Using this event to think about what an asteroid hitting the ocean might be like is quite clever.

"The author suggested that with proper scale corrections, analogies could be drawn between the impulsive impact of the Lituya Bay rockfall to asteroid impact on ocean floor sediments and on such impulsive wave generation. Although, the trajectory angle, terminal velocity and total mass and density of material of an asteroid would be significantly different than those of the Lituya Bay rockfall, it was suggested that these could be scaled and adjusted for the purpose of validating a model of asteroid impact."

I remember the Heroku founders espoused 6 hour work days for developers. They felt that this was the daily limit for creative workers - and that there was not only diminishing returns after 6 hours, but potentially negative ones (due to bad decisions made when overworked).

I don't think he's saying that it will take a long time for them to turn a profit, but that they never will (or only ever will see the tiny profit margins that, say, the airline industry does).

A down year for music (though it unfortunately seems like I've been saying that for the last 4 years). I've listened to everything in the top 20 in the critical list, and the only albums I'll likely be listening to in 2017 and beyond are the Radiohead and Bon Iver entries. Certainly tracks here and there I loved from Beyonce, Kanye, Anderson .Paak, Chance, and Frank, etc, but none of the other albums have grabbed me yet from start to finish. (That can always change, of course!)

Loved The Social Network movie. But the movie's soundtrack (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross) has had the greatest effect on my coding. Still listen to it while working almost every day. Maybe matched only by Sigur Ros's Takk as my favorite Getting Shit Done soundtrack.

Have you tried writing a complex wep app/api with C#? It's an absolute joy to use. Python still has it beat for math and ML libraries, but for getting up a quick web app with robust (and easy) data queries (LINQ) it's pretty unbeatable.

I suppose this is the 21st century equivalent of TPing houses or stealing the mascot. Unfortunately for this dude it's also a felony, apparently. (Though I have to imagine they will let him plead to something lesser.)

This is a great (the only?) way to start. One thing I think is also really important is to be a domain expert in the field of your idea, or be ready to find co-founders who are.

Obviously domain expertise isn't totally applicable for something like having a great idea for a new spin on a social network, but where you are getting into a vertical (like healthcare) it is probably essential. Otherwise you won't know how to make a product that the professionals in that market truly want.

So if I get this, HBO Go, Netflix, and Hulu Plus, I'm looking at something like $60/month (plus my broadband costs). (I can get broadcast TV over antenna, though reception isn't always great, even in a big city like Houston.)

Almost approaching the costs of buying cable, right?
