Hard Truth #1: Getting laid off is a profoundly lonely experience.

When I was laid off, it was very comforting to rebuild community with others who were laid off at the same time.

We started a Slack instance where we:

* shared resources with each other

* complained and vented and healed together

* celebrated each other's new jobs

* continued the network for years after

Posted a job here once. Got 9 applicants, none of those were hired.

Sometimes a founding CTO needs to hire both an Architect and a VP of Engineering.

The trick of course is defining what the remaining duties are that fall up to the CTO. Specifically, making them desirable to that founder. Chief prototyper, evangelist, and vision-setter might be a good mix.

Long story short, there's a server somewhere, but most of the configuration is abstracted away. Instead of thinking of servers, they want you to think about endpoints (which they manage somewhat efficiently for you).
