CHIP $9 Computer 10 years ago

This is amazing. Just need to figure out how I can attach a battery to it and everything in my house will be a computer.

Here is a place that sucks the money out of the poor for no particular benefit: check cashings.

You cash your check for a good percentage of it. If they had a bank account they wouldn't need to spend that money. I don't know how it is in other states but the last time I opened a bank account in California it was a pain. The amount of information needed is certainly not possible for a huge chunk of people.

a sign of the continuing global trouble from plummeting low oil prices

Gas is one of those things I have no control over. If it's expensive I have to pay, if it's cheap I have to pay. I'm dependent, and in a city like Los Angeles the alternative is impossible. They raised the price of public transport to a point where it is not even convenient.

So when I go to the gas station and it's cheap I'm happy. I fill it up and have a smile on my face. Am I doing it wrong?

Let's encrypt looks so cool with its very few steps. But then you install and you get all sorts of errors not me toned on the page. I spent a good 5 hours debugging yesterday.

When it finally works I see that the certificate expires in 2 months.

If you create a website with wrongly attributed quotes Google will pick it up. And the more people complain and link to your website as incorrect the more popular it will get and eventually people just start making memes and sharing on all social networks and then the quotes becomes true in the eyes of the googlers.

Very interesting how the jet engine is a complex mechanical device. Sure there might be some software controlling it from the cockpit but the bulk of the work is mechanical.

This sounds amazing. I have been working on a similar sidd project for almost 2 years now to make my pc similar. I briefly wrote about it [1] but have encountered my challenges along the way.

The PCs we have at home are so powerful yet they spend 99% of their life being idle. When your computer is on for the sake of being on, it's an opportunity to have it process information from the web.

I'll get my hand on one of those asap.

The problem is, if you focus solely on cutting down image size, it's an invitation for the designer to add even more images.

I certainly remember bragging about my well established single sprite for most resources. Soon enough it became 20 unmaintainable sprites with duplicate content.

There is always the possibility of Facebook listening to conversation. But it is also possible to figure out your interest using context time travel. Google does it all the time.[1]

Imagine scaling this idea. Imagine you know everything a person goes through. Everything. In the right context, you will be able to predict everything this person does. By studying his past, you can determine his thoughts all the time. Here is something that happened to me a few years ago.

I've watched a Mexican show on YouTube for a few month. Let's call it a soap opera for now. A month later, I was chatting with a friend in Mexico and I've mentioned the show. She mentioned another Brazilian show she liked. This conversation was happening on whatsapp. The moment I jumped on Google, on my desktop machine, all I had to do was type 2 characters on the search bar and Google completed it with the name of the show she was talking about.

Flash wasn't the problem entirely. If they fixed the security issues we would be better off. The reason we hated flash is because of how advertisers used it.

I stopped reading half way. The mobile Web is amazing. The verge is the kind of website that is broken both on desktop and mobile. And unfortunately there are too many websites like those.
