This is exciting for Server. For far too long the Server is only caring about throughput. And for server and PC CPU design they have been lacking behind Smartphone in IPC.

This is only the start of Nvidia Server CPU era. They also have a much better software team than Intel and AMD. This would hopefully mean a lot of the non-x86 issues could be doubt with on ARM platform.

I keeping saying this, the best AI / LLM coming out isn't another question / answer chatbot or automate my email and essay.

Yes. But subjective testing by IgorC ( of HydrogenAudio ) shows it wasn't as good as Apple. It was a lot better than previous FFMPEG though. I believe we will have a few more listening test results coming out soon.

That may leave some niches...

iPod has over 80%+ of portable music players market share. And almost all the others shipped at the time, from Creative to other Chinese brands, car audio, TV and media player has AAC support. AAC-LC hit a sweet spot of near same MP3 hardware support while being so much better. 320Kbps MP3 still don't compete with 256Kbps AAC-LC on Apple Encoder. On the other hand, there are only a few samples where 256Kbps AAC-LC isn't transparent, barely noticeable difference but no artefacts compared to Opus in professional listening test, 95% of people wouldn't even notice. Opus do shines at 128Kbps to 160Kbps range where AAC-LC don't compete ( or dare I say wasn't even tuned ), but loses nearly all hardware compatibility.

If we were streaming, and storing music or audio tracks with 128Kbps then Opus would have had strong advantage. But we live in a world where we could even stream uncompressed audio files with plenty of bandwidth left. The file size of audio is so small it makes it negligible in consumer settings unless you are Youtube. ( I would still prefer a 256Kbps audio codec, for me it was instantly noticeable. I think Youtube at one point switched for premium but decided to switch it back )

For web then I guess there is an argument for Opus. But I keep saying the same with Video Codec as well. There is a whole world of Video and Audio Codec usage outside the web and PC / Smartphone. We could have used AAC and called it a day. And it is not just patent unencumbered, it is patent free.

If I was for a new Audio Codec, I just wish it could achieve what AAC-LC 256Kbps did with 128kbps. i.e I take quality first over potential bitrate savings. But the half bitrate marketing hasn't been true since MP3 Pro, HE-AAC, HEVC and VVC for "low bitrate". Neither HEVC or VVC could achieve what AVC did with 2Mbps in 1Mbps. VVC being very close, I would guess FVC / H.267 will finally be it, but at what complexity cost? We have hit sort of limit of compression. Both in Video and Audio. And today we have very different set of trade offs between file size, connection bandwidth, compatibility and encoding / decoding complexity then what we did 10-20 years ago. And I would choose compatibility + slightly larger file size for its simplicity.

There is. MPEG-5 EVC Basic Profile that is Patent unencumbered, with only dozens patents that is soon to be expired, and EVC High Profile that competes with VVC in terms of quality.

There is also LCEVC ( Not connected with EVC ) that is a scaling layer on top of existing video codec. You can apply LCEVC on top of EVC, VVC, HEVC or AVC as well as AV1 and AV2. LCEVC has been selected by Brail as part of their TV 3.0 technology stack on top VVC.

While there are momentum on LCEVC, I actually wished EVC gained more momentum. I guess everything is too late now.

(MP3 is in a similar place. AAC and Opus are technically superior, but everything supports MP3.)

Actually MP3 is more like the H.263 / Divx here. AAC-LC is more like H.264. The difference in support of AAC-LC and MP3 is near zero, both in terms of hardware and software. While AAC-LC is vastly more superior. AAC-LC has been declared patent free ( all patent expired ) by Redhat for 9 years already.

The only part that is not perfect is there isn't a decent open source AAC-LC encoder. While you could use QAAC using Apple's encoder in iTunes. It would still have been better if there was an open source version. Luckily we just have a new AAC encoder with FFmpeg, it is doing great for and although sill not Apple's quality. But hopefully improve in the future.

Or Apple could have just open source the god damn thing.

But last part of my reply was more specially on Digital ID. Which current system does not help or hasn't been implemented.

Not everyone has a driving licenses. But the UK has a PASS scheme [1] which frankly speaking isn't very widely used or enforced.

But yes, if they were to implement it, it is highly likely to be some private contractor taking insane amount of money for something that barely works.

I am not exactly against the idea, it works in some counties, but I fail to see how it will work in the UK.

Slightly Off topic: For those working inside the industry, Is the professional space still dominated by 3D Studio Max and Maya?

I just checked Lightwave 3D and Cinema 4D is still getting updated. Just found out Zbush got bought by Cinema 4D. And Foundry decided to wind down development of Modo. A lot of these names were big in late 90s and early 00s. I am wondering if everything is still pretty much the same.

Speaking of 3D Modelling software I am still pissed the whole CGtalk forum got deleted and decades of community knowledge wasn't even backed up or sold.

Just reading the HN comments I found most interesting is that Rust and Zig have future improvement that related to each other's strong point.

Rust will be getting faster Build time in 2026 and 2027+. This post shows incremental build went from 10s to 3s in 18 months. And lots of improvement coming as well. While it may not be 35ms in Zig but it is not too far to imagine Rust could have 1s or even sub second incremental build in next 2-3 years.

On the other hand Zig is getting more tooling for memory safety. Opening Access to IR and even other ( although non official ) side project to have borrow checking implemented.

That is on top of the subject languages ROC, which for whatever reason really hit the "friendly" part for a functional language.

Generally speaking, I think Apple tends to win on anything related to ex-employees. I am not sure if this is normal across Big-Tech. But surely is for Apple.

And this isn't some inflated market cap either, apart from 2021 and 2022 they have been making $5B+ Net income in the past 6 years. I would love to dive into how Paypal makes money because that is an order of magnitude bigger than I thought. There must be some market in which Paypal is popular and culturally accepted as by default payment.

Which also makes me want to rethink how much Apple Pay is worth if it was a separate business.

I actually originally asked on what you were suggesting because the idea that BSD is not Free software died a more than decade ago. That is the whole reason why Stallman wrote the page and even mentioned Rust as an example. Along with issues came up from Tivo etc. I am surprised it is now rising up again.

ten years is a very long time in technology,

10 years is relatively short time in hardware, that is only at best 4 cycles. In today's world it is only 3 cycles. The amount of time, energy and resources required to switch from ARM to RISC-V only to save $100M a year makes very little sense. That is assuming you can get the same performance switching over in the first place. Which right now isn't the case in the next 5 years.

And I wouldn't be surprised ARM gives Apple some other patents protection as well as discount on other IPs.

Had it not been Braun insisting not making a USB-C shaver I wouldn't have brought a Panasonic Lamdash Pro. But also thanks to that I discover Panasonic being better shaver overall.

I am willing to bet 80-90% of user don't want / need / care if it is an Native app. They simply want the website / PWA bookmark icon on their App Screen selection.

The problem right now is the experienced of getting a PWA on to an App screen is not user friendly or in someway user hostile because it goes against the fundamental service revenue of their App Store model.

I assume Zen 6 won't support these, so we are looking Zen 7 at the earliest, which is 2028 earliest.

In the meantime x86 don't have much in the roadmap that compete well with ARM vendor's offering. And that was before Nvidia decided to join the fight.
