I never bought into the apple ecosystem for the exact reason of not being able to feel ownership over my own device.

However i also understand the challenges google has. They/vendors are selling consumer devices with a consumer OS on it. Not everybody is tech savvy and a fair bit of people are too easy to trick into installing things.

An alternative could be to offer two versions(perhaps on phone activation). A business like version where a business(and people on HN) get full access. MDM and all. And average Joe mamas version that comes with more guard rails activated.

I can personally live with that 24 hour wait once, if it helps protect the average people from scammers etc.

Ouch! It looks very sweet i must say. Having worked on a similar idea for a while as a side project, it does hurt to see something better coming out.

You really need competition on your networks. In Denmark the carriers are forced to rent out their networks to competitors so that we don't get a monopoly.

I don't know any solutions for setting up a mail server easily. But my general opinion is that software is poorly written if it requires an arcane setup all kinds of moving parts.

Usability studies shouldn't just be focused on the UI but equally on the setup an maintenance of server software. You would need to find a balance though since you won't want to remove features just because of ease of setup.

Sorry for ranting a bit and take the discussion a bit off topic.

Software is complex but it would be nice if us developers put energy into making complex setups feel less complex. It might even benefit security and less malconfigured services.

I would mean it's never the users fault. In most cases it's poor design. Poor interfaces.

I'm not an apple fanboy but apple has clearly done something right in that ballpark.

If the user can't figure out how to use your software it's back to the drawing board and come up with a solution that the user understands.

On the same time it's a battle on which users you want to please the most. In the ideal world you have an interface that don't get in the way of either first time users or power users. But that is a pretty tough nut to crack.

Most non technical users has no clue what javascript is so asking them to turn on something they don't know what is in an unfamiliar environment is an uphill battle. Especially if it's hidden in some options in an options window full of tabs that has funny names for a first timer.

DRM is evil. DRM is not made for the user but for companies that tries to protect an outdated business model. DRM is certainly a technology that should never make it to the HTML5 standard.

You write that not all DRM is bad. Can you come up with an example where DRM is "not bad"? I can come up with plenty of bad examples that hurts legit users more than the users that finds their way around the DRM.

What is there to investigate? The criminals has clearly been found thanks to the whistleblowers. The whistle blower is the hero while the criminals are NSA and the government for doing such acts against democracy. A democracy needs to be transparent. Having a language that is not inherently designed to be run in a sandboxed environment should not be allowed to run in a browser.

While i truly love Go as a language i think it might still not be mature enough to be used as a full fledged language for Android. The garbage collector is still not mature and could use some optimizations.

You also call Java a systems language. I'm not sure i agree in that view since you don't have direct access to the hardware it runs on. You're still running on JVM which does jit compilation of your code. Java is a high level language falling into the came category as the .NET languages and Python.

I would still very much see Go on android as a fully supported language. Go is beautiful.

I think the headline is a bit misleading. As far as i can read this is more about googles Content ID that is to blame. I didn't read anywhere that an actual DMCA takedown notice was filed against him.

What i would rather see is that companies move off US soil as a response to US Law. And stay off TLD's controlled by the US.
