I've quit this site.
I'm afraid you're looking for something that just isn't there. Now this feature request is a good idea in my opinion, that's why I'm suggesting to upvote it on the Feature Requests page and not just make another post that will get killed and ignored.

Noobs keep asking for this feature almost daily now and pg kills the post every time, because you're not supposed to ask like this. Feature requests go in the feature requests page at the link in the bottom. Or just upvote the link by gauravgupta, it's on that page.

(I'm learning J and other APL derivatives right now by myself by experimenting with the J docs and pinging the amazing people at the J software forums).
This situation has no parallels with 'the fall of Rome' whatsoever, unless I'm misreading your intent.
Hardly, there is a lot of arc that you are not seeing that really powers the voting and other features of the site like spam detection and voting ring detection. It's similar to the code at http://ycombinator.com/arc/arc3.tar but there are significant modifications as well.
HN does not use Google Analytics or any other kind of analytics tracking for that matter. I think they used to use mixpanel and had the mixpanel logo at the bottom of the homepage before though.

Take anything from loper-os with a massive grain of salt, he is a long-term troll who has been writing these sorts of wistful but ultimately empty posts for several years now. Calling everything and everyone stupid and bloated and yearning for the good old days is his thing. I only mention this because some HN readers might not be fully aware of his history.

Yes, they do. Who do you think contributes to the Linux kernel everyday, only individual hackers all over the world pushing FL/OSS ? The vast majority of the contributors are big-tech-co affiliated who come from places like Red Hat, Intel, IBM, Novell, Oracle, AMD, Google, and more. Individuals and those not wishing to state their affiliation/place-of-work are only about 18% of the contributors to Linux.
Btw, this is part of the issue some people have with Ubuntu, in that it makes no contributions upstream to the kernel like Red Hat, Novell and others do. A Red Hat Greg DeKoenigsberg even said on OSNews once that "Canonical is a marketing organization masquerading as an engineering organization."[1]
Python's father Guido van Rossum and other core contributor are employed by Google and other big tech companies to work on Python.
Mozilla is mostly by Mozilla people, however it's basically alive because of the funding and ad deals it has with Google. Without that, it couldn't continue.

It is explicit, apparently FB is using OpenID which is information supplied by you linking the two accounts, completely opt-in. Besides, it's hardly tracking you with this feature, a boolean: is user logged in to Gmail? Yes|No
If yes, user can be verified quickly and reset their password in an easier fashion for them. Facebook is trying to make things smoother and not making you jump into your email to click a link or copy some token id or something. This is good UX.
That's pretty neat, I wish they'd publish on how they did this so others could use it. Sounds like another great way to remove friction for the user, always a great thing.
A lot of people have claimed to have stopped reading HN publicly but sorta just came back anyways. Even mattmaroon is around now.

This is just a throwaway account and not the one under my real name. I've been reading Hacker News since before it was even called that. My "real name" account is over 4 years old.
Google+ is almost where Friendfeed was in 2008, awesome. All we need now is feed and service imports and we've got a done deal.
I think this is a more recent development actually, that started in the last year particularly. Hacker News had a much more business and startup friendly environment, but the anti-capitalist attitude is a sentiment that was found mostly at the bottom, downvoted for their mostly incoherent rants. It's unfortunate that their numbers have gained.
I think one of the biggest signs to always look for is how many comments a story has. You'll find the older, better commenters tend to be more conservative with their comments and only joining the discussion when they have something worthwhile to contribute.
Hacker News has grown a lot in the last year, and obviously many of the new users are people who don't actually run their own businesses. They view making money as somehow abhorrent. The same kind of mindset you see in these new occupy wall street protests.
But lest I take us off on a too political tangent, I'll end it here. Politics does not belong on Hacker News.
If we can quit the absurd analogies all over this thread for a minute, can you point me to why Monsanto is so evil in your eyes? Other than a Vanity piece, it seems everyone has come to a preconcluded fact that Monsanto is "evil" somehow.
Cloudant is a business, and this is great for their financials, as well as for furthering the research in their tech stack. From reading it, I'm sure many on Hacker News use similar tools that will benefit from the research done by Cloudant.
Yes, because Hacker News is for civilized, rational discussion. Not '+1 !'s, not analogies to the Nazi regime, not a litany of profanity to a hard-working young startup, and not more hivemind think from Reddit. The kind of hivemind that downvotes any contrary opinion and upvotes the tasteless, content-free posts you see at the top. We can discourse in more substantial words than "F- that!". Multiple '?!?' becoming more common aren't a good sign.
Agreed, I don't think I've ever seen so many 'fucks' and similar words used on an HN thread before. For some reason all these new posters are tying every company which they have a grudge against with Monsanto, and by association, with Cloudant. Amusing to read all the pent up angered comments, with any dissenting ones heavily downvoted. Did /r/politics arrive to stay? What happened here?
Cloudant is providing an amazing infrastructure to power a large client, and with that, they grow as a business and innovate in technology. I don't see anything wrong with congratulating them for their securing of this great partnership, and I find the response here from the mainly younger accounts very disappointing.

Sure, no one's saying Jobs will be forgotten to the sands of time any time soon. Yet 1000 years is a little bit of a stretch, especially when you try to size him up next to the ancient greats.

The ideas and intellectual breakthroughs of the ancient Hellenese that have been passed down to the world through their books are infinitely of more importance than the work of Steve Jobs. This is just not a comparable matter.
