As an autodidact I do buy books on various fields that interest me and I'm always looking for comments such as yours that can give me more information about the main texts in that field and what they cover well or what another book covers better. A light weight journaling of your learnings as you go along would probably be real beneficial to many (such as myself who has zero knowledge on the subject of DAWs and creating music effects for games). And since you said it’s very challenging maybe writing about it in small bite-sized learnings might make the process easier? Going from “I must learn all this stuff!!” to “let’s see what audio gems we pick up in our adventure today”.
Come on, somebody at Adobe spill the beans. Who was responsible for this debacle?
Since you’re already done creating your hardware product instead of thinking of a new product to follow up with, I would suggest a new business model: there are probably a non-zero number of people on HN that have a vision about making a hardware product. You can offer your services so the don’t have to learn all these lessons the hard way!
I agree. In fact you should make a (YouTube?) video showing the slide rule and how to use it and your grandfather’s history to preserve this bit of history for your family and family’s future descendants.

quite an interesting list of books for 2025. I’ll have to get some of these to read. Especially the Information theory one above and the one you mentioned in your review.
1. Why Machines Learn - Anil Ananthaswamy
Fantastic exposition of machine learning. The author does an amazing job of bringing a technical subject down to an easily readable level.
2. The Joy of Abstraction - Eugenia Cheng
Similar to the above review. I never thought Category Theory could be made so easily readable!
3. A Little History of Philosophy - Nigel Warburton
Small, compact book. A quick interesting jaunnt through the history of philosophy. Entertaining and educational!
Same with the Stanford university bookstore. Was one of the better bookstores in the Bayarea. Used to have a whole room of technical, science, math books. It too is a shadow of its former self. So sad.
One course per semester might be doable? Not sure how frequently the assignments are due because you could probably carve out some time over the weekends.
i bought a compilers book that was an Indian edition. The paper and print quality was so bad (like smudgy) that I could not read it and I didn’t think I was particularly picky about this. Not sure if I just got unlucky or if this is generally true?
Wow, this is so cool that you did this and this showed up right now. There was an online book (soon to be published) by Xavier Leroy on the history of control mechanisms in programming languages with the last few chapters on Effect systems.

I think if you were to write a post (or better yet a video) to demonstrate your usage of your workflow, that would be a great resource! I love working in M-x shell but your workflow sounds next level.

Exact same sentiment - scariest drive I’ve done, but this was in Maui, diving back from Hana at night. I’ve never driven in such pitch black darkness before with hairpin turns.

Anecdotal: Driving by my house (last month?) i saw a lane blocked and multiple police cars and various safety vehicles. As we drove past, i saw a Tesla Model X or Y, had gone over the median / lane divider, which is what 5” high? But the car was burnt crisp. You couldn’t tell what the original color of the car might have been. The road around it itself was charred black. There was no other car around to suggest a collision with another vehicle and there was no structural damage to the car. Made me think that maybe the car’s undercarriage hitting the median caused something to start the fire. But i’ve rarely seen a car burnt completely black, inside and out.
