The 1st one is pretty active in that you get feedback also from the community.
Hey Tim,
Upwork. Create a profile as a technical writer, and put links to your docs.
I've picked up partime gigs for API documentation, product usage documentation / User Guide, with screenshots and gifs on that platform. If you are US based, even better cos lot of Companies want to hire US based freelancer for TAX reasons and what not.
Upwork search for client even has a filter that says "US only" and I've used that as a client also, to hire freelancers from within US.
Besides traditional technical writing, there are also gigs for Technical blog posts on various subjects. Avoid the one-off gigs that are low paying, and focus on startups or companies that have already paid for other gigs (you can see it in their profile).
You will do really well as a proof-reader.
Facebook is hemmoraging users.

Last I checked, they were serving 2.37 BILLION M.A.U.s.
...That's literally like 30% of the world population. If you exclude babies and under 5, the number is probably more like 40 to 45% of world population.
Facebook now serves 2.37 billion monthly active users, an increase of 55 million on the previous quarter.

20$ arm from Amazon works just as well.
Do you feel the chair does justice to the price?
Was thinking the same thing. Also what about the $300+ Monitor Arm. First time seeing someone pay an arm and length for an arm.
How has this affected me? I’ve mentally atrophied. I now feel like I can’t talk about any subject with more than a centimeter of depth. A half a decade ago, I could dive with you to the penetralia of convergence theorems of hypergeometric series, but now I cannot. Even my programming has taken a toll even though I do it every day. I find myself abstaining from studying advanced topics in programming and computer science, and instead sticking to this comfort zone of what I know.
How does one go about overcoming mental atrophy? Especially after spending a decade or more programming, I think most (if not all) developers battle with this problem...
If any one of you has successfully done this, please share.
Nice work! Looks like HN / Reddit in terms of functionality and layout.
Really impressed that you've built all the features like RSS crawler, taxonomy, user and role management etc.
Calling Sex Workers 'Models' is kinda rich.
#2, you can walk into a Target and by prepaid SIM cards
That is in direct violation of #1.
#1 ....from somewhere without cameras
Target has cameras everywhere, even OUTSIDE the Restroom (for "Loss Prevention") and inside the elevators between floors, as well as at self-checkouts and customer service kiosks.
My cats love me to death. I never force myself on them and never try to train them to obey me, greet me etc.
We think cats are "unfriendly" because they do their own thing, and don't OBEY people like Dogs. When an animals doesn't obey you and do your biding, you think they are "unfriendly".
Cats are also not "reward" oriented like Dogs, i.e. you can't "train" a cat to obey you and do your biding by giving it rewards like you can with Dogs.
Paywall.
Since when did loss making pre-IPO companies become "TOO BIG TO FAIL" ?
E*Trade, Schwab, and pretty much every other brokerage is playing catchup with RobinHood, which has had free trades on stocks and options from the very beginning. This has caused a steady exodus of users on these commission charging platforms, crossing over to RH. It's especially pronounced with Millenials and Gen-Z / "Post millenials".
You may not always get the best pricing, and also there are no market trades as of this writing on RobinHood, but the RH UI handily beats everyone else in terms of ease of use and simplicity.
The options trading functionality, for instance is very simple. You select options and then it presents you with a list of (screen) options on whether you think stock will go up, down, or sideways. Based on that, they show you low risk, high risk call options, put options or stangles and straddles. You can place a trade with a couple of taps. If you want to get more specific and sophisticated, you can choose the expiry dates and select your own call / put options.
Compare this to TD Ameritrades UI and Schwab's UI, it looks like some guys from the 90s, stuck in the 90s, are still working on the UI team.
Truly clunky, horrible, confusing and annoying.
The story holds it's own, and doesn't really need the "Overnight Millionaire" click bait.
Also,
He and a buddy from elementary school started RxBar in 2012... By the time RxBar became a business with revenues north of $100 million, with virtually no outside investment, Rahal was grinding at it from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m daily.
This is anything but "overnight". Reminds me of the "overnight success" quotes in many forms, but recently from Shopify founder.
It took about 10 years' time for Shopify to be an overnight success. - Tobias Lutke

Out of about 4,000 non-retweets by Trump occurring during market hours from 2018 to the present, only 146 moved the market.
I thought the impact was a lot larger than that.
I stand corrected. Agreed, Butt-buddies = Gay.
Attached at the hip is more like it. These are guys you grow up with and know their darkest secrets :)
Hello HN,
In 2017 I built and launched a job board of Tech Jobs that sponsor work visa - Think H1-B in US, EU Blue Card in europe, Startup Visas in Netherlands, Germany etc.
Traffic: 3,000 to 5000 visitors /month
Applicants: about 3,000 so far who applied through my board.
Users: Mostly from India, China, Ukraine and some from Europe.
I'm based in San Francisco, US. Since I didn't grow up here, I have no network and could not trust anyone, so I was "going it alone" for all these years. But I've hit a wall now and need a co-founder or someone who can take an active role in helping the site grow and monetize.
I'm having difficulty in the marketing area and in getting paid listing from startups. I did some blogging on Quora and am an authority on H1-B visa questions. I'm willing and able to put 5 to 7K USD into any work you think might help fix the problem areas.
I'm looking for a growth hacking / marketing co-founder (or any other role / title experienced in growth marketing) who can review the current state of the site and figure out what needs to be fixed and how to move forward in order to get paid listing, and to service existing users. I'm getting a lot of requests to list non-tech jobs.
I have results from survey question on how to improve it, and I can share that with you.
Also, I posted a question on hiring a designer (cos the theme feels ugly and outdated) and got a lot of feedback from HN community on not focusing on that. Discussion here => https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14431770
Lastly, please write to me only if you are passionate about this topic i.e. immigration and work visas.

theblogdoctor (at) gmail.com.. if the existing founder can't recruit a cofounder from their network?
For immigrants like me, who didn't grow up in the US, the "existing network" is largely absent / non-existent. So we always have difficulty trying to find co-founders as the people you can trust the most in your network are your "butt buddies" (in hindi we call them Chaddi-dost) and they are not here.
And most engineers, esp. technical engineers are introverts and do not like going to networking events.
Very informative article.
The author didn't really delve into whether he uses meds to cope with ADHD.
How do other people who have ADHD cope with it as startup founders? Do meds like Adderall, Ritalin or Concerta work? What about Nootropics?
Asking cos this situation seems to be very common in our profession i.e. starting some side project, getting overwhelmed with perfectionism, distractions and never shipping. Is that ADHD or just plain procrastination?
This has been discussed over a dozen time already here.

The engineers frequently work from 9am-9pm and then some weekends. Is this common practice in the industry?
Yes, quite common. I've been a software engineer in the Investment bank industry for about 15 years, worked at various hedge funds, brokerages and asset management firms in Boston, NY and recently in San Francisco.
Just 1 out of 6 firms I worked at had any kind of test driven development. In my experience, the lack of testing is not from a "hustle" mentality. It has more to do with the fact that the Fintech space in general, and investment banking in particular always lags behind in technology and processes. In companies that I tried to incorporate some sort of unit tests and TDD, the push back always was "We don't have time in the project timeline for writing tests. There is a QA team that will do that." Either the benefits of tests in software development process hasn't been "sold" to the IT Managers, or they are completely unaware of it, coming from a traditional waterfall methodology.
Another thing that's been the driven of this workflow is that traders and portfolio manager routine so some sort of un-scalable automation for their workflow. I once worked with a Bonds trader who had an enormous spreadsheet with over 80 tabs, links to bloomberg realtime pricing, a bunch of macros and such. The work that my team used to get was to take that spreadsheet and turn it into a database driven application that wouldn't "Freeze" or "choke" periodically as it used to in Excel.
In such situations, which is also very common and you'll likely run into it, your manager will ask you to work with said trader or portfolio manager and do the conversion. In these type of projects also I wasn't allocated any time to write tests. As soon as a portion of the application is ready, the traders or PMs would themselves run tests against a QA instance. In order to keep my sanity, I would write tests that wouldn't be in source control and wouldn't tell my manager about it.

Not surprising. Netflix, Comcast, Amazon Prime and other video streaming service charge you the same as the DVD rental, but force you to watch the entire video within 48 hours from 1st starting it.
Personally I find this very annoying (why do the do this? What does it cost them to let me watch it within a week or so and not 48 hours?).
Esp long movies like "Wolf of Wall Street" are not practical to watch in a single sitting.
I have a Samsung DVD player that I got for 40$ and depending on the movie, I find it's cheaper or same price to actually BUY the DVD from Amazon.com (with prime). Ex: Wolf of Wall Street was $4.99 to stream and view within 48 hours, or keep paying $4.99 until you finish it. The same DVD ( NEW ) was selling for $5.49 on Amazon, Free shipping so I ended up buying the DVD.
We are receiving many messages regarding collaborations with influencers, Instagram influencers. We kindly would like to announce that White Banana is not interested to “collaborate” with self-proclaimed “influencers.” And we would like to suggest to try another way to eat, drink, or sleep for free.
Or try to actually work.
