This is frustratingly accurate. Through a zero sum political lens it'd be a handout to "big tech," so many politicians argue for keeping this on the books, but in reality S174 deeply affects small companies, new companies, boutique agencies, and individuals who want to consult or start smaller operations. I worked for a ~20 person shop that was gutted by this tax code change. It completely changed the affordability of talent.

Book series targeted at young readers benefit from this composition. My 8yo son follows a few series and he laughs about it when "the formula" reveals itself, but still enjoys the stories. You have to remember a novel – even a short one like a Goosebumps book – is a lot to keep in context as you're starting out reading. The predictable ebbs and flows of a series book help readers focus on the language and the things that are unique about each issue and mystery.

When we together read longer books that can't be consumed as quickly – like a Harry Potter novel – he has to work with me to remind himself about the callbacks and references to follow along with the increased nuance.

I loved the Goosebumps books as a kid and they will always hold a special place in my heart. It's a shame the basic structure makes it hard to enjoy them as much on a reread as an adult, but that was never the point.

Correct. The json data type is less performant and stores the data more or less as lightly indexed text. jsonb optimizes the storage format and allows for more JSON operations, such as extracting individual keys.

For this product, if the super-generic API doesn't offer/require a need to do complex operations, though, json may be adequate to lookup items by id and present them.

An acknowledgment of what? Apple does not owe you anything. You chose to buy their products, with or without the need for dongles. They have allowed feedback and the market to correct this by offering revised products.

This is a slick tool. I like how the thumbnail and PDF preview is live updating with changes.

Beer & Cheese Tasting!

We had a company event from City Brew Tours (based out of NYC, I believe, but we're in Philadelphia) where we were shipped boxes of cheese, crackers, and beers (or ciders or sodas at the employee's selection to support alternatives) and during the event were given a tasting experience over Zoom.

It was excellently done, gave team members a chance to socialize about non-work things, and we learned something, too.

I agree Heroku has in this way been a model acquisition, but in this instance I can't see Salesforce being able to make those assurances – they likely see Slack as a key interface for their products and services, and integrating the two to support that vision will require oversight.

I can still see a world where Slack is a tool that continues to operate and serve its customers, similar to Heroku post-acquisition, but Salesforce augments their services with Slack tie-ins (and vice-versa).

Short: there's a middle ground I think they can strike.

Seconded. FastAPI has been a boon for us in our project work and the auto-generated documentation is one of its very best features.

The lightning port can essentially loosen over time, meaning the “snap” of the cable grips less and the plug can become susceptible to falling out. This has happened to me, even as someone who takes good care of his phone.

The effect will be relatively similar -- you arrive at a new database with the proper schema/structure in place, but the difference is in execution. Doing this _within_ the database engine is likely 10x faster than loading the schema through a client library making a series of CREATE and ALTER statements (ala the schema:load rake task).

Spree e-commerce is a solid Rails engine that can be used a fully skinnable site and offers a full API for any integrations, customizations, or other apps you want to hook up down the line. It also has robust configurations for your product line, fulfillment, and shipping setups. Have built enterprise-level online stores on it, but it is geared for business the size you describe.

I'm a technical project lead at a small consulting firm. I manage the engineering efforts of two independent projects with team sizes ranging from two to eight engineers.

I have about 8 hours of regularly scheduled meetings (standups, sprint reviews, delivery meetings) with 2-4 hours of "as needed" meetings (client sync, etc.) in a given week, with 1-2 hours of company meetings, too. This does not count one-off help sessions and "fire fights."
