I'm really thought it was further away than that for any sort of gaming or real computer use, but I have no gauge from growing up in a house without anything but a tv till I was almost in middle school.

Every company I've worked at will not allow me to leave my laptop at the office. They all claim it's something about the office not being safe from theft in some way or another. My bet is it's just a lot easier to get people to be constantly connected if they have their work laptop with them at all times.

Not a ban on annual subscriptions, but I need to show proof of completion of a course to get the reimbursement for it. So if I bought pluralsight now I'd have to make sure I complete a course by Feb 2nd and show proof completion to get them to approve it to take out of the 2019 budget. If I submit proof on Feb 3rd they'll take it out of the 2020 budget.

They have to happen by that Feb 2nd deadline. After Feb 2nd I get the 2020 budget that I can use to go to conferences with though!

Yeah, this is a bit more strict than I'm use to with a growth fund. Like I said, I couldn't buy a book on elixir since it doesn't relate to the day to day, but I could buy things about professional growth or things like "How to Win Friends and Influence People" or programming books that aren't explicitly about a language we use, but tangentially related to the day to day (Swift/Kotlin book to help with mobile, even though we use React Native)

Looking at places around me (Atlanta, Ga, USA), the second I filter down to < 750 sqft for any 1 bedroom apartment or condo on redfin.com I am left with about 5% of the search results. The average size seems to be about 900 sqft. Before buying a house most places I rented were also around that size, and my house 2200 sqft (204 sq m) with 3 bedrooms.

One of the things I am finding is the amount of project freedom and the amount of process and documentation are the inverse of anywhere else I've ever worked.

Most of my jobs have had very straight forward goals of what needs done next, with an endless backlog of already prioritized work. There has very rarely been much documentation around anything though.

This company is more vague high level goals that teams have the ability to figure out any work they want to do that furthers that goal, but there is a very high bar for documentation before, during, and after features are done. Even git commits have a very rigid structure to them!

Not sure what it’s being used for, but know that ublock origin for Firefox now has a portion of its code rewritten for performance reasons in wasm.

I feel like that would have happened this time if there were a viable alternative. I know if they kill the ability to opt out of the new redesign I will be looking a lot harder for one.

Question for someone with experience with graphql. I have a data heavy react application I'm working on that would benefit from something like this, but almost every single component has the ability to refetch it's data individually. If you have all of these fragments being passed up to the single query being called, how do you handle a situation where you want the explicitness of refetching only one of those fragments, but getting it on in one initial call?

The only way I could see them doing it in a few weeks is swapping it out with something with a very similar api like inferno or preact.

I don't feel they are saying start with the data, before you even have an idea. More, "What data do we need, and how do we structure it for this problem?".

They don't load a routing solution with this, but the most used router (and my favorite) is React-Router [0]. To get basic routing setup takes less than an hour, and has great docs.

Would this make for a good way to get into aws/devops since it narrows the perspective of their services?

I have no experience with devops and want to learn to manage my applications directly (mostly use services like now or heroku currently), but looking at learning aws always seemed intimidating with the 600 different services they run.

I think that depends on how well the transportation is in the city. Me and my wife would have no reason to have cars in New York City, but we lived in Atlanta for a few years and public transportation is not a viable option unless you are willing to take an hour or two to get anywhere not directly on one of the few train lines so transportation costs are less than $100 more for the gas to go into town from the burbs.

I have a 47 inch 1080p 120hz TCL with no smart capabilities that I've been extremely happy with over the last two years. Looking at models now they do seem to have a lot of smart tvs, but if you can find a non smart model I would recommend it.
