The title for this post seems very incorrect. How can you have "lost" something you never had? He chose to not invest in Microsoft and live his life how he wanted and that somehow makes it out to him making poor choices. Notch is still a billionaire; is the person that wrote this a billionaire?

I worked a computer store back in the mid 2000s. We got an iMac in that had a busted CRT and the owner just wanted the data moved to a new machine and then gave us the old one to get rid of. I pulled it apart and installed Linux on the 233 Mhz PowerPC. It ran for years with just the power board and motherboard sitting open on my desk. I used it for a server and development environment through ssh. I finally turned it off and I recently pulled it out of the box and the PRAM battery had exploded and ruined the entire thing. Good memories though.

I use an Apple USB full-size keyboard from 2008. It is actually my favorite keyboard ever. After years of mostly using laptop keyboards I don't like full height keys anymore.

We pay for RHEL subscriptions but do both. We have large NAS systems but some machines, like our NFS servers, also have large internal RAID setups. We have bumped into EXT3 max file system size issues in the past and had to use XFS on some hosts.

Introducing /run 15 years ago

One of our supercomputing clusters does run with a shared / and a separate /var that is local to the machine. /var is local to the disk because the nodes are stateless but we would like a persistence store for things like logs.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago with Solaris and Irix. I used to use bash but the best shell available at work was tcsh. Now I have so much invested in tcsh that it is difficult to change back.

We recently just had a baby and your words are much more important than many people think. The number one hardest thing has been keeping time for our relationship. The baby get all the attention and time and there isn't much left for us. Try and find time for your wife. And it really does all go so very fast. It seems like just the other day she couldn't hold her head up and now she can almost walk! Every day is something new.

A system on a chip is a single chip that integrates all or almost all other chips on a motherboard into one chip. So this chip will have a cpu, graphics, memory controller, network controller, io such as usb. That way you can have basically one chip that is all or most of the computer. Sometime RAM and normally storage is separate chips but you basically end up with just a few chips on a very small, normally low power motherboard. It is great for system integrators as they don't need to spend as much development time to build new machines.

I would completely agree if companies had to setup their own shipping infrastructures to ship to these places; but they don't. Companies like FedEx, UPS, etc, already do this for you and they already ship to places like Alaska and Hawaii. Just charge the customer the extra shipping they are charged by the shipper and let it be at that.

Another question along the same lines is the question of email signing. As a sysadmin I receive large amounts of email asking me to change something on various systems and almost none of them are signed. How am I to know that the real person wants some configuration change or not? I see it as a big security problem. Doesn't mater how much I complain, no-one changes their ways.

Sadly they don't have OS X on any of the machines. It seems that maybe this has to do with HP and Microsoft being sponsors and OS X not being allowed to run on non-Mac hardware. Maybe someone can contact Apple and see if they can give an X-Serve or two.
