I create websites for fun. None of which have made any significant impact on society, but I'm trying to change that.
The comments of a submission are valuable to those other than the participants. To readers that don't or won't comment, the concept of 'live active discussion' is moot. In fact, I could argue that it's most beneficial for a reader to wait until the comment activities die down.
Either way the link to another similar thread is an odd thing to be tired of.
Off topic, but why does Google return "About 187,000 results" for ("* is about to *" site:wired.com) and only "About 14,600 results" for ("is about to" site:wired.com)?
Isn't the second query less restrictive?

No, because when you bookmark you have to remember to go back to your list of bookmarks to re-read the article
I have a folder on my bookmark bar titled "Articles". When I don't have time to read an interesting article I see, I add it to that folder. When I'm bored and can't find anything to read, I open that folder.
I'd argue that most people's pain point isn't lack of remembering they have articles saved to read.
In other news, The United States has launched a "Freedom Campaign" against itself to locate and seize weapons of mass destruction.
Alcohol makes me sleepy and lose the ability to concentrate. I have no idea why people enjoy drinking when they're trying to get stuff done. Especially if any of that "stuff" requires significant brain power.
Apps like candy crush are edge cases that make general comparisons meaningless.
Given most successful apps aren't anywhere near as popular as candy crush you're not comparing apples to apples.
The chances of building a successful anything are low. Even lower for the first attempt. So if you take 2 years to build something...you've stacked the odds so high against yourself you might as well not even try. And if you're the one paying the bills, 2 years is a long time to wait for a failure.

If you want a job, show some hustle. If you don't have a job and need one, why are you sleeping in on Monday?
To the heart of the discussion, these should come out on a fixed schedule to give everyone a fair chance.
Could not agree more. It's unfortunately a common (and obviously automated) way to get page views. Extremely aggravating.
Put a list of related articles at the end. But don't underline terms like "radiation pressure" and expect me be happy when you don't immediately tell me what that is. And especially don't put the article I'm reading as the first result.

It provides OP, and others, with information as to why it was useless to help prevent future useless comments, improving the overall comment quality of Hacker News. Albeit, my method was crass.
OP asked "why". OP didn't ask, "Here are the facts I've researched and understand, do you agree/disagree?"
The former is lazy and relatively useless, the latter is an opportunity for enticing discussion.
If we're being spun by the super blackhole in the middle of the galaxy, then it kind of makes sense to have one.
These 'tails' are not created by centrifugal forces, so the fact that solar system rotates around the center of the galaxy doesn't explain the tail.

I don't think it has anything to do with hindsight. Even if you were, at one point, for spending every dime on the "war on terror" and now you are opposed, what does that mean? You're in the same exact place as you were. All worked up with yet another opinion. You're not a corporation with a lobbyist. You mean nothing.
Terrorism prevention spending is an easier pill to swallow/get behind/comprehend/profit from/ compared to any other type of possible "thing" tax dollars can be spent on. The government needs to spend money on something. The economy depends on it. But what?
People are obese. They have long lists of health problems and are plagued by the high cost of healthcare. But somehow the one thing that can help them directly (healthcare) alludes them. How is that such a difficult problem?
But mention terrorist or the potential of an attack and people will usually get behind all kinds of different programs and spending. We'll fight these damn terrorists together. Hand in hand! For FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY. We might have to give up a few things. Want to read my emails? Eh, they're mostly just funny pictures of cats...so I guess that's fine. Oh you need money to fight terrorists? Here's a trillion dollars. If we get some cool gadgets out of it afterwards, then that's awesome! Just as long as it has a spill guard because you know I'll be sucking down some soda when I use it.

Why is that?
I don't know a lot about re-writing a code base in a different language, but I doubt the time/effort required for the re-write is the only consideration. You're not just replacing the source, you're replacing the entire development process. Tools, processes, talent, stack.
The only problem is people expecting niche experiences with large general service platforms.
Want to have engaging and enriching discussions about a topic? There's probably a website for that exact topic. It has a forum or IRC chat room and probably a mailing list. It might have a twitter/facebook account, but those aren't the channels you use if you're really involved.
Want to find those places that have engaging enriching discussions about topics? Stop looking at Facebook, Twitter, et al. That's not where it's happening. And my money is on it never happening. That's not what they're for.
Consumerism: Use something because it works (regardless of its age) and we'll mock you for not replacing it with something newer.
If you use these products and they work for you, awesome. You know who misses out on the benefits of you switching? Corporations.
So laugh at others for saving money while you spend half your paychecks on what's new and cool, just because it's new and cool. /rant
