Getjar are hardly good guys themselves. They knocked my mobile web directory mjelly.com off their index a while ago even though it had been listed in there for years. This was because they claimed it was a competitor to getjar. They recently did the same with Opera.
You can try things like getjar.com which offer a cost per download model. Or list your app on my directory @ mjelly.com!

To date mobile sites and apps have really suffered from an inability to effectively use viral marketing. However, this is no longer the case - Heysan! is one of the mobile startups pioneering viral marketing on mobile. Big up!

Africa isn't completely befeft of large scale corporations - there are the big mobile phone companies Celtel, MTN, plus Naspers (Pay TV, newspapers, internet in SA, interests in online companies in Eastern Europe), the big mining operations, De Beers?
One question i have is how the accounting is done for the $200k profit, bearing in mind the app benefits from the wider business (Carsonified events etc). As a standalone app it might be paying more for marketing, legal/ accounting, management overhead etc

Just be a decent person - if you're at an event and talking to someone and another person is hovering near by, bring them into your conversation. Be friendly, try and help people etc

i dont think arrington understands mobile at all ... mobilecrunch has always been awful, this piece puts waaay too much weight on the iphone - its a tiny proportion of the mobile installed base.
i think you're wrong about Octopart - they are optmising around individual part terms e.g. http://octopart.com/category--Integrated+Circuits--Semicondu... not for a generic "electronic parts" ranking. Their recent user data indicates this has been pretty successful - basically SEO - adding categories to search.
Hey maybe the idea could still have worked but in a radically different form e.g. some kind of about.com/ adsense content syndication hoover. Maybe it was the focus on high quality content/ journalism that was the wrong direction - I'd encourage you to think about other ways it might work if you started from first principles.
