As some who started similarly as an indie developer (albeit mostly for macOS) back in 2005 and still doing it (on the side now), it's a dream and lifestyle that are very desirable for me since (similarly to the OP) I've learned that people made a living this way in the Mac world.

I left a well-paying engineering day job in 2009 while earning only $500/month on my indie apps in the hope of growing the business. The Mac/iOS developer conferences scene was great at that time ( NSConference, anyone) and I made a lot of connections and dev friends with whom I'm in contact still many years later. The dev community is still pretty good and helping.

Marketing apps has become a real hard problem these days, though, because most of the press doesn't care about apps anymore, unless they are from the big corp, or they just focus on Apple's own news and rumours.

Still, it's very fulfilling to see people who use your apps and recommend them.

Been using Bunch.ai for daily tips for quite a while. Some were very helpful. I wasn't so good at keeping up with new features and tips, though. This will give me another reason to try it. Hopefully, this new feature is as helpful as it can be.

Trickster is something I use every day, many times a day. ScreenFlow is great for screencasts.

I see, so you're just writing the bridge code yourself. OK, I do the same in Objective-C++, so at least it gives me an object-based interface, as well. But saving this step and having a direct Swift <-> C++ would be helpful.

I always wondered why there is no "is" in this phrase. Why is it not "This page is intentionally left blank". I hoped this article would answer it, but no. It does show the is in [] to mark that's it's kinda missing. Anyone knows why there's no "is"? Does it ring wrong to you without "is"?

Not being American and not being interested in baseball, I never knew that Yogi Berra was a famous baseball player. All I knew was a quote of his that I liked. I thought he really was a yogi. It is this quote:

I believe that it's not intended to be used like that (promo codes are also limited to 100 per application version now).

Also, this would require the developer to find a way to charge people outside of the store. In that case, it's almost half way to setting up a full direct store with a direct version.

There is benefit to having a direct version (all our applications do) but many developers today don't want to set this all up. It's quite a lot of work and perhaps the developer is not interesting in spending time on that. Moreover, he might not even be sure if the app is successful enough to invest time into this work.

It's sold through the Mac App Store only right now, so it's limited to what the Mac App Store allows, unfortunately.

Maybe in the future, if it goes well, the developer might consider selling outside the Mac App Store, and this have more flexibility. I have no knowledge of his plans on that matte,r though.

From what I see, it's actually selling for USD$19.99. The $24.99 is in Australian Dollars.

For what it's worth, LinkedIn has different wording on this page for people who have an account and those who don't. For people who have an account already, the button says "Connect". For those who don't it says "Add to Network". I agree that even "Add to Network" may mean to "my network", which is misleading.

If you can't boot into Safe mode (I couldn't on a rMBP with 10.8.3), you can perform the following sequence to make it boot to Safe mode (source https://discussions.apple.com/message/21366643#21366643):

With regards to Digital Ocean. My server there which I installed about a month ago (Amsterdam location), with 2GB of RAM is not responding for several hours now. Including not possible to reboot. Support says they're aware of the issue. But it's been several hours like this now. Never had with with Linode in my 3 years with them. Guess I'll be moving this server back.

Shouldn't the title be "Google Glass to Hit Developers' Heads This Month"?

It's certainly a great alternative for Apple's maps, which lack data in many parts of the world. It also appears to be vector maps, like Apple's, unlike Maps in iOS 5.

Some things that lack or incomplete in the meantime:

- iPad version, which is less critical, of course. - Access to contact addresses - Street view doesn't load high-resolution images when zoomed in.

The performance on iPhone 4S is good enough but zooming in and out is sometimes too fast and hard to do with precision.

Still, I already replaced Apple's Maps with this one of my iPhone's home screen.

Interesting idea there, about delaying by a measure and not running for the shortest delay since it's still not good enough.

Lots of fun. Always wanted a live Internet jamming solution for a band. Now, if only it could work with real instruments plugged to the computer. But the network delays make it impossible. Waiting for the day when bits from Europe to the US won't take 100-150ms to travel. Not sure it's going to happen anytime soon, though.

I know Graham. And he's both a great guy and a serious developer. I've also read his book and though I've not yet finished it, I've seen this table, as it's in the beginning.

Having read this blog post, I now respect him even more. Both for the intellectual honesty and for his efforts to try and reconcile the data in the table, with all its consequences.

I wish more people (including me) were this dedicated and willing to admit mistakes.

Maybe that's what makes him a specialist in software security, of all things.

Having version 2 as in-app purchase means your version 2 app has to include version 1 in it. Good luck with implementing that. What if my version 2 is a major rewrite and I change software architecture or want to use new features. Can you imaging writing an application with 2 different interfaces, database formats and feature sets, just to make it possible to upgrade with in-app purchase? No, thank you.

TextExpander 4 is one of major examples. TextExpander 3 is still in store but version 4 is only available direct from Smile. There are also ClipStart (I think that's the name, a video management app), SourceTree (version control) and probably some other. More will follow, I believe.

There is already such an app, Bodega, which was launched before Mac App Store. There was (and probably is) another one from the developers of iusethis.com

As a Mac developer who's also affected by the mandatory sandboxing requirement, I fully agree. One of our applications, Trickster, doesn't work sandboxed (being a system utility) as is and we're in this situation where we have customers on the Mac App Store who can't receive updates anymore. Needless to say, neither us nor our customers (who'll mostly blame us) are happy about this.
