I've been on a software development hiatus for about 8 months now and it's been pretty restful. Not ready to get back to it just yet though.

I was having issues resting and resetting day-to-day and that burnt me out and I found what I'm doing now (whatever I want) to be the solution.

I work at a Smart Grid company and we make devices and software that help conserve energy and natural resources. I'm glad to have found the job because my previous job didn't have what I perceived to be a benefit to society and that really bothered me.

My home office setup (where I try to spend most of my working time):

Desk: StandDesk adjustable standing desk with bamboo top

Chair: Standard leather office chair from BigBox store

Monitor: Dual 1080p 5 year old Acers. This is next on my upgrade list

Keyboard: CODE Keyboard with Cherry MX Clear switches

Hours: 9/10am -> Until ~8+ Hours worked

Bonus: Box full of baby chickens and heat lamp. They moved in a few weeks back and I'm waiting for them to grow big enough to be moved outside. Them being around has prompted me to go into my work-office and/or work from another room these past 2 weeks. They're cute but it'll be good when they move out! The cheeping isn't so bad but the heat lamp and the temperatures they require do not align with my preferences.

Thank you for the reply! I was under the impression that your home was occasionally mobile as well so that's why the fixed land line solution wasn't immediately obvious.

He mentions that his home server and internet gateway is a Sheevaplug with a wireless dongle and dialup modem. Presumably he doesn't have a landline where he lives. Can anyone comment on getting dialup access via a cell phone connection? Is that one way his setup could work?

There seems to be a big resistance to a pharmacological solution to mental health problems on HN. That's how I "hacked" my anxiety. I tried various dietary changes, various physical activity routines, meditation, etc but in the end found the best solution was a visit to a professional and get a prescription.

I used to be more resistant to medicating mental health problems in that way until it worked for me. I went from an almost nonfunctional wreck to a thriving, functional person again. YMMV.

Ask them about their vacation policy, and specifically ask your interviewer when was the last time they took a vacation 1 week or longer.

Ask if they're remote friendly.

Ask what their sick policy is.

Ask what their company does to make the world a better place. It's fine if they don't have an answer, some entities exist just to make money without any other "mission", it's just good to know.

I used to drink loads of coffee but then I started having periods of anxiety. I cut out all caffeine for a while and switched to black tea. It works for me and I enjoy it. I tried coffee a few times since but it gives me too much of a caffeine boost too quickly and makes me feel jittery.

Tea for me!

I'd first seek the advice of wealthy industrialists like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and Bill Gates. Gates especially would be helpful in having effective ways to spend money for the benefit of humanity.

Then (depending on the advice given by others) I'd probably fund NASA, SpaceX, various clean energy companies, disease eradication programs, and development projects for poor countries.
