Recently came across the NymVPN project (https://nym.com/), which makes use of WireGuard like fabric and a blockchain/smart-contracts, that implements a mixnet to obfuscate header and timing information of packets in transit. Is advertised to be more secure and better at ensuring privacy/anonymity than Tor. The service has been public for about a year now, but the interview with Harry Haplin, a founder of Nym, provides interesting insight into both motivation and what goals Nym is trying to achieve.

Wow, lots of generalisations are being made in the comments. I'm German and have lived in the south-west for most of my life. I hope it goes without saying that Germany is a big country, both by space and population. We have some very dense urban areas (Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin come to mind) but also very open "arsch der welt" hinterlands with villages of 100 people or fewer. This creates huge diversity in standard of living conditions as well as life experiences (and expectations). Some places are better than others, this isn't unusual. Thus, many experiences that people have written about can't be applied with any certainty to large swaths of the populace.

Regarding the DW article, yes language is a constraint and does cause issues with finding/keeping a job and integrating into one's area. Believe it or not, this can also affect us locals too [1]. The bureaucracy is often _difficult_ and people behind the counter can be unhelpful.

We definitely suffer from institutional inflexibility, leading to absurd situations, for example with our population of economically active refugees who will probably be forced to leave, which will lead to an even bigger job market deficit and possible economic decline [2], or how we blunder large scale projects like Stuttgart 21 (or 35 or 70?!?!)[3]. The German concept of identity and unity is also very complex [4,5], and sadly this reflects somewhat on our interaction with migrants. Couple this with complex domestic and international economic and political issues [6,7], and we now have a situation that is far from ideal for people coming here to work and build a life.

All this can be difficult to deal with for you who are planning to come here or those who already live here, and I really wish that weren't the case. Please don't be discouraged, we want and need you, for more than just helping to prop up our economy and welfare state (by the way, thank you!). I believe that the diversity of experiences and ideas you bring is a boon to our future.

Yup, use it regularly in order to jump through networks where a VPN/Wireguard setup is not possible. It can also forward DNS requests and handle local NS operations reasonably well, such that it can be used as a low-key split-VPN client (i.e. only forwards traffic for a specific domain or IP range without redirecting any other traffic). Note that for integration with `systemd-resolved`, one needs to jump through a few hoops, but I feel its works very nicely: https://github.com/sshuttle/sshuttle/issues/688#issuecomment....

Nice! The project also has a 16-bit variant https://github.com/luke8086/gentleos, not clear if it works on 8086 IBM PC, but I'll give it a go. Been looking for a reason to power up my IBM PC again.

Aside, it blew my mind that these cubesats are using sdcards for storage, is this intended for production or only now during the development phase? Is sdcard storage safe from electromagnetic interference in space, including solar wind?

Wow, just began reading the article on a mobile device without an adblocker and am shocked to find that I don't follow it... There are so many in line adverts and image links to other articles, which share the same typographic style, it isn't clear to me what text is part of the article or an advert. It mind boggling that people even read this given the horrid UI.

This reminds me of a scene from Ready Player One, where the evil exec explains to the shareholders that they can fill like 70% (I don't remeber the exact number) of a player's field of view with adverts before the player suffers from seizures. Ad blocking might become health critical into the _not_ so distant future.

There is a third option, spoil your ballot. It's invalid then, yes, but it's a statistic that the election/party analysts will track.

Up to a certain threshold a spoiled ballot might be considered a mistake, but once over that threshold, it could me something more. For instance, that voters are not interested by the policies of any parties on the ballot.

Wow, I was under the impression that atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) was extremely inefficient. I don't have any numbers but things like [1][2] seem to indicate that AWH is currently not very useful.

The paper doesn't seem to (if I read it correctly) actually address this directly, instead it talks about how much energy is needed to extract water at different relative humidity levels and factors in the potential energy generated through solar panels. It also looks at the usefulness of this process given factors such as existing access to clean water (or lack thereof) and population. I didn't looking beyond the 'Methods' section, I hope I didn't miss anything here.

You mean the protocol? Well it can't be sold as the standard is open and there is (as far as I know) no reference implementation which include special/exclusive features which might have some intrinsic IP value.

I think the extensibility of the protocol together with some proprietary features layered on top might have value though. I can't think of an example at the moment.

An alternative is to use Paperkey [1], which creates a text based encoding of your private key that can be scanned in and OCR'd. I believe there is also some redunceny similar to using a QR code. This method is designed for long term storage.

This domain has been registered since 1995, I don't know who owns it. I've been using it for years to check that my internet connection/DNS is working.

I thought the UK volantarily changed its measurement units (and currency counting) to metric back in the 70s to make it easier to trade with other countries. Wouldn't this change be counterproductive?
