That's what I was thinking. 5% is the upper limit of the fraction of his wealth that a rich person could safely spend each year anyway. So his income is no different than if he'd kept the money. The only thing he has lost is the ability to change his mind about where the principal goes when he dies.

I would change a few things if I were you. People are going to give you a hard time for (a) using the R word, (b) the implication that writing your actual app is merely a matter of "wiring up the back end," (c) the email address.
Seems like it might be worth separating the goals "learn math" and "get degree." Presumably it's the former you want. And if so, might there not be people good enough nearby that you could hire as private tutors? If there's a university nearby there should be: grad students.
Wow, that is a completely bogus patent. It is just a description of their software, translated into a patent. There's not one aspect of it that's non-obvious.
Students should organize a boycott of them. That would put pressure on them to stop this nonsense.
