My biggest problem with dealing with call centers is actually the technology. For some reason every time I talk with Amazon or Google call centers, every 10th second or so drops out from the call which is often a crucial piece of info which i'll have to ask to be repeated. It's quite frustrating that in 2022 this is still such a consistent problem.
I've always wondered what's going on from a technical side. Is it some sort of "signal delay adjustment protocol" that instead of speeding up and distorting the speech of the speaker like happens on video calls, these call center tech companies have chosen to just drop an entire second from the conversation? Or is it some other glitch?
Did these sponsors just start contacting you inbound or did you do cold outreach?
How is it abusable if you're only blocking the domains for yourself?
Can anyone explain the dip in power usage between 11am and 4pm? Why would less energy used between those hours?
There is an interesting exploration of this in the Altered Carbon universe. If people can become functionally immortal, will they inevitably grow tired of societally acceptable pursuits and move on to sadism?

The original question was "How do you get teachers, garbage collectors, plumbers, nurses, all sorts of manual workers ?" Those people all have some amount of money they can afford to pay their bills. Since a city needs some percentage of those workers, having housing they can afford is a big step towards attracting them.
If you compensate the developers' losses in revenue with tax breaks, how does it shrink the supply?

One idea is an expansion of a law already on the books in many cities. When you create a new building / housing complex (which will be 100% in a new city), you require X% of units to be "affordable housing". I could see the city just increasing the required % and then giving tax credits to developers to offset the lost revenue to them. Given that this city would be built in stages, it will give them time to hone in on the desired percentage.
There are many other types of sea vegetables such as Nori, Spirulina, Dulse, Wakame, Chlorella, and many more. Spirulina in particular has an amazing nutritional profile.
And while you're right that the current market for these sea vegetables isn't massive, chefs are starting to work more and more with them which is shifting cultural acceptance.
Traditional seafood gets a lot of its "Fishyness" from the sea vegetables at the bottom of the ocean food chain. So you can create a lot of beloved seafood flavors just using sea vegetables. As ocean populations decline, traditional animal based seafood is going to get more and more expensive and I predict there will be a demand for a cheaper way to experience those flavors.
And as chefs get better at utilizing these ingredients and if more and more farmers and companies start to get involved with growing these plants, i'm sure industry marketing initiatives will ramp up just like you see ads from the "Peanut Growers Association".

I believe MLB management agrees with you because they're considering testing moving the mound back a foot which would give hitters more time to react and should help balance the strikeout rate.
I completely agree that modern analytics has made baseball more boring. More strikeouts, more pitching changes, less stolen bases, more walks, and more pitches per at bat all make the game more boring for sure.
But basketball seems the opposite to me. Analytics has shown that except in a few superstar cases, back to the basket isolation mid range jumpers while the rest of the team stands around and does nothing (IMO the most boring play in basektball), is a terrible play call.
Analytics has shown that the pick and roll is a fantastic play in terms of points expectancy and I find it to be a really enjoyable play to watch because it often results in dunks and nifty passes or acrobatic layup attempts.
Analytics has shown that faster pace, shooting earlier in the shot clock, and getting out in transition more often to be hugely valuable strategies, all strategies that I think are more enjoyable to watch.
The perceived value of 3-pointer shooting has caused offenses to spread the floor creating more driving lines and making it harder for defenses to pack the paint which has created more offense which I think most people enjoy seeing.
I'd love to hear what you think analytics has done to make modern basketball more boring.

Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat are imitation meat made with plants, aka "Meat Substitutes". This company is what's known as "Lab Grown Meat" where the end result is basically meat at the molecular level.
So theoretically this will have a very similar nutritional profile to farmed or caught salmon. At least thats one of the goals of the lab grown meat sector.
It fact, it might even have a better nutritional profile because it won't be exposed to ocean contaminants like mercury and plastic.

So if we're generous and say FAANGs employ 100K engineers, that would be about roughly 2.6% of U.S. software engineers.
Both Greenland and Bermuda can blame their expensive packages on geography and uptake, but what about the United States? At $50.00 on average and coming in in 119th place worldwide, one would expect American packages to be considerably cheaper. But while broadband in the United States is widely available and uptake is high, lack of competition in the marketplace means Americans pay far more than they should compared to much of the rest of the world.
Does the HN community agree with the assessment that the lack of competition is why the prices are high? If so, does anybody have some explanations/links for why there is a lack of competition and some proposals to improve the problem? I know community broadband projects are starting to popup, I'm guessing partially due to this issue.
Also, is there a tradeoff? Is the "widely available and uptake is high" benefit in part because of the low competition?

Nice work. Have you considered creating a page/blog post the explains how you've used your own tool to find paying customers? Doing that would provide a ton of value I think:
1. You'll (hopefully) find new customers
2. By using your own tool regularly, you'll gain invaluable insight into UX issues and new feature ideas.
3. Potential customers on your site would get to read through a play by play story about somebody successfully using your tool to drive business results. Basically a meta case study.
Is the reason for the flat structure saving space? I know on older games, space is at a premium and referencing files from the root might save some bytes so maybe that's the reason due to shorter file reference names.
How do you create cores? I feel like I'm stuck at that point with nothing else I can do without them.

Through that article I looked into an organization Ram Dass was involved in called Social Venture Network which seems to have rebranded as Social Venture Circle.
The article seems to mistakenly say Ram Dass founded it (he's not mentioned in their wikipedia article at all) and a post on his blog seems to just say he "started to hang out with them" but it still seems like an interesting organization. Does anybody have any experience or thoughts on it or their initiatives?

I believe that improving your ability to think critically and find information quickly when you need it will benefit you infinitely more than spending that time on watching the news.
Sounds like a great consulting niche. It's a simple to understand value proposition and I imagine there is somebody powerful at many successful companies that would love to see the huge server cost line item go way down on their P&L.
