Hat off to Mr. Mason for a genius idea, but in the wildest dream I wouldnt come up with a business where you ask a store to cut their price 50% and share 50% of the remaining 50% with me just for announcing your deal. when this just came in public light, to me it felt like an insult: I thought no way a store will lose money on each merchandise sold because there are not in charity business and to me it was simply an insult that before that deal they tried to rip me off with jacking up the price 150% (since they would still make money after the discount and 50% to Groupon).

its important because FB is the biggest social network on the internet. Believe it or not, many people still dont understand or get what "social web" means. Having FB stock publicly traded (company more transparent) and strong earnings would prove to the masses that web and social net is sustainable AND profitable AND here to stay. And it already works! look what happened with Zynga stock after FB IPO papers hit the daylight.

if it really become a problem I dont think Fb/Zuck can stop hackers/programmers from building tools to export user profile, all photos, data, etc.

its quite simple VB stand-alone (so they dont block one IP) application with IE window in it. you log in, and VB is scrapping all the data creating excel file with contacts, saving images organized in folders for other web import, etc). not that big of a deal, right?

in your example, can you explain how FB is better than AIM/ICQ or any other instant messanger in what you trying to do?:

I heard it so many times users saying they need facebook for this or that but in reality, they dont. Its like my sister says she needs to go to google to search for facebook to click on facebook link to go to FB.

maybe its not to you, but if users/observers stop judging what they use or see, one day everyone will be ripping off (not "getting inspired", but copying or stealing) each other, because, well noone says a bad word so its a good thing to do.

re: Linkedin: I found it hard to believe. I receive the same emails from them for years and most do not open /straight delete. and they never stop.

With the speed we humans progress in technology and science (think today versus 30 years ago), I think its reasonable to say in next 30 years we will master scanning/printing on the atom level.

By scanning I mean taking any object (or living form) and shoot it with some wave to obtain a matrix image (like MRI) but on an atom level.

By printing I mean you will have an .ato file just like a CAD drawing and printer will print a 3d object but instead of using plastic or some material it will print using single atoms.

This technology will ultimately solve all human problems, lets only pray that it will be developed by some consortium of civilized and reasonable countries.

Transportation will be fixed by ability to "teleport" people. your atom map will be saved and transferred over Internet to a destination, where a printer will print you out. Within the time once mastered this, we will be able to solve all health problems. You will be scanned and all your health issues fixed by an algorithm working on your image file, then from your image reprinted healthy, perhaps even without that pot belly.

Our cities will be rebuild (reprinted) from a scratch by this technology.

I know this sounds like a heavy delusional science fiction, but todays scientists are already able to change metal into gold by shifting atoms, its just process alone is extremely expensive, making it useless from a financial point of view.

They could look very deep into the "made in china" "issue". Lookup "Kluska" - owner of company Optimus in Poland. One of the richest man in 90s. Basically, CBS imprisoned him for months after he allegedly broke the law by exporting parts to foreign countries where PCs were assembled and brought back to Poland. The issue was that he did not pay tax out of the assembly. After years of litigation (bail denied), he was free man, while his company went bankrupt and he was left in debt after fighting with Government. Polish IRS (Urzad Skarbowy) did not even apologize.

it always amazed me reading youtube sell blurbs again and again how instead of raiding it and closing for obviously at least 3/4 of content being illegal and persecuting owners, they got bought by a multibilion company with Board to execute and stockholder to answer to. And now they are heroes for the deal they pulled off. I dont find the difference between original youtube owners and megaupload owners business-wise.

it would be very interesting to watch whether FBI/officials will go only after Megaupload (big fish) or they will make a case out of each and everyone who had their account and illegal uploads hosted there.

the lesser IMHO would be consumer who spent that money on anything else than entertainment, so if it wasnt beer or drugs, then it was better spent money

agreed but for how long? further, playing poker for cash is slightly different than feeding your cows and selling sunflowers. I am sure not everyone will switch.

a similar article made me think if I ever owe any digital audio whether from my own CDs or from internet, I would have stored it on encrypted drive, preferably encrypted with more than one encrypting algorithm, and either download from work/starbucks etc, or at least owe wireless router so if they go after me, I could claim someone was using my wireless router without my knowledge. I could just hope case against me wouldnt be that strong that they would weight between me giving out a key to my hard drive and lets say 15 hard years in jail.

EDIT: and then in court I would say I forgot the password because I havent been using this drive for a while now.

it would be great to know if its possible they had an insider. how otherwise would they know that other links linked to the same content were linking to exact the same file that DMCA note was sent to take down. Otherwise it was unfair and thats the purpose why safe harbour exist -- it protects you a small company from millions of users uploading their content and being shorthand or not having boots to check each and single file whether it violates someones copyrights or not.

I am not sure if this is entirely legal.

First you say you didnt make a copy, but "rip". Its called ripping because DVDs content is locked with an encrypted key, so locked DVD with a movie is not just a folder with files you can copy over to your desktop. Years ago there was a movie when they forgot to lock the key and based off of it software developers were able to build a key decryptor for any encrypted DVD. Most DVD ripping software is illegal throughout the world, at least some software vendors got lawsuit over their software functionality.

Further, while I dont have a link handy, but I recall there was a discussion on HN that 9th circuit make it illegal for anyone to stream any copyrighted content, whether to themselves or a group of people. So uploading it into cloud and then getting it back out of it technically is illegal, AFAIK, but that was month ago when I saw this posting.

hmm... this actually gives me an idea for a project/website. you plug your linkedin account and it builds a page with all those fancy colors and graphics, and charts, etc takes dates of your jobs, ask you for likes and dislikes, etc etc.. and then you can choose from 5 different templates... and your own subdomain...

the problem is that many times the world follows US laws and regulations and applies those locally (also: student being deported to US based on broken UK law that UK itself wasnt interested in prosecuting)
