Traitorous eight

Photography of the Nazi invasion, Kiev Ukraine, 84 years ago today. This photo is a perfect composition, artistically. And we know it’s just day one of a 1,000 days of horror ahead.

Ian, I emailed you a couple years ago when I felt Bench had become worse and worse for customers. I was sad to discover that you’d left and I felt the difference was definitely attributable to your departure. I switched providers shortly thereafter.

So, speaking as a former customer, the tragedy and timeline you mention pass the sniff test for me. So glad your next venture has been going well for you!

“Hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is now being held alongside fallen cryptocurrency tycoon Sam Bankman-Fried in a federal jail in New York, people familiar with the matter said.

Both men are in the same dormitory-style unit in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, which often houses high-profile inmates, the people said. Combs has been jailed since his arrest last week on sex-trafficking charges, but he was only transferred to Bankman-Fried’s unit of the MDC on Monday, they said. Combs has pleaded not guilty.

Bankman-Fried, founder of the failed FTX crypto exchange, was sentenced to 25 years in prison earlier this year after a jury convicted him of fraud and conspiracy. The judge who oversaw Bankman-Fried’s trial agreed to let him stay temporarily at the Brooklyn jail while he is working on his appeal, before he is moved to a federal prison to serve out his sentence.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons declined to comment.”

It’s been 15 years, perhaps it’s time for another dose of this?:

Apologize to HN: Sorry for Trolling 2 points by benreesman on April 17, 2009 | hide | past | favorite | 2 comments

I was reading my comment history and came to the horrible conclusion that I am a troll. In particular I'm the worst kind of troll, the kind where it's not always clear that I'm trolling. My childlike enthusiasm for debate (or maybe just my lousy social skills) have led me to say things that are nasty, inflammatory, sometimes clearly false, and ultimately that I have no desire to see appear next to my name.

So if I've offended any of you then I'm really sorry. I promise to reform, effective immediately.

Regards, Ben

Just a reminder that corporate structures are there to serve the scientists and engineers, not the other way around.

For OpenAI, their particular weird corporate structure was far too flawed.

The engineers and scientists will readily find another, and progress will continue.

Hey I launched Leet Resumes on HN a couple years ago - love what you’re doing with this. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25678568

The biggest challenge you’ll find is not getting the info OUT to the reader / recruiter / hiring manager, but getting the information IN to your system. You’ll start with the resume, but most people don’t put enough about their specific achievements and accomplishments in their resume in the first place.

As we write great professional resumes for free, we needed a fast, scalable way to get more info from each user.

We’ve used AI to help us ask better questions (“As a front-end engineer did you ever have to scale by 10x or orders of magnitude? What did you do and what worked well?”) so that we could get better answers and turn it into better information.

Will the Chat UI replace reading linear text? At our sister company Ladders, we rather famously ran the study that led to the factoid that recruiters look at your resume for six seconds on first pass. For a while, people were touting video as a replacement for resumes, but the challenge always ended up being that people can read/scan at far, far greater rate of speed than they can listen. I guess we will see the same trade-off preference development with Chat, but time will tell.

Overall, great innovation and clever use of the new tech.

The problem with Fred’s analysis here is that the people with guns, jails, and cops can always shut down software. Or any other human activity.

When computer science meets political science, the software loses.

Well unless the AI is going to pay you, it’ll be a human reviewing resumes for the foreseeable future.

The truth is that managers often don’t know what specifically they are looking for when they start hiring and modify and update their candidate profile as the interview process goes along.

So resumes need to be written to help you stand out in that process.
