Understand the business goals. Understand the _customer's_ goals.

Bring better ideas to the table on how to achieve them using your understanding of what is the ideal mix of easy/hard and long-term/short-term.

Track your efforts against the bottom line financials. Earn the raise you seek.

I don't believe claims of perfection were made. Merely claims of a standard of excellence.

So you're an IC suffering under "incompetent management". Yeah sometimes you just can't work around this, but often times you can learn to sell your ideas better to those specific people. Maybe they don't jive with your delivery. Change it.

If you speak the language of revenue, you can rationalize almost anything that will grow it responsibly.

If the language of revenue and various delivery tactics still don't convince your management, then it's time to leave.

I too struggle with focusing on the negative sometimes, so I constantly encourage myself (and the author and others who are feeling similarly) to redouble efforts to optimistically communicate in the language of revenue.

Actually, DeveloperAuction is moving into other cities soon enough. After speaking with the team a bit, I got the impression that they see Silicon Valley as the testbed so they can perfect the process before taking it more universal.

I'm not really sure why this is so hard to see, the auction model is so weird, of course it'll take some time to figure out the kinks before "going global".

Yeah but the maintenance overhead on such complexity... Just wait till the teenage years!

Nah, given the design decisions inspiring this codebase, I don't have any reason to believe your daughter will have any challenge extending and reusing its functionality once she's grown up. ;-)

Our solution to recruiter spam:

Become a recruiter.

I'm sorry but how is your business model any different from that of a recruiter? (Other than claims of human or AI filtered quality.)

I just don't see how you will not run into the exact same problems that existing recruiters run into.

What makes you different than a normal recruiter building profiles of companies and employers and soliciting both? This just looks very familiar, abeit drop dead gorgeous. :-)

I guess if good design and AI are enough to solve the recruiter problem, then count me in, it's just not clear to me how you are really different from your landing page. (Other than of course it is beautiful, seriously fantastic work.)

It's a joke.

Tongue in cheek, self referential and self deprecating with a dash of realism.

Made me chuckle.

Step 1:

Throw out this attitude. It's utterly useless.

Step 2:

Go bomb five technical interviews and learn from them.

Step 3:

Ace the sixth.

"It is taking time to make things whole again..."

Try saying: 'It is taking time to make things "feel" whole again.'

I know it's a small difference, but it provides (imho) a more accurate perspective. Perspective is a lot, if not everything.

Point is, you're already whole, but it takes time to feel it.

It's ironic. This is exactly the behavior that the system seems to want to avoid, but inevitably incentivizes.

So shame on him? I don't know. Major props for being honest.

One could argue you were subconsciously influenced toward posting a shaming comment because of the karma incentive.

Of course, you may just be joking as well.

It's certainly funny either way.

Great idea. I definitely like the use of apple/ios design elements with the tabs/cells.

For me, personally, I'm afraid this kind of thing might go the way of the twitter app. At first really handy, then mostly distracting. =-/ If only I had more will power.

We'll see how long I can keep it up there!

This is a great way to get all of that boilerplate app code out of the way from the start.

However, I recommend taking a look at RailsApps Composer for deeper customization.

https://github.com/RailsApps/rails_apps_composer

It's a snap to use their DSL to write scripts that generate rails templates like this:

https://github.com/wnadeau/rails-application-templates

Using their composer, I wrote my own "Mailchimp" recipe for bootstrapping a Mailchimp integrated app, including twitter bootstap (customized with Mailchimp colors the general taste of their brand), backbonejs, oauth sign-in all from the start.

Not to rain on any parade, this certainly looks good (and I did actually pull down the code and take a peak).

If you like doing this kind of thing, I think you'll be really pleased with something like RailsAppsComposer.

A nice, instructive article to those rubyists who may be unfamiliar with aws-sdk. Does anyone else think the title here may be a bit sensational/click-grabbing?

I mean it lead me to think it was some new engine or active model plugin. Alas, this is just a how-to for the aws-sdk gem.

Once again, helpful article overview of the aws-sdk, just not quite "Rails new seamless integration"
