Essential Responsibilities

* Able to communicate effectively with other development team members as well as with all other Little Bird team members. * Able to work independently when given a clear mission. * Able to ask for help when stuck. * Able to ground work within user experience and technical contexts and priorities based on Little Bird’s overall business and technology goals.

Qualifications

Required * Several years of engineering experience. * Knowledge of Ruby and Ruby on Rails or Sinatra, as well as template languages such as ERB. * Familiarity with database query languages and experience with databases like MySQL, CouchDB, and/or MongoDB. * Experience with API data retrieval. * Excitement to live the startup life.

Desired * You want your data endeavors to exceed Abraham Wald's statistical insights during World War II. * You've worked through Leonhard Euler's Königsberg bridge problem. * You can eyeball a function and tell what will happen when it scales from processing ten objects an hour to one million objects an hour. * You can look at code and tell whether programmers were happy/frustrated/drunk when they wrote it.

I've got a problem it can solve: I live in a cloud of darkness, an infinite body of history and information all around me - yet just out of sight. I'll pay for it, too.

Note those two posts were authored by two different people at RWW. I wrote this one but not the one you reference 3 months ago.

I cannot disclose RWW's rate of pay but as I said in that post, the higher you go in that continuum, the more likely you are to be a consultant vs a journalist. And we are journalists ;)

I can't speak for those other blogs but at ReadWriteWeb (the most fabulous blog on the internet, if you ask me) we did some polling and ran this post on pay rates 3 years ago http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/how_much_do_top_tier_bl... To be honest, given the economy, I doubt things have changed that much since then.

Well, it was aggregating complaints of side-effects, which is a good thing for the pharma company to keep track of if they're going to sell such a drug. But yeah, that's why I felt uncomfortable about working with them, didn't continue and now joke about it publicly. Plus it's odd.

How is the title misleading? I don't think it is, and neither do a bunch of other readers who've commented, tweeted, etc.

It's more like the combo that's powerful: huge data, close tracking of effectiveness of recommendations and product quality, end result being open-ended subscription by user/consumers.

Like the part at the end where I said "it sucks this is happening under a proprietary platform with absurd privacy policies"?

I write for ReadWriteWeb, but I gotta say: KillerStartups is really good. TheNextWeb also finds a lot of things before anyone else I know does.

I just woke up and don't know what more to say about this right now, but please do know that the integrity of the collective news discovery and promotion process is something we think is important.

it's nice. would be even nicer if there was some way to cache tweets from my friends so I could search history. searching current can be done pretty well with Tweetdeck, I think. Google Reader is archiving a lot of peoples' tweets. See Dave Winer script to access. Nice smooth UI though.

Dude, check Twitter and the Etherpad blog post. Both are FULL of comments from people who feel very similarly. I'm reporting on this from a perspective that a lot of people share. Looking at your comments on TC's coverage linked here I can see you've said things like "it's better to know we have successful developer colleagues who sold to GOOG than it is to complain about your inconvenience as a user." So that's your perspective, you identify with the developers who sold the company. I'm reporting from another perspective.

Also, don't compare me to mashable if you want to have a civil conversation, that's just fighting dirty.

Wah wah wah. A stupid comment from a fanboy. I don't try to capitalize on the news for traffic, I report on the news in unique ways that ad value - sucka.

NYT coverage has zero discussion of data standards or interoperability. that's the story, imho

that's a great idea

a solid RSS strategy is subscribing to key news sources in your field, your competitors' blogs and search results, keyword searches, thought leaders and in the enterprise, internal company announcements, requests for assistance, financial, inventory or other information.

features that make an reader business class = support for authenticated (pw protected) feeds, a good mobile version, local/offline caching, displaying diffs when items in feed have been changed, administrative control over dynamic OPML files, etc.

sitting duck: not using an RSS reader well leaves means it is going to take you more time to absorb less information regarding your industry. RSS automates immediate delivery of targeted information.

I'm not entirely convinced that's the same thing. The examples don't match up. Maybe, though!

Vaksel - we scour the web far and wide to report on every hire we can find, from the execs that put out press releases to the low level developers who post on twitter or their blogs about getting hired.

it's our first week of reporting this many hires - we'll be reporting at least this many every week.
