sending key combos like ^d sounds terrible on a phone keyboard.

Terminal apps like termux supplement the phone keyboard with a pane atop it with tab,ctrl,pipe buttons. Should be usable.

Vim and others are available as packages in gnuroot, etc. A shell and editor split with tmux should work.

Still very uncomfortable programming on a phone ofcourse.

One can however quickly switch between a browser and terminal/chroot app though. So googling can be done.

Be sure to use tmux. The tmux package in termux allows you to resize panes and switch windows by tapping instead of using the usual key combinations.

Forgive my ignorance, but what caused XMPP to fail? Simply the lack of uptake or is there some other reason?

The uptake of those technologies never depended on pornography. VCRs had movies, internet video streaming had services such as YouTube, VR will have gaming. Pornography just happens to be yet another use case, not exactly one that these technologies would otherwise have had lesser uptake because of.

I too don't see Scratch as the future of programming but you have to grant that it gets kids interested in programming.

So it's not limited to Indian students as stated in the recruiters section?
