It seems like we were on a line of steady progression in features and usability through the 80s and 90s, then basically peaked for a lot of software by the 2000s. Once every feature most needed was in, and you spent the last 4 versions making things more user-friendly, what was left? But companies needed people to upgrade to keep their business model going.

Coming in for a landing on a flight recently, I was amazed at the contrast I saw between a housing development of 50+ homes and a golf course across the road that took up the same amount of space.

That top reply made me laugh out loud:

or (to put it in an IT context) backup and DR services/hardware.

I daily drove it in the 2000s, and loved it. Later I used it for my server VMs due to the small memory footprint and fast remote response. If it supported current applications, I’d still be using it

Not to mention logistics. It’s easy to support one of something. Supporting spares, upgrades, obsolescences, etc (plus documentation and training) for hundreds of drones across the globe is another story.

while not root cause, wouldn’t a module having corrupted memory still be an issue with either the OS (for not protecting it) or the module (for not sanitizing input)?

seems ironically like a similar problem of content owners trying to filter bot scrapers from legit users

I just did this a month or so ago to take care of the growth around a creek. It was a fantastic experience and I will definitely be doing it again. The whole neighborhood loved them. My kids gave them all names and would go out to pet them periodically. And everything green that was within their reach (even standing on two legs!) was gone.

The computing power available today is such a double-edged sword. We can do so much more so much faster, but then we (including myself in this) waste so many cycles on abstractions and frameworks and layers of libraries to make our development jobs easier.

One of the things I love about HN is having stories like this in the comments from otherwise random unassuming usernames

will there be a point where code generators start putting ads into their produced results, like “this pdf was made with the free version of pdfsoftware” watermarks unless you pay extra?

maybe they ask a secondary agentic system to fix it. will that be the future of “redundancy”?

I’m all for fun side projects, so don’t take this the wrong way. Does this have a practical use case? Like are people actually wanting to make their PDFs less legible? Usually I’m trying to do the opposite, clean up my scanned-in documents.

For me: everything! I clicked so well with it, everything made sense and was responsive.
