I immediately thought this looked too absurd to be real, but I wonder if my lack of octopus knowledge helped me out here. I know octopi are pretty smart, but I don’t think of them as being too surprising in their capabilities.

Let’s say you used your credit card to spend $1000 this month. The money is spent. At the end of the month it’s time to pay back the credit card company for the $1000 you spent, but you say: sorry, my debt limit is only $600, so you default on your debt and now your credit is ruined.

That’s what the debt limit is like. Financial responsibility would be not spending the $1000 in the first place. It’s wildly irresponsible to spend the money and then decide not to pay the debt, but Republicans consistently threaten to do this because so many of their voters don’t understand what a debt limit is, mistakenly thinking it is a spending limit.

I have the same problem. For me what helps is having a schedule, you do your thing at a certain time automatically every day, which seems to lower the activation energy. For one-off tasks it helps to set myself a reminder that I intend to do whatever it is at a certain time.

But I still struggle with this for sure. I could always use more advice myself.

I know we are all speaking from our own experience here, but I’ve never even heard of a woman being disgusted by or leaving a man because he cried. I’ve cried in front of every long term girlfriend I’ve ever had and it’s never been a negative, only positive.

Could it be a cultural thing? I’m American and I’ve always lived in major coastal cities.

Have you considered working for a company with goals that you find more meaningful? For me working in biotech has provided that, but you need to find what's right for you. Don't spend your life working on "clones of other similar products with a slightly better price point". Your words!

Therapy probably couldn't hurt either, but you should make your career move soon if you can. Burnout takes a long time to recover from. Personally I burned out from working long hours and it took years to recover from, even though I was enjoying my work and found it meaningful. Don't overwork yourself.

How normal am I? 4 years ago

Meanwhile I was weirded out because it guessed my age exactly. I'm also 34 and I'd like to think I look a bit younger, but the algorithm doesn't agree.

Looks like the official NHS policy is that you get a checkup every five years if aged 40 to 74. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-health-check/nhs-health-ch...

I'm not a doctor but that doesn't seem often enough for an older person. I'm an American in my 30's and I just had a checkup, and my doctor told me to come back every two years. Of course the American system is pretty awful in its own ways, especially for those who are uninsured.

Yeah, I can't say I've noticed any latency though, as long as I've got an ethernet connection set up. Also a good idea to turn on whatever your "game mode" is on the TV. I use one of those flat ethernet cables and run it under my living room rug to my TV.

I imagine using steam in big picture mode would be equivalent if you're not streaming though. Maybe it's something else, I just can't remember a Windows pop-up ever interrupting my gaming whether I'm playing on my TV or not.

I've been writing a book and I do something similar. After every writing session I show my partner what I've written. It gives me instant positive feedback and keeps me from spending too much time rereading/editing old chapters or whatever. I've been able to relax on that a little bit as the project goes on, sometimes I have to spend every other session planning or doing research, but at first it really helped me to get the habit going.

I'm writing fiction so this tip isn't as useful to me, but for non-fiction you could try writing a series of blog posts, and then later stitching those together into your book. The posts (hopefully) give you some quick social likes to give you that dopamine hit.
