A really nice example. I tracked the data acquisition and fit an ordinary charging curve. For anyone interested, a 25 line script w/ data is here: https://pastebin.com/R0b1XSV0

Some insights:

- The peak DC voltage seems to be around 1.15 kV.

- The time constant is around 440 s. If you were to assume a simple RC-circuit with a constant voltage source (which it probably isnt), you would end at around 100 Ohm for the resistor.

- The start of the charging curve is not at the same time as in the video indicating that some voltage was already present from experiments before the video

Also, I am pretty sure it is not inductive coupling but capacitive because of several reasons:

- It doesn't look like a coax cable but more like an ordinary thick wire.

- I am pretty sure he didn't ground the cable at the far end and thus did not create a loop necessary for induction. And if he were, inductive coupling with ground in between would result in a very large voltage drop - If it were inductive: A single loop covering that little area would need way more turns than just one.

I believe you that the efficiency argument played a role when they decided to reduce the life expectancy of the light bulbs. The cartel doing 'cartel-things' aside, the 1000h-limit probably was a good decision even though I think that they ultimately did not do it for the consumer.

Hah, this isn't surprising: An internal leaked Google document (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35813322) a couple days ago pretty much pushed the idea. Still interesting to see the action follow so short afterwards.

Three quotes from the document:

- "Owning the Ecosystem: Letting Open Source Work for Us"

- "Google should establish itself a leader in the open source community, taking the lead by cooperating with, rather than ignoring, the broader conversation."

- "Open source alternatives can and will eventually eclipse them [OpenAI] unless they change their stance. In this respect, at least, we can make the first move."

EDIT: Misread "open to use" as "open source" and figured it was behind a signup. Sorry, my fault + maybe wishful thinking.

Is this really true? Or just when using Red Hat systems? I don't know too much about the boot chain, but I always thought that after the ROM stage, usually GRUB would take over directly from the UEFI.

Yeah, could be. But still that does not support the argument of "feed the data to western governments".

And this list shows that it appears to be majorly the directions E,S,W (so not directly from village A). Then how is this an argument?

It just shows that everybody steals apples, making the accusation "villagers of A are to blame" superficial. That's the point it tried to make.

I would be interested on why my conclusion is wrong. At best, one could draw nothing from the data as it does not show any relation to state actors. And if this conclusion is drawn, then why did `mike_d` blame the western state actors in the first place?

Think for a second about this: Did you think that the link `mike_d` provided supported the argument "... feed the data to western governments" with the emphasis on 'western'?

I see your point. But then how is the accusation 'west scans internet' connected to 'see this map of countries of origin'? Because I thought he would back up this claim with this source/second paragraph.

If other people (and arguably other govt's) are scanning too, then saying 'west scans internet' seems somewhat superficial. Not that I deny western state actors scanning the internet, its just that everybody does it.

I think the solely reason why JPEG XL did not go off is simple: It had no lobby. No large tech company actively promotes it and so, many people hadn't heard of it. Ironically, the deprecation of it in chrome made me aware of it in the first place.

Technically, JPEG XL may be a superior contestant. But from a 'social' point of view? Disastrous, especially considering it already has "JPEG" in it. (To be fair, its also quite young...)

I really hope JPEG XL gets more traction because it seems like a really good successor to the old namesake.

Yeah, it's quite a well written paragraph in terms of style. Really good story-telling. And it starts so innocent as well, building up something rather mundane with trivial short and repeating sentences. And then, bang, hints at an explanation of Niemanns behaviour with that of a spoilt brat.

I disagree: Using docker makes it incredibly easy to tinker without real consequences or hassle. Want to try out - say - Heimdall? Create a docker-compose.yml file, an nginx reverse proxy config, and spin up the container. Don't like it? Remove said files and container. Thought about using a wiki for a project? Same thing.

For me, containers are just abstractions similar to packages, or OOP objects, or even apps. And as long as a service fits into this view, I think docker provides a great way. But, sure, you can overdo it and end up with more complexity than less (e.g. Nginx Proxy Manager).

Reliability. That's what Google traded for a quick and sudden exit. I think the damage is far greater than the rather small number of people in and around Stadia.

I guess there is a message: "When a Google product does not show a reasonable growth after a certain time, it will be killed". There are many examples (See https://killedbygoogle.com/), and I think people will more and more consider this when jumping on a newly launched platform that they will later rely on.

Is this even comparable? I mean, for C you have a three-way comparison and for C++ there is only a two-way comparison.

If you run the code by yourself you end up that C (while calling the compare() less often than C++) needs more comparisons (i.e. more '<' and '==') kinda defeating the argument of costly comparisons:

Such simulations usually consist of three major systems (atmosphere, land, and ocean) that are coupled together at their geometric boundaries by a coupler that 'communicates' values like temperature from one domain to another. The coupler is needed because of different grid geometries, time step size differences and other aspects.

You initialize the system at some known state (I.e. set the temperature, pressure, etc. at all grid points to real world measurements) and then integrate a complex differential equation for the next time step and so forth. So it is not like a automaton. Finite elements analysis comes closer, but I think they use a different scheme like finite volume methods.

A lot of insight can be gained by [this](https://pure.mpg.de/rest/items/item_3379183/component/file_3...) paper. The first 10 pages should give you a rough overview.

In the article, Gleixner is quoted to have said this: "printk() is the last thing I am going to clean up [...]. Then I am going to hand over to young people [...]."

Odd text. Take a look at the first figure with the heading "Landfalling US Hurricanes have declined".

1) If the citation indicates that the figure comes from the year 2018, how can there be data until 2021? If you look at the original figure (Fig. 2 in [1]) you see the same layout with data until 2017, indicating that Shellenberger added data to it.

2) The figure title "Landfalling US Hurricanes have declined" is not in part of the orignal figure which is important because:

3) Shellenberger conveniently leaves out a very important fact in the original figure caption: "The p values for the linear trends are 0.33 for landfalling hurricanes and 0.61 for landfalling major hurricanes, indicating that neither of these trends are significant." (emphasis mine)

In other words: The linear trend is due to statisical variations and insignificant.

The lower half of the text tries to frame the picture of "Alarmists vs Scientists" by using N=1 empirical evidence, coincidentally thats also where he starts to use adjectives and more 'emotion-painting' words like villified, vicious, etc.

Two peculiar side notes here:

1) The first three and only moves of this game at Julius Bär Generation Cup with Niemann as white is the same opening as the first controversial game (2022-09-05) at the Sinquefield Cup but with flipped sides (Magnus white).

2) Chess.com, the organization that decided to ban Niemann [1] sometime between these two games based on his online play behaviour on that platform, just bought Play Magnus (a competitor to chess.com that Magnus formed) less than a month ago and is in the state of merging. [2]

Oh wow, I find the text really bad and flawed. The thing that tipped me off is the wording. In the text, the author used a lot of two word quotation marks indicating either verbatim text or text they wanted to make sure to just emphasize ("violated", "a coincidence", "absolutely safe").

When you start reading the text, you get the impression that the author tried to frame the incident like this "The kid violated the safety rules, it was his fault because he did not wait.". But when you translate the orginal source with deepl, the text (and I guess his only source) comes across a lot different [1]. For example the authors headline feels very misrepresenting having read the russian news info.

Then that last quarter is a tangent about the deathly robots. And thats where it gets really bad. I have to say this: It feels extremely manipulating and fear mongering, a mixture of misrepresented ancedotes to sell a story or make a point. Examples:

A) "According to one 2015 study". In the link, there is no study. There is a link to an US OSHA database search with 48 entries. Whats weird is that "one 2015 study", and "according to the US occupational safety administration" refer to the same database (OSHA). The authors word "indeed" seems circular logic as if he has checked that with a different source. And while it is true, that there are 32 fatalities reported to OSHA, the conclusion " according to [...] most occupational accidents [...] have been fatalities" is blatant misrepresentation. First of all, OSHA did not say anything in this regard, the authors statement is based on the OSHA injury database search with the filter for `keyword=robot`. And with a quick search, I can find at least two non-fatal robot related injuries, that are not keyworded with "robot" and thus not part of the authors own research [3], [4].

B) "Robots used in medical surgery were also held responsible for the deaths of 144 people between 2008 and 2013". When you read the example of medical surgery in the second to last paragraph, you may think, 'oh man, 144 people in just 5 years'. First of all, that number is not correct: The number of deaths between 2008 and 2013 is 143 (See Fig. 3), one death is from 2006. He also conveniently ignores the fact that robot system errors are in fact declining (See Fig. 4), or that 75% of deaths are after the procedure due to e.g. septics, or that the injury and death reports have often non-single-root cause.

Robotic injuries are by no means to be ignored, they are tragic because very likely they could have been prevented. Working with roboters is dangerous, but what the author did is just really bad journalism: Using a story of a robot chess accident to sell a fear mongering piece about robotics.

But its a lot more than just about the "need to suffer for a foreign country", isn't it? Its about the geopolitical interest of Europe. To be dependent on an autocratic foreign power (in this case gas) shows the problems.

For example, if Russia takes over Ukraine, it would make Russia by far the largest exporter of wheat in the world (from 22% to 33%) (second: US 16%) [1]. They would gain additional power in other market commodities like corn, sunflower, steel, etc.

Russia is already playing with their resource exports, I expect them to use it more whether or not they managed to achieve their goals regarding Ukraine. And other partnerships are building and increasing too like BRICS, CSTO, SCO.

Step back and think for a second: Countries staying neutral because they are dependent on the aggressors export resources are exactly that type of influence that superpowers like to have.

You mean, he was charged and found guilty of "Murder-For-Hire"? This I don't follow. I thought overt acts serve the purpose of evidence for the charges/counts rather than being charges itself.

In any case, DPR clearly concluded, that paying someone to kill someone else in order to preserve his anonymity/enterprise was OK. He even committed it.

I think I can clear it up: The accusation of murder-for-hire would not hold up. The FBI would not be able to prove the required elements for the deed, because in order to prove it, the FBI would need to actually drive or mail something with the intent of murder [1].

In the released indictment [2] (Apparently there seems to be a superseding indictment), DPR was charged on four counts. Count one is "Narcotics Trafficking Conspiracy", none of the counts are "Murder-For-Hire". But, there are three overt (motivating) acts for the "Narcotics Trafficking Conspiracy": a) Provide a platform for selling drugs b) Solicit a murder-for-hire c) Logging in as admin on Silk Road

So, while the charge "Murder-For-Hire" probably seems hard to prove (as stated above), using the intent of it to justify the count "Narcotics Trafficking Conspiracy" worked here. In a sense, I believe, DPR can not be labeled officially with "murder-for-hire", but in order to protect his "Continuing Criminal Enterprise" and as such commit "Narcotics Trafficking Conspiracy" it appears that he would have committed a "murder-for-hire" crime.
