I will disagree with that from experience. I'm from a small (under a million) country with a surplus of lawyers... it's corrupted them in the sense that there's not enough work around to make money from being efficient, so they legendarily drag out the cases they can, and there's near-monthly trials of cases of theft from trust accounts. So, no "actually".

That's some food for thought. My issue with programming courses is they ask you to memorize the commands then use them; most programming is about creating the logic then QA'ing with some data. Excel is data-first and becomes more like a game, trying different approaches with a clear picture of the end in mind. It's easier to persevere.

IMHO, the journalists' mistake was lazily relying on easily accessible Western orgs instead of partnering with Eastern-based journalists to examine stories coming out of China. I've been following the South China Morning Post since the first week of January and so far all the observations coming from their experts has been refuted by the CDC first, then confirmed a month or two later. They are just as smart, highly motivated and had at least 10x more casework to examine. Tldr; if you want to make better predictions, compare expert opinion against news closer to the source.

I wouldn't say that they should have shut things down preemptively, but their job is to have up-to-date contingency plans and be ready to implement them when thresholds are crossed.

According to a report out of China, we are already experiencing the mutated version which is less lethal (0.6%) than the original (5%). I am hopeful that as we identify and remove the strains causing more terrible effects via prevention and hospitalization, the remaining strains will mutate themselves away in a year or two.

There's an understandably big focus on mortality/non-mortality. It seems that people are classified recovered and sent home after 3 to 14 days of tests are clear (depending on the hospital) but I haven't seen estimates for full recovery from symptoms and fatigue afterwards.
