twinBASIC and radbasic are two projects trying to clone it. But it's definitely harder to do than either anticipated. I still support VB6 apps (some of which are bumping up against the limit of the EXE size!) and I'd love a replacement, but it's slow going!

"Classic" was never very stable to begin with, and seems to be getting less stable every monthly patch cycle. Decades-old problems remain unfixed, and "new" Outlook still doesn't have all the features of the old one (or compatibility with in-house programs that use MAPI integration, or COM add-ins). "Classic" must have been such a spaghetti-fied mess that they thought they couldn't actually fix it at all and needed to replace it. But I'm not sure that's really the solution... is it ever?

You absolutely can run 32bit Solaris in qemu SPARC emulation. 64bit is not there yet unfortunately. But definitely dd this and get it virtualized!

Ah, classic nihilism. I first encountered it in high-school literature class reading Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons". Good times. (Of course now you'd probably get a quick TikTok explanation and that's all.) I probably mix in a bit of that, a bit of "apatheism", some epicureanism (the original version), and a dash of solipsism (just a dash mind you), and I find myself pretty comfortable. Going to lots of jam band concerts helps too.

It's true, though I try not to do this, I really try. But it's so easy for some kids (like my 11-year old firstborn) to just go play Roblox or Pokemon or watch stupid shorts on YouTube unless I'm enforcing some activity for him. And yeah I have screen time restrictions. It's a constant battle with him. We spend quality time with him for sure, and the taekwondo and drum lessons are great extra activities. But he only has one best friend he has regular hanging out time with, and one neighbor kid he knows that he plays with due to less people around us having kids. Family has spread out too, also due to needing to have dual incomes and car culture. So yeah all these contribute to the birth rate going down, but it's not so much parents fault entirely as it is the modern world's.

This could basically replace what we're doing with MAPI.

My problem is I support so many applicants which use MAPI calls to create emails to Outlook, and they haven’t and may never add support for MAPI to the web-based version. I kinda thing one reason they are trying to kill the classic Outlook is it’s getting harder to find programmers willing to maintain it.

Exactly. I also have a 6-year old child with severe autism. He's a really happy and playful child, he actually makes good eye contact, especially when having fun, enjoys hiking and swimming, and loves affection. But he simply cannot communicate effectively, either with words (which is a mixture of jargon and echolalia, though he's definitely starting to read words!) or an AAC device. He has great balance and likes climbing and playing on playgrounds, but he can't tie his shoes or use a pencil/pen or a lot of other fine-motor skills. If there were a "cure", we'd take it - it would absolutely make his life better! But that's highly unlikely, so we are getting him as much therapy as we can, and hope that he can have enough independence after we're gone to continue to have a happy life.

I view my lawn the same way as the author, in that I do want there to be a good amount of biodiversity there. I let everything grow in the yard sections and even have parts that I leave almost totally wild without even cutting. But I also don't want weeds growing in the cracks between my paving stones, or poison ivy growing anywhere, and there's not a whole lot that works on knotweed! So I don't use a ton of Roundup but I do use a bit here and there. In moderation is again key but doesn't seem to fit into anyone's ideological framework these days.

Sometimes the title itself generates a kind of excitement in your brain and you start answering it before you even read the blog post. And in this case as others have noticed, it's not exactly answered in the way some of us would.

I do know I've thought about this, and even had one of those "moments of realization" on the drive home from my first lecture on DCTs, where I thought I could transform all of human history from time domain to frequency domain and how this would bring out certain patterns and truths that could not be understood otherwise. I swear I wasn't on drugs! (Though the lecture was in fact given by Prof. Marshall of Rutgers, the father of the lyricist for the rock band Phish, at whose concerts I have imbibed certain substances... but I digress.) The frequency domain is just as "real" as any other mathematical construction that can help us understand everything.

This will be great for productivity!
