I’m always a bit skeptical about these sorts of things. Perhaps I’m just ignorant about the methods used.. but the amount of data we can get from the most distant known galaxy can’t be very much. How confident can we be that the shift in observed light or whatever is actually from the presence of Oxygen and not one of probably countless other causes, both known and unknown.

Can someone help me understand why it's a problem for companies to train these huge LLM on your copyrighted material? What exactly is the harm that is being done to the copyright holder?

I can understand why the New York Times (for example) wants to claim that a couple billion dollar companies have done it actual harm; but I am struggling to actually identify what it is.

Is there a reason not to have another “unbroken” chat instance check the output for violations? It seems like a simple “does the following response violate your rules?” would stop most of these “jailbreaks”.

Instead of giving directly to charities like St. Judes - he funds his foundation which gives to charities like St. Judes. When you give away $5B, wouldn't it be irresponsible to not give it to a foundation? And if you have your own foundation, wouldn't it be dumb to not give it to your own foundation? This seems like a nothing story; except that it's in vogue to hate Musk right now.

I probably wouldn’t use this to write code, but I could see it being really useful for navigating around a project.

“Go to line 35” “Open the model controller” “Show the get method and set method side by side”

I think the point was that it wasn’t a made up experiment. It was a real world problem.

For all the hype around these systems currently, it’s nice to see some places where it doesn’t work.

Yeah, also what's wrong with making a product first, marketing it, and seeing if it sells? No need for this landing-page-with-fake-pre-orders lying to your customers overhead.

The overhead of actually building the product is WAY more than just making a landing page.

Plus, knowing that there are people who are willing to give you money for a thing is very motivating.

Also, having pre-customers while you are building is a great way to know which parts of the product to focus on. The features you think are important may not be what your customers think.

Certainly there is a range of approaches in between vaporware and building in secret. But if you actually want to make money, you should start selling as soon as possible, even before it’s ready.

because we don’t have one yet

Part of the problem is that at this point we have no way of ever knowing if something is conscious or not. We assume that other humans are because they look like me, act like me, and are made of the same stuff; and I know that I am. But all I really have is your word that you are. Will that be enough from a computer? I can write a program right now that says it’s conscious, but it wouldn’t be. So how can we ever know?
