The HuggingFace report mentions decoy activities, does this mean it tried to cover its tracks or obfuscate what it did?

I'm curious why you think China will decline or be eliminated, I always thought that China was a reliable as a production/trading partner and that they planned for decades ahead with programs like Belt and Road Initiative unlike western politics that only looks as far as the next election. Very open to correction on this though, thinking about it not sure what formed my opinion on this.

Maybe we do care about truth, freedom and privacy but the majority of rest of society will happily accept any T&Cs just to get access to whatever the next digital sliced pan is and as for truth and accountability, if they were two sides of the same coin on the ground people wouldn't bend down to pick it up as possesing it looks too much like responsibility and inconvenience.

My great hope for AI is that it kills social media by making 99% of content and comments untrustworthy and not worth consuming.

No. 2 is interesting, our national lottery in Ireland has an app that you can scan the barcode on your ticket to check if you have won or not, at some stage they updated the app and the scan picks up the barcode even before you center it on the screen and tells you if you have lost/won instantly, I though it was my IT background that made me uncomfortable with it happening so fast, wonder what other examples like this exist where the result/action being too fast causes doubt with the user?

Thanks for posting that, there are a lot of quotes that resonated with me. I've had a personally and professionally tough year and will be losing my job in the new year, 50/50 my own fault for disengaging after a reorg at that start if the year. I'm not overly worried and will be taking the payoff to throw my hat in the small startup ring but this quote still struck a chord and made me feel more positive:

I can see a valid use for a version of chat control where the communications of all elected officials are retained forever and audited on a regular basis for doing anything illegal, proposing anything illegal, actions not in the public interest, cronyism etc. All data should be released when they die, 10 years after they leave office or upon conviction of a crime related to political appointment.

I think most people don't want to interact with computers and people will use anything that reduces the amount of time spent and will be be embraced en-mass regardless of security or privacy issues.

I completed my degree over 20 years ago and due to dot com bust and the path I took never coded as a full time role, some smallbits of dev and scripting but nothing where I would call myself a developer. I've had loads of ideas down through the years but never had the time work to complete them or learn the language/stack to complete them. Over the last 3 weeks I've been working on something small that should be ready for a beta release by the end of August. The ability to sit down and work on a feature or bug when I only have a spare 30 mins and be immediately productive without having to get in the zone is a game changer for me. Also while I can read and understand the code writing it would be at least 10 times slower for me. This is a small codebase that will have less than 5k lines and is not complicated so github copilot is working well for me in this case.

I could see me paying for higher tiers given the productivity gains.

The only issue I can see is that we might end up with a society where those that can afford the best subscriptions have more free time, get more done, make more money and are more successful in general. Even current base level subscriptions are too expensive for huge percentage of the global population.

It depends on what you're doing but the biggest help to me was the dictate button in outlook to draft email then just edit, probably a lot more use now with copilot etc. Your friend needs to be prepared for a significant drop in productivity at the computer and at home. Even simple things like making a sandwich or getting dressed will be difficult and slow, especially at the start.

Sitting have a lazy late breakfast, sun is shining and this comes up, great start to the day. Showed my wife and she had the great idea that we should watch Fr. Ted from the start again. Fr. Ted first came out when I was in college in the 90s, Thursday night was the big night out for students and as new episodes of Fr Ted would air at 9pm our night out would start in a jammed pub with everyone watching it on a big screen. On a side note, not sure if this would be a sacrilegious or an ecumenical matter but having voice options for Ted, Dougal, Fr Jack, Mrs Doyle, Bishop Brennan, Fr Noel Furlong, Fr Stone, Fr Fintan Stack, Tom, Henry Sellers. That's just off the top of my head, there are many more.It was such magnificent writing and acting that characters that only appeared in one episode would still be mentioned as a joke or reference among my generation. I remember when we were preparing to have our first kid 10 years ago we bought a monitor with the pad underthe mattress on the advice of other parents. As a former cpr instructor I was dumbfounded when I realised that parents would spend 100s on monitors but not one person had bothered to learn infant cpr.

I wish them the best, it was a great resource when I first started working when my options were trawling through the folder of msdn CDs and later a paid subscription to expertsexchange.com. Joel and Jeff were also the first blogs I would check weekly for updates. Whatever way it ended up it was a great resource for a long time and helped a lot of us.

The administration has screwed the pooch here, all trust built between the EU and US since WWII is effectively gone forever. The trust that allowed the EU to assume that the US was largely aligned with European standards and goals and that the US could be trusted as a long term partner for trade, supply our weapons systems, fly our satellites into space, provide our network hardware, our business operating systems, store our documents in the cloud, give us satellite broadband, the dollar as a reserve currency, store our gold, provide our social media platforms, share intel etc. etc. is gone forever. The EU now has no choice but to look internally first for anything that is that even has a whiff of strategic importance. Even if the current administration rolled back everything today the damage is done and the EU has no choice in how they proceed in the long term and has to manage and mitigate the long term risk of being dependent for so much externally.

A study of people who were adopted as babies could be interesting, depending on circumstances the stress on the birth mother could be reflected in the child but the dynamics of the birth family after birth would no longer be in play. I am specifically thinking of Ireland where there are a significant number of people in their 40s up that were the result of pretty much forced adoption due to the societal stigma of getting pregnant out of wedlock which would have been very stressful as the mothers were sent to mother and baby homes once they began to show.
