading consideration rather than a problem. The underseat steering was brilliant for reasons I'd never thought about. But don't take my word for it, ride one and decide for yourself.

The same reasons convenience stores sell single cigarettes, and people smoke them in their cars. Compelling cravings don't care about your externalities and don't want to wait. Lots of people don't want the people they live with to know how much they actually consume. Some people live with others who don't allow beer in the fridge for various reasons. Some have a housemate who can't be trusted around a surplus. Lots of people like to think of themselves as the kind of person who doesn't need to have a whole pack around, they just want this one and maybe another one. Depending on who you're hanging out with, sometimes it's nice to go to a BYO party and not contribute a surplus if that would get abused. And as always, who said they waited to get started until they were driving home anyway?

They caught on, but with more appropriate stainless alloys. Columbus has XCr, Reynolds has 931. Either can be brazed, or silver soldered into lugs, or TIG welded. Cinelli does mass production of the bike you're describing, minus the lugs.

304 can't be optimized to a point it'll compete with the vast range of other stainless steels that already exist. Something else will always be more corrosion resistant, or stronger, or tougher. 304 exists on price. It's quick, common, and cheap. This process makes 304 expensive, uncommon, and slower to produce. The proven concept is what's carrying value here.

This isn't about Amazon's retail inventory. This is inventory owned by vendors, held in Amazon's care. Think about how this would play out in a consignment shop.

In the case of a no fault accident like a fire, paying back a different amount might be negotiable. A customer causing loss of a product on consignment might or might not have a pursuable compensation path. In this case it's a bad test thing.

The car impacted at a barrier splice which was not correctly joined. Barrier splices can come apart in the real world, but the fasteners will tear apart the sheet metal in the process. That splice gently deflected apart, like two sections of barrier were gently leaned against each other.

A thermal fuse isn't for overpressure control, it's intended to trip before a physical overpressure control vents superheated steam. Both provide failover redundancy independent of operational heater controls.

There isn't enough detail of the boiler to tell if there's an overpressure relief valve. The boiler can't be made safe without one. If they're cheap enough to be standard in cheap knockoff moka pots one should be here...

This machine's wiring diagram shows an unlabelled shape wired in series with what might possibly be the heating element and a shape with "ssr" in its label. Which places the first unlabelled shape in the right place to be a thermal fuse or switch. If they're cheap enough to be standard in Mr Coffee machines one should be here...

Safety discussion in this project is conspicuously absent. Knowledgable users shouldn't be making assumptions like this about safety features. Assumptions and safety aren't compatible. Average users should be informed in detail about the safety features they're tasked with assembling.

McMaster also sells discs of tool steel and glass bearing balls... and carbide, and ceramic, etc. What if the bearing ball was carbide, even harder? What would happen if you reduced the hardness of a steel ball, which usually only requires normal kitchen oven temperatures? What happens if the materials switch places, say a hardened tool steel disc and glass ball?

Anyway, lots of options to safely experiment with material science concepts in very accessible and tweakable ways! No beryllium or foundry equipment required. I do think the massive, well fitted, rigid surface backing up the disc is important to constrain what this is demonstrating - plastic vs elastic deformation.

Taking this approach to a certain extreme, there's this video about making a bellhousing adapter to mate a Smart ForTwo EV motor to a vintage Jeep transmission. Raw materials include snowmobile clutch parts, scrap engine parts, and the housing from a dead old Skil saw. After all, once machine tools get involved, everything looks like a billet for something else, and casting is a far more accessible means of metalworking.

Much of the channel is about dragging decrepit artifacts of industry out of scrapyards or the reclaiming jaws of Nature and quite effectively repurposing or reusing the sound bits, which is something I personally find to be creative and satisfying.

It's a standard entry in the OTR long haul market segment, Volvo's equivalent of the Freightliner Cascadia and International Lonestar, all with their own take on the same set of features. Efficiency trim like aero and tires are standard, but marketing hypes it anyway and brags about how their new engine technology is superior when they do something as banal as switching to a different injector supplier.

The USA market supports a substantial truck hauling segment to fill the rail deficit. All they do is drive a thousand miles from warehouse A to warehouse B over and over, so aero between cab and trailer that restricts tight maneuvers doesn't matter, LRR tires start to make sense since they never spend significant time on lower speed surface streets, etc. It's not like the USA is going to update (much less upgrade) rail and that truck market is fully saturated and primarily cost sensitive, so actual disruption only adds risk.

It's a design error from the start. The workaround shouldn't have happened, but is only one of countless ways this would have inevitably happened anyway. Glue has a lot of failure modes. Correct application can't be reliably tested non-destructively. Product variances are often very hard to detect. Degradation with age and physical use can't be reliably forecast.

Three pins on the back of that appearance plate that push into starlock style fasteners in the pedal are cheaper than the appropriate glue, faster to install than glue, more reliable, trivially verified, impossible to misalign, and that's why it's a common solution that auto manufacturers use in this exact application. This was a confoundingly stupid place to rely on glue.

A more powerful laser is only half of the equation for cutting metal effectively.

The laser only melts the metal, it doesn't move it out of the cut, and some metals can react in plain air to sputter back at the emitter optics. Gas is forced under pressure at the cut to clear it. With some metals and/or thinner (speaking from a commercial perspective) stock, you can get away with plain air at high volumes of normal air compressor pressures with good results if it's very clean and dry. Others require specifically reactive or nonreactive gases or blends of gases. That's true for most hot cutting processes though. Plasma usually consumes plain air to blow out the cut, oxy-fuel uses excess oxygen to reactively blow out the cut. Lasers with their extremely narrow kerf are more finicky, which can mean a surprisingly high consumables cost.

More powerful lasers also require the optical hardware to operate in a light vacuum. Plasma generated by dust and air itself will ablate expensive parts. Home shops shouldn't need that much power though. If you're cutting thick or difficult metals regularly, that's not a hobby any more.

Then there's the byproducts. Organics get blasted into all kinds of random organic-ish things that aren't great to ingest or emit at ground level near neighbors (PSA, this is true for current hobby lasers). Cutting metals can get really exciting if you don't clean often and thoroughly enough to prevent a critical mass of finely powdered byproducts. An iron or aluminum fire will wreck your laser. An iron and aluminum fire will wreck your laser, and whatever it's sitting on, and the concrete below that.

For things to get this far is a failure of accounting. Engineering may have set the stage, but it's accounting's job to respond appropriately rather than letting (or not seeing) this play out. Treating accounting unseriously is an extremely obvious, avoidable mistake that a mindboggling number of businesses make. A substantial portion of the finance and accounting industry thrives on cleaning up the outcome of accounting being pawned off on the owner's spouse / kid / niece / nephew. They'll figure it out, right? It's just math.

I was thinking, surely it can't be that stupid in this case, but then I checked. Who knows, maybe Geeta Gupta-Fisker really is a profoundly skilled financial wizard. The founder's / chairman's / CEO's spouse is always the wrong person to be managing finances for so very many reasons. At the very least the optics of undermining of a firewall between accounting and equity undermines trust in finance. Such a relationship inspires extra special attention from auditors and regulators when mistakes happen. It's a clear sign that leadership doesn't take accounting as seriously as they should. Yet nepotism keeps being a normal thing that happens often.

Many jurisdictions in the US have safety regulations specifically around steering. In some jurisdictions it's illegal to drive a car on public roads with steering that has no mechanical connection to the steering wheel. Some areas have a minimum steering wheel diameter that's larger than the cybertruck steering wheel's minor diameter. Some areas have laws requiring a minimum (multiple...) number of turns lock-to-lock. Many areas require your steering to be operable in the event of power loss (I'd bet that everyone on or near a road would like that too). DMV's and police agencies sometimes regulate what they independently perceive as safety problems regardless of law, if someone with the means to declare internal policy gets the urge.

And that's for all cars operating on public roads, not just registered, in an area. It might be legal to drive a cybertruck where one lives, but not in a neighboring city or state. Moving fast and ignoring regulations on Tesla's part only works for their customers until regulatory agencies encounter a reason to pay attention.

25 years ago, I was spending just over 1/3 of my take home pay on rent. That used to be a normal thing that people could do, only 25 years ago.

The exact same apartment is listed today for over four times what I was paying then. The same job I had then now pays 25% more. Rent for the same apartment is more than that job's entire gross pay.

I'm less focused on downsizing, and more on avoiding unnecessary churn driven by (popularly assumed) design or (Hanlon's Razor and my assumption) incompetence.

I managed to keep an android smartphone going for almost 10 years. At less than two years the Google Play Store would devour the entire battery in 9 hours, so I deleted it, and battery life rebounded to 5-6 days with normal use. Better than new.

Other android system apps began to unobservably consume obvious quantites of data with telemetry, so I installed netguard to identify them. Once those apps were identified I deleted everything I could without breaking the phone, and battery life rebounded to 4 days after six years of use.

The local police recently acquired a secondhand stingray and circle varying parts of the county with it cranked up to maximum acquisition and retention, for reasons perhaps related to unfamiliarity with the concepts of discretion and nuance and subtlety. Newer phones don't care, they switch to bands that old stingray has never heard of. My old phone couldn't, and calls simply wouldn't connect in or out when a certain Cessna was overhead (verified tens of times on ADSB). Clumsy dragnet surveillance on top of reduced service in legacy 4G bands broke my old phone. It outlived the world it depended on.

So I repaired a secondhand, rather less old, broken android phone, and now I'm trying out LineageOS. We'll see how far this one goes. It seems like a lot of effort and specialized knowledge to keep a smartphone usefully functioning longer than a goldfish. It's frustrating. I'm not downsizing, I'm avoiding the accumulation of things I have to figure out how to hack for maintenance instead of for fun.

Mentioned in the video, but worth repeating. This one like many old appliances is ungrounded. What's wrong in this video is the suggestion to rely on neutral for ground. Neutral is not ground and shouldn't be relied on for electrical exposure safety. Not mentioned is the condition of the interior steel's plating. The galvanizing (at least zinc) and chrome are separating from the base metal in areas through oxidization and abrasion.

The design risks have value and are worth preserving, but "this device predates safety" is a real factor to bear in mind.

If the drive source is attached directly to the uniwheel, then handling radial drive inputs isn't required and the uniwheel isn't necessary. It's effectively a hub motor with reduction gears at that point. Once the motor is mounted remotely from the uniwheel and the uniwheel is handling radial offsets, then we need to prevent the axle from getting pushed around radially. Rotating shafts that deflect introduce off-balance vibration and destructive mechanical loads. If the motor is located very near the uniwheel, keeping the shaft's free length very short, the motor's output bearing does effectively provide that support. Then we're only constrained by relocating the suspension elements.

Thrust bearings are for the gears. The depictions show helical gears, which would surely be necessary when operating at transportation speeds for noise reasons. Helical gears experience axial forces, which would need to be handled for each gear. Mainly on one side for ICE drivetrains, since coasting loads are small, so one side could get away with a ground and hardened rub surface. EV's using regenerative braking would need robust thrust handling on both sides.

Herringbone gears would eliminate the axial thrust issue, at substantially more expense. The easiest method is to separate the gear areas with a central runout groove so you'd have a hope of grinding in a decent surface on the faces, then it's only a little more than double the work; effectively cutting two gear shapes per gear plus the runout.

Worth noting, placement at the wheel is somewhat arbitrary. There's nothing to prevent this contraption from working the other way around and being mounted at the chassis instead, aside from squeezing out every bit of space optimization. Axle support would be a concern either way. Controlling deflection of the drive axle adds a structural requirement, certainly a well supported bearing close to this device.

The gears will be turning at a large multiple of wheel speed, so will require roller bearings except for low power and speed use: a radial and thrust bearing for each end of each gear, or 22 of each per wheel. Increasing torque also increases the level of thrust support required for the moving gear carriers handling all of those helical gears.

It's a neat idea for highly space constrained applications that have to package a drivetrain very close to a wheel, which does end up being a rather niche use case. Mars rovers, perhaps. Trying to compete against CV joints in passenger vehicles with this would be quite difficult.

Take it from someone who grew up among gun-happy USA-ians and stupidly fooled around with guns in their youth: Don't shoot tires. Not even an old economy tire left from the target car someone dumped in the abandoned gravel pit. All rounds that don't embed will hit something downrange, for somewhat arbitrary values of "downrange" expressed in terms of angle and retained energy. A core principle of firearm safety is that you only get to pick a round's first target, the round picks the rest. And that's why airports and space centers are generally considered by experts to serve poorly as firing ranges.
