The issue is that this will be another vision pro. The issue is that every year, we take device and services price increase (which of course nobody can do anything about because Apple-Google is a cartel based in the US where consumer protection is not even in the dictionary but that's a different topic probably) and nobody keeps track of just how much these things cost for a "not an influencer / person who works in tech / friend of the president" household.

I feel this post is blind to many of the secondary side effects of this "shortage". The rapid increase in prices and delivery times is having deleterious effects on all things tech - everything from phones to smart appliances and all sorts of gadgets has moved into unreachable price levels.

Just imagine, if the rumours are true and Apple's 'foldable' phone costs 2500€ or more - who is going to buys this? So much of Apple's ecosystem depends on enough users consuming services, buying apps and using their phones to facilitate digital interactions. I've been waiting for 2 months to get a new mac mini for our office lab, and the Studios have moved into "we can't really justify this expense" price range.

So the framing that AI is inevitable or projections that put the world into a year or more of this "scarcity", where people can no longer afford non-entry level gadgets, are just naive IMO.

Imagine how cool it would be if actual competition prevents Anthropic or OpenAI from becoming an Apple/Google kind of cartel. I don’t care if it comes from China or not.

Also worth nothing that if you’ve verified your ID on LinkedIn or anything that uses Persona or some other flavour of Palantir - the US already has all this data and much more.

This is false: you’re tied to both tangled (unless you want to self host a forge, which if you did you wouldn’t have picked tabgled) and Bluesky for your login to keep working (unless you want to self host a complex constellation of social media components).

As a mid sized business in touch with other mid-sized businesses - the burden you speak of doesn't exist. If you read the directive and others like it carefully, you will find they’re well integrated into reporting you already do. Each member state also adapts these to best fit their local legislation.

Nothing Bluesky does is really independent. This is such a transparent playbook and yet folks keep falling for a couple of open source repos and whatever hot takes Dan Abramov posts to reframe “instances” to “open social” bs.

In addition to the challenged Xcode, just using Swift seems to require a lot more tokens for both coding and dealing with build/platform quirks. Probably not super significant on indie scale but for anything more robust, it builds up quickly.

React Native and Flutter seem to be much more predictable for the bots (and more fun for humans, since they have actual hot reload).

I tried it but the difference to Opus didn’t seem to justify the extra cost and stress around these limits.

Have you seen notifications on iOS? There are even notifications for the notifications.

But this type of notification I believe is delivered via iMessage and email. So unless you’re actively using iMessage or your icloud email then chances are all this is practically invisible.

I think the main takeaway is that the concept of such verifications is fundamentally incompatible with privacy. Today we have a simple "are you an adult" check but who is to say we wouldn't want further levels of segmentation (legal age to drive, age to allow health insurance etc)?

And this just one signal. Nobody likes the EU cookie/consent prompts but what they've shown us is that most websites are perfectly happy to fingerprint you the moment you step on their pages, and then share/broker your activity with hundreds and thousands of "legitimate interest" partners of theirs.

So the real-world equivalent of this situation is that you walk on the street and whenever you need to wait for a traffic light, board a bus or the tube, go into a shop, etc... you have a security person who needs to faceID(or fingerprint) you and make you wait until they find a match of your profile... and then they ask you to present your ID (which you have to carry at all times) but hey, it's private because you need to enter your PIN for them to read the chip.

I can't verify if the author's attempts are even real tbh. Sounds like they were creating problems for themselves just to see how much it would cost to get sort them out. For a GmbH you also want to get an accountant and just delegate the whole process to people who can guide you before you hurt yourself.

Yes indeed, the limit is 50 which is of course enough to fully profile "regular people" who only have a handful of apps.
