It's not very impressive, but I decided I wanted to get better at recognizing NHL jersey numbers and was frustrated with the options available to learn (out of date Sporcle quizs and the like), so I tossed together a flashcard game with the help of Claude.

It pulls data directly from the NHL to stay up-to-date with changes to the roster, but is otherwise a pretty straight-forward and basic sveltekit app.

I've toyed with using AI for stuff like this (my day job isn't coding related), and this was consistent with previous experiences where I found it helpful in some respects (especially all the css and stuff which I don't really know too well), but it could also get stuck and produce some awful messes trying to fix it. I pulled this together mostly over the course of a couple hours, though, which definitely wouldn't have happened if I did it from scratch.

Then he can't buy the tickets. People aren't born with a god-given right to get seasons tickets to Dodger's games. There are businesses that choose not to handle cash and only accept credit or debit payments. I need to agree to a credit card companies terms and conditions for that too. Is that unreasonable?

I wonder if they thought that since they were responding to an emergency, and they were given clearance to cross by ATC, that that would override normal procedures. Kind of like how emergency vehicles cross a red light all the time when responding to an emergency.

I think one major difference is that MPs are far less beholden to their party for reelection and it is not uncommon for them to cross the floor when they feel the interests of their constituents are not being represented by the governing (or opposing) party.

Yes, a PM with a whipped majority is tremendously powerful, but getting that whipped majority is not an easy task and requires significant politicking and negotiating within the party precisely because individual MPs are proportionately more powerful than legislators in the US.

Why would you assume that? This administration has trumpeted their intents continuously from the rooftop and delivered on their promises every time. Why do people continuously assume that this time, finally, reason and restraint will prevail?

Have you been paying attention? There are reports about hundreds of people going missing in ICE detention. Maybe they aren't being shoveled into mass graves, but if we don't where they are and can't reach them and ICE themselves don't know where they are because they no longer exist in their databases, is there any difference for their families?

And then don't be surprised when even more money flows to their opponents.

My reddit feed is predominately my local community subreddit and various hobbies/activities - mountain biking and cycling stuff, outdoors stuff, geology, swimming, some ttrpg stuff - and then interspersed with a few more random things that I try to keep with more of a positive tilt - todayilearned, bestof, EarthPorn - that sort of thing.

I do have a few programming subreddits, rust, sveltekit, and adventofcode, which mostly seem more newsy or avenues to help or learn about developments in that area. /r/rust does have an annoying tendency to get posts of some person new to rust telling people who are presumably already familiar with rust about what an amazing and transformative language it is, but those are pretty easy to identify and skip by.

I find Facebook and Instagram are both completely polluted by that type of content. Facebook used to be trying to feed me right-wing rage bait and I think actively blocking finally cleared my feed of most of it and now it's all thirst-trap stuff. At least it's figured out I'm gay compared to Instagram.

It depends on the terms of the transaction. Most business-to-business transactions would have the importer responsible for duties, but many, maybe the majority of business-to-consumer transactions have taxes & duties covered by the exporter and included in the final price which would typically reflect the additional taxes & duties in the prices. In those case, the exporter would be the one refunded.

I did a two week trip through Southern Utah and northern Arizona two years ago and it was amazing. I loved it, the scenery was incredible and I would love my parents to make the same trip to share what I experienced. They recently outfitted their truck with a camper in the back and have been enjoying long roadtrips in their retirement and it would be a perfect trip for them.

But they have zero interest in going. Part of it is fear and uncertainty about the situation there currently, but another part is just the sourness that the idea of visiting the US right now gives that kind of sucks the appeal out of such a trip.

There are other places they can visit, and Canada is indeed a lovely country in its own right, but I hope there is a time again where they can find joy in the idea of visiting the US and enjoying the beauty of the southwest before they are too old to really appreciate it.

There's a lot of value in transcripts of videos being provided next to the original content. It improves accessibility for a lot of people and helps out those of us who might be searching content or not in a place where they can watch a video but can read. Why would it be considered slop?

I don't know, it seems Bill Gates pretty quickly flushed any goodwill he had cultivated with the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation once the Epstein stuff came to light, although views of him before that point were certainly mixed still.

I think the difference with Chomsky is that he is in many ways a modern-day guru with adherents who are naturally resistant to viewing their teacher and leader in a negative light.

A lot of the current valuation is based on Elon drumming up investor expectations. As they start to lose their spot as market leaders in EV, Tesla's inability to deliver on what Elon promised will become more clear as their competitors level with and surpass them.

Moving to new, unproven markets is fruitful ground for someone like Elon to drum up expectation and hopefully keep distracting people from the fact that he's had very few recent successes to show for all the hype he receives.

I was talking to my uncle last September who is a chaplain in the US Army, and I was shocked by the disparity between what he understood was going on in the US and what I understood. That's not to say that I'm not influenced in certain ways either, but it really cemented my understanding that people in the US (and here in Canada and I'm sure other countries too) are operating within two entirely different realities.

He's not even what I would call MAGA, but it still seemed like a gulf that is impossible to bridge.

Human behaviour can be a confounding thing. There was some debate a while ago [1] about whether bike helmet use may actually lead more head injuries due to factors like drivers passing closer to helmeted riders vs. unhelmeted ones or riders riding more recklessly, among a tonne of other factors. I still prefer to wear a helmet, but its an interesting example of how difficult it can be to engineer human behaviour.

Another good example of this is how civil engineers adding safety factors into design of roads - lane widths, straighter curves, and so on - leading drivers to speed more and decreasing road safety overall.
