I've seen this manifest itself in various forms. In some ways, it's like the classic pump and dump scam that used to plague the Internet stock forums back in the late 90's. Tokyo Joe, I think his name was, became infamous for using his track record to front run his mostly illiquid OTC stocks. Because people thought he was this great trader, they would plow into his announced picks, creating a surge of volume in these thinly traded stocks, in which Tokyo Joe would sell out and cause a frantic collapse.

Nowadays, though, you see this sort of behavior in legal and more respectable ways. However, I think the purported results are highly disingenuous. What do I mean? Let's use a well known investment advisory service known as AAII.

AAII has a model shadow stock portfolio with fairly well known and transparent stock selection criteria. However, they often announce stock picks and stock sells to their followers within a day, supposedly, of their actual transaction. I've been studying the behavior of their stock pick/sells announcements, and on average, stocks are trading +5% to -5% (depending on whether it was a buy or sell) within the day following the announcement. This is HUGE for many reasons:

1) They often have multiple transactions on the portfolio in any given year.

2) The performance on the portfolio is boosted by, on average, 5% for any buy or sell. Compounded, this makes a big statistically significant difference on their purported shadow stock portfolio's CAGR and strategy.

3) They do not disclaim this behavior as a caveat emptor.

4) Though their strategy is transparent, their data feed / source is not. No one will be able to replicate their stock picks/sells on their own with their own live data source.

Wow, Epiphany. Haven't heard that name in a long time. I used to work at IBM above their office in Campus Dr. in San Mateo. I think they went out of business and that space was later occupied by a staffing agency. I might have run into her before in the lobby. Such a long time ago. Man, time flies.

Not true. My sister won a LARGE (over half a million dollars) sexual harassment lawsuit against her employer. In fact, it wasn't an ongoing thing but one incident and the way HR handled this incident. After she left the company, she went back to school and got a job afterwards at a large hospital. She hasn't ever had problems finding employment even though her name is easily Googeable and shows that she won a large settlement against her previous employer.

Reading things like this kinda depresses me. I guess I just don't understand what makes things popular on the web. I mean, I would have never thought things like Twitter, Instagram, all of the various messaging apps would ever get this much traction. I think it's bizarre.

Has anyone here personally lived, worked, and saw the dot com boom and bust in Silicon Valley? More so, do you happen to currently live and work here still?

I have, and although I don't think the current tech boom is as bubbly as the late 90's, I do see a lot of similarities in the area. Traffic, though, is no where near as bad as it was back then. But, it's getting there. However, construction is at an all time boom. I have never seen more cranes nor construction in SF ever. I think we are back to heady times, and I would be really cautious as an investor in the next 2 years.

Yeah, I question that rebuild. If the array is being used along with the rebuild, typically the rebuild process gets put to a lower priority. I've seen IBM enterprise RAID 5 storage arrays take forever to rebuild if they were the main storage for a high transaction database.

This may be a little off topic, but I used to think RAID 5 and RAID 6 were the best RAID configs to use. It seemed to offer the best bang for buck. However, after seeing how long it took to rebuild an array after a drive failed (over 3 days), I'm much more hesitant to use those RAIDS. I much rather prefer RAID 1+0 even though the overall cost is nearly double that of RAID 5. It's much faster, and there is no rebuild process if the RAID controller is smart enough. You just swap failed drives, and the RAID controller automatically utilizes the back up drive and then mirrors onto the new drive. Just much faster and much less prone to multiple drive failures killing the entire RAID.

I think it's sad that at the end of his life, he was really fearful of death. So fearful, in fact, that he sought refuge in religion, but supposedly, it didn't bring much comfort.

I always think of that when I ponder about my own struggles with life, the human condition, and mortality. I really don't want to be that fearful of my own impending death if I get something like cancer.

No ways. I exercise a lot. I run three times a week, sometimes up to 7 miles each run. I also do lots of weights. Exercising has never helped me to stay asleep. My wife is the same way too. And she exercises just as much as I do. A lot of people I know with similar sleeping problems to this have also said exercise hasn't helped them out.

I've noticed that a lot of people, including myself, don't suffer from insomnia with age, but the ability to sleep deeply for 7 to 8 hours. Nowadays, I average 6 hours of decent sleep, but, no matter how rested (or lack thereof), I get up and feel like crap throughout the day. I have NO problems, though, with falling asleep.

I would like to see a study that follows the kids of poor immigrants. Almost everyone I know who came from poor immigrant families, including my own and my wife's, is doing well. We're all middle to upper middle class now. In fact, my family and relatives were so poor, they literally came to American with zero money. My wife's dad came here with only $50 to his name.

It would be interesting to see some statistics on that.

I didn't like some of what was wrote. Suffering shouldn't be praised, and suicide shouldn't be look as being weak. Some people just can't cope with the harshness that is life. Some people can't cope with the harshness of their mental illnesses. Some people just can't cope with the pain that is caused by terminal illnesses. To say that suffering is good, is to trivialize these people's plight.

Yeah, I'm also on r/math. The saddest thing to see is the periodic repost of jobs for math degrees. It really is sad to see, and it reminds me of why I was often depressed as an undergrad. It's hard enough that the courses are challenging, but wondering what all this hard work would lead made it even more depressing.

Yes to academia. Academia is hard to break into, and from what I gather from talking to a lot of math professors, it seems to have been this way since the 50's.

No on industry. I'm on other math forums, and judging by the constant reposts of "Finding a job with a math degree", I really believe that it's tough finding a job in private industry as well.

Personally, I decided not to do a pure maths degree but instead concentrate on statistics. The job prospects in industry are much better in that field. And, my goal was to teach at community colleges. From my discussion with CC faculty, their most popular math courses are statistics. So, they often look for people who have strong stats backgrounds. My plan is to find work as a statistician and work as an adjunct until I can land a permanent TT job at the community colleges. I just got certified as a SAS programmer, and there are lots of jobs at there I can do remotely.

I've seen permanent adjuncts / post-docs. There was a guy at my old school who was there as a post doc. He did his PhD at UC Berkeley. I can't believe that he has been jumping around to different institutions as a post doc or lecturer for over 10 years. It's quite sad. My friend did his Ph.D at University of Oregon. It took him 6 years to finish it. Then he spent 2 years as a post doc at University of Toronto. He finally got a job back home at a small 4 year college. I guess he's doing what he set out to do: be a university math professor. But, I believe him being from Hawaii helped him land that gig. They prefer locals who want to go back home before considering others.

Has anyone ever looked at how large some of these graduate STEM departments are by the number of students? When I decided to go back to grad school for maths, I realized that doing a Ph.D. would probably be fruitless. How did I determine this? I went to UC Berkeley, Stanford and UCLA, arguably the best math departments in the country based on the NRC rankings and AMS rankings, and counted up their graduate students. There were over 300 students. THREE HUNDRED. Three hundred brilliant minds with brilliant credentials with at least 300 other hundred brilliant competitors. That's not including the grad students at the other more mediocre schools in California like USC, UCSC, UCSB, UC Davis, UCI, UCR, and, god, I must be missing some. Oh yeah, UC San Diego. I was wondering, then, where are all these brilliant students going to go? Surely, there is not enough openings in academia, even at lower ranked institutions, for these guys. I went and checked for job openings in academia for math tenure tracked appts, and yes, there were only 10 jobs out there at the time. I then started piecing together things I saw in my own life's journey: brilliant mathematicians and scientists teaching and researching at second or third tier research universities. A lot teaching at teaching colleges (at my school, SJSU, there are several math professors from Stanford and Princeton teaching there).

It was then I realized that doing a Ph.D. in STEM is a pretty piss poor proposition. I would highly discourage most people from doing it, unless you really love research, don't care about job prospects or money, and that's all you want to do in life.
