CGEn | Data Scientist | COVID-19 research | Canada (remote or onsite).

CGEn leads a nation-wide Host Genome Sequencing Initiative to sequence genomes of 10,000 Canadians to help understand the genomic architecture of the host response to SARS-CoV-2.

Several roles are being considered. The skills required for these roles include any subset of the following:

• Data cleaning and visualization, and dealing with missing data.

• Database management and data preprocessing in R, matlab, python or SQL.

• Website development, including backend development using python or administration of apache servers (or prior experience with the pheweb software).

Nice! I got bored before I finished the first level, but not before I was trying to use stuff like ^,$ and ctrl+f, ctrl+b, 5l to get to the end of the tunnels faster and those didn't work. Is more advanced editing unlocked in later levels? or is this just for getting off the arrow keys? I can imagine some cool things in a more advanced vim game like * for teleporting between words, mm to drop a bookmark, :badd to get to a new level ...

What's the js to make a site editable with your cursor (you can click on text in a <p> and then you get a cursor in it where you can insert more text, also changes your mouse cursor to indicate that you can edit, over text)? I saw it here on hn once in the comments, but then I couldn't find it again later when I needed it. (I had also saved it in a vim window but forgotten to save it, ugh!)

In pathology, it is sometimes hard to publish radical ideas in traditional & high impact journals. They prefer breakthroughs in established approaches.

I read the plos article when it came out. Basically, when a cell realises it is infected with a virus sometimes it will try to kill itself. There are a bunch of checks it does to make sure killing itself is a good idea. Many viruses try to counter these checks. DRACO works by short circuiting the detection -> kill self pathway.

It's a great idea. But sometimes a large proportion of cells can get infected when you have a virus. Someone might get in a lot of trouble if all their infected cells instantly died. Like, can anyone speculate what the side effect would be for an AIDS patient? I don't know myself, but I'd want to know more about this before saying this is a miracle cure.

the case where n=2, k=1 was an IMO problem around 2001/2002 (and the parent article says it is first from spivak '97) and it's pretty easy to see the generalization if you know about fundamental groups. I used to pose the n arbitrary, k=1 case to other math students :D (parent article claims this version is first from mathpuzzle.com, 2002)

Here's a trick: as you are typing in your l/p, click somewhere on the screen to defocus the textbox and then type some random characters and then click back on the textbox. And also type random characters into the textbox, and then select them with the mouse and overwrite them with correct characters. Do this a bunch. Almost all keyloggers just log all key strokes, then people scan for stuff that looks like "john@example.comLkd98/x,". There's still the chance that your internet cafe has a more sophisticated logger on it. But if you do this you've made a real step to fight keyloggers in internet cafes.

I pledged. In fact I'll donate $100 if they blackout. Those who oppose blackouts claim that sites like wikipedia google might lose money, or that they are essential services like utilities. I'm not sure if the essential service analogy is valid, but it doesn't matter: correct me if I'm wrong but the letter of the law of SOPA says that wikipedia.org can be wiped off the internet as soon as it passes without ANY due process, just because some people have uploaded images they don't own copyright for. Of course, apologists will note that shutting wikipedia down won't happen, because the bill is aimed at stuff like counterfeiters and torrents. To this I can only say it won't be the first thing that happens. What it does is that it gives the US government a guillotine around wikipedia's neck that they could pull at any moment: the legal power and infrastructure for shutting it down. This is a total affront to the independence of wikipedia as a non-profit organisation (and to google & facebook as corporations).

By pledging we can reduce the cost of a blackout, make it more economically viable for them, so they do it and show the world that if wikipedia(google, facebook) really are essential, then their independence should be protected from the growing nationalistic forces of the US government.

There's a small error in the formula for O(N): the way he's written it it looks like for all n, there is a k such that kg(n) >= f(n), ie k depends on n so take k = f(n)/g(n) and all nonzero functions trivially satisfy it. It should be there exists a k such that for all n kg(n) >= f(n). Pedantic I know, but on the other hand I wouldn't call these "beautiful equations" associated with O(N), I'd instead call them the definition of O(N).

There's also o(f(n)), g(n) is a member of o(f(n)) if the limit as n goes to infinity of g(n)/f(n) is zero. Finally, there is asymptotic equality: f(n) ~ g(n) if the limit as n goes to infinite of g(n)/f(n) = 1. O,o and ~ are all subtly different, but if you're just trying to prove upper bounds then O(f(n)) is the one that comes up most frequently, which is why it's probably the only sort of asymptotic analysis most CS grads know.

You can make this argument about any nice domain name. Does Facebook Inc have tacit ownership of the concept "facebook" (collection of photographs of people, in case you've forgotten the real meaning)? How is this greatly different?

How about this: instead of showing you match %'s, they show you profiles and you rate them. Then use recommender systems [1,2] just like netflix. There are two immediate problems with this: you have the cold start problem [3] and also if you don't show random profiles, then you introduce bias into their rankings. The first problem could be solved with side information (you still answer questions) and the second with a nicely chosen exploration/exploitation trade off. PMF[4] for the win!

Anyone have a non-terminating C compile? (Other than X11. I compiled that from scratch back in ancient times and it took a whole day. At least it seemed like it wasn't going to terminate.)

I really wanted to short this ticker during the IPO, but I was worried that I would have had to pay dividends that would go over my budget and I'd have to give up the positions before they were profitable, or that I'd accidently get futures instead of options (and potentially lose an arbitrary amount of money overnight). Does anyone know how one could have gone about shorting this in a way that made money with a budget of say $2500, (i.e., in a way that would have incurred a maximum loss of $2500) given what happened?

Since when are such cynical attempts at humour posted on hn? Best not to read something like this if you want to stay motivated enough to do the work required to get "post-revenue" whatever that means.

Why is everyone shitting on this in the comments? It's a demo: you can't complain that it's hindering usability or enjoyment of the pictures when there is no context in which you might use it or enjoy the pictures. When I saw this I thought it might be nice for the website of a magazine like vogue or something: some sites are about decoration and style, usability can be at the back of the priorities. Just because it wouldn't survive A/B testing on the landing page of the most recent groupon clone doesn't mean it's not useful, cool or fun.

I'm usually surprised and inspired by the optimism and constructiveness of comments on HN. I sometimes view reading HN as a salve against cynicism. What the heck is happening in these replies? Usually when HN comments are critical, they are also constructive and the criticism is well thought out. In these replies some people are denigrating the entire indie-festival-poster style that is carrying startups to stardom calling it pase or not as likely to convert. And yet this style is preferred on all the rockstar YC/startup sites. In this case the only one who knows the conversion figures is the parent. The rest of the replies are fueling their cynicism with guesses and assumptions and inexplicably turning against an aesthetic that I feel we've built. HN: What the heck?

This is a very nice list. I didn't know most of these tools before, and they look very useful; I'm going to try and learn some of them. I found the link in the topic a bit disappointing. It mostly contained tools for system diagnostics rather than work flow optimisation.
