Also they know that they can't compete in ICE vehicles with the established companies. So they started working on EV long before Elon Musk popularized EV in West.

Five years ago China did the most unconventional thing. They invited Tesla to build the factories and at a same time removed most subsidies given to local EV companies. As a result of competition innovation, optimization happened. Most of the local EV companies died. Remaining became almost the same level as Tesla and BYD became the new king of the hill (at least in China).

The unconventional decision by China may look foreign to western audience but it actually resonates to us who are raised by Asian families. So if you are a child in an asian households parents most of the time talks about a 'kid next door' who is good at study. The parents frequently tells their child to become as good or better than the 'kid next door',saying that we will give you as good environment within our reach to achieve it. It gives an implicit pressure on the child to become better. Obviously not all become as good as the kid next door but some prevails.

In the Chinese EV market case Tesla was that 'kid next door'.

For fentanyl crisis you should look at your own country to stop the demand and prosecute the people who have enabled it with prescribed opioids instead sheltering them and pointing fingers to others. Today it's China tomorrow it will be India or a poor country from Africa who can make those drugs cheaply as long there is ever increasing demand.

Case in point if slackers were found guilty in China (or any country of Asia) destroying millions of lives using prescription drugs he would have been shamed, his company would have been desolved and executed immediately instead of wasting years of time in court debating on the technicality of the issue in the name of giving proper justice.

Compare it with Microsoft's copilot branding. It's simple, both casual and business people can understand what it does. Also appending it to other services like github or office adds more value to them.

Hiding title bar and tab bar were confugurable before. When you installed tree style tab it automatically made the tab bar hidden at that time. It was the most customizable dev browser.

Then they rewrote the the UI engine replacing XUL and made Firefox a more 'user friendly browser' copying all UI features of chrome sacrificing the customization options.

I am a heretic now who is running Windows 10 with WSL2 and edge as primary browser due the points you mentioned.

They won't. They already have given both Apple and Google pass when chrome was launched or when smartphones took of. Mozilla sees Microsoft as devil's incarnation while Google and Apple are the ally in their holy war.

Well anybody will get wrong assumption on FB if he doesn't see the impact FB is having outside USA, especially in developing countries. it's the only game in town, a complete social package. Tiktok is another but it competes in one specific side.

Then surely millions people in east asian countries like Japan or Korea sitting at top of highest life expectency table having drinking rooted in their culture are anamoly.

It's very sad to see current state of HN. Such an wonderful article about how the author and his team is solving real time data processing of petabytes of data per day but this post has only 45 comments but posts about russia or what other companies are doing things that have no technical merits has more than two hundred comments.Also the comments here have devolved into wether the decision to do real time data processing of 'unrelated data' is justified or not instead of having thoughtful discussion on the design choices the author made. The decisions are coming from management to which most engineers have no hands on. But it's engineers responsibly to solve the problem to keep every stake holders happy. Engineers can leave if they disagree but some other engineers will take initiative to solve the problem.

When I started job life luckily i found HN. That time it was a small community of hackers who were focused on solving interesting problems and doing discussion on various approaches on how to solve interesting problems. I have learnt many things from those discussions and implemented some of them in the projects i was doing. HN that time was one of the reason of what I am today. I am forever grateful for that. But now new wannabe hackers who are browsing the site are learning mud throwing instead of gathering knowledge. I am very sad to see the current state of HN which helped me tremendously in my job life.

I occasionally check trending repositories of chinse language in github https://github.com/trending?spoken_language_code=zh and github repositories of Alibaba, tencent etc. From the look of it they are very focused on tooling/tutorials on highly salable distributed systems architecture. Java is very popular and spring cloud is their preferred choice. One thing I found interesting is that hibernate ORM is not used anywhere, instead they prefer MyBatis data mapper framework. Some of those projects are moved to apache foundation.

Semi related, SQL Server have query store feature which records query insights on production db and in SSMS you can see the query statistics on various metrics like resource uses, execution counts etc along with query plan applied.

I haven't dug deep into SQL server yet, but query store suggestions are good enough for now.

5 or 6 years ago I saw a presentation of Joe in Infoq. There he said "solution of the dining philosophers problem is to give fork to everyone". It really made me interested in actor based system. Now here I am, building financial system in java where akka is the vital component of the system. Thank you very much Joe. Rest in peace.
