Fair point. Let's say it's 2x, in which case Snapchat still exceeds Instagram. I think we're splitting hairs here, I certainly agree that the chart is misleading in a very real way (primarily due to how Snapchat is reporting uploads/shares), but the point it asserts is still valid re: Facebook's offer.

Why should students who aren't able to get paid internships be denied the right to have an unpaid internship? I would not be where I am today were it not for unpaid internships.

Some people would be helped by mandating all internships be paid, but these are not the people who need the most help. The people who need the most help are the ones that would be cut off from any chance at early work experience by such a system.

The idea of everyone having a paid internship is nice, but many places will simply stop offering them if unpaid interns aren't an option.

Also, no one is forcing these students to work anywhere. Yes, market forces drive them towards an internship, but there are many internships in the market.

If unpaid internships were banned or otherwise made illegal, companies could still bring in students as volunteers, which are unpaid. They would still get the same experience and be in exactly the same position, except now they are no longer eligible for college credit and certain legal protections. How is that a better system?

Are there any compelling arguments why unpaid internships should be made illegal? If not illegal, then how should/could they be reformed?

What you're describing doesn't seem lean. Why "build a thing" if you haven't first identified a demand for it? A landing page can be a part of identifying this demand.

Airbnb vs * 15 years ago

This is a very fair point, I think in some cases people are primarily interested in functionality as opposed to design.

I think your understanding of how the service works is spot on. There's reputation system of sorts since you can comment on people you've stayed with. If anyone ever got a single bad review, I imagine no one would ever stay there again. Airbnb themselves don't do any of the screening.

Seconding the dumping of the TV. I've heard nothing but good things about the Culture series so that's something I'll have to get to soon. And I can never recommend the original 6 dune books enough, simply legendary.

I would specify that I only read science fiction, and occasionally fiction that most would classify as "classics". Beyond that, I don't read any fiction.

Exploring one particular topic with a series of books sounds rather interesting to be honest. I think on HN in particular it wouldn't surprise me to find that most people are reading more non-fiction than fiction.

Can you give an example of a topic and some related books that you enjoyed?

This is one of those situations where I'm just happy to see a chunk of money going to a school that I'm quite fond of, and that I am confident will spend the money wisely.

As a citizen, I see a transaction of private equity between a private citizen and a private research institution, ergo none of my business.
