I'm a somewhat technical founder currently bootstrapping an elearning startup - Tapfun. Although I have a biz dev / marketing background, I wanted to be able to contribute on the product so I rolled up my sleeves and built all of our iOS apps to date. I grew up with computers but was never deeply technical (just building websites for extra income).

We have over 1M downloads on iPad and everyday tens of thousands of young students use our apps. Recently I hired some contractors to help build the next gen of our products with a proper backend. We have our first school client for the platform and they are rolling out an app for all of their grade 1 students using this technology (in place: contract iOS dev, backend, front end).

I've realized that I really need a technical partner so that I can trust someone to really own the technical side of the business and I will focus on raising a seed round and growing the customer base. I'm planning to move from Toronto to the US in the fall (either NYC or San Fran) depending on how my accelerator applications go.

Even though i've been at this for 3+ years i'm open to bringing in a cofounder. Seeking full stack expertise (bonus points for ML experience) with a desire to make a huge impact in the learning space. Drop me a line (email in profile) to chat about how education will change in the future.

What are the hardest lessons for founders to learn during YC?

I notice that the pricing plans don't reward the middle tier as compared to the first tier.....would have expected that middle one to offer savings per SMS sent versus the first tier. My 2 cents feedback. Service looks very useful, congrats!

By this logic app developers shouldn't publish books because some turn out bad. I think 37signals might take issue with that, rework or not.

I've made an inquiry about a much better one that you may be able to buy....sitting dormant. That's what i'd look for, really solid names that you can buy for not too much....worth it.

Agreed. It just seems like you're pulling a fast one....as a potential customer all I really focus on is that dollar amount per month....I don't really factor shipping into the cost of your service.

On the homepage it says $5/month and then $10/month on registration. What's the thinking here?

I played with it last night. The UI is really intuitive and the model makes sense - worth a dollar.

You need to FOCUS. Pick one thing and give it your all. Don't dabble. I repeat, pick one thing. If your not dreaming about it, that's not the right thing.

These services miss the point - spend a little more and buy a name off someone.

The title of this post should really be "your idea is worthless if you can't execute on it." When you have the technical skills to implement ideas, they become incredibly valuable: witness google, hotmail, youtube, facebook....etc.

Selling dirt to China really skews these numbers....and as a Canadian I should know.

I don't think Mike is writing in the spirit you suggest; he's just arguing that you have to work hard to achieve something great. Is there something wrong with that argument? Of course, VCs want the people they invest in to work hard....does that surprise anyone? No one has to take VC money.....know what you're signing up for.

clasio better than classic! really? clasio is not a good name....it simply presents too many spelling problems.

This is why in-app purchases are so effective. Charging everyone the same price all the time doesn't make sense with digital goods

so the argument here is to follow the steve jobs model....if you want to study liberal arts, drop out so you don't have to pay and just sit in on classes.
