I think the point is that if the same shooters had only more 'normal' guns available to them, they would not have been able to cause nearly as much death and injury before being stopped.

Relatedly, there should be a standard rack form factor in the size category of NUCs and Mac Minis, rather than having to go all the way to the 19 inch monster racks that medium to large businesses use. If it were nailed down to the point of being able to blind mate (just learned that term from Oxide's article here!) gear into it, that would be kind of perfect.

I recall hearing that Google and Bing have a nearly insurmountable lead in terms of raw ability to index the web, and that all other "alternative" search engines are using Google and/or Bing under the hood. I've set up feeds that watch many of the popular instances, using score thresholds (a weighted sum of boosts, likes and replies), so that the feeds just get posts that break a previous threshold I had set (the point being to just see some of the breakout popular trending posts and links, sort of rolling my own algorithm). Every time a post appears in these feeds, I up the threshold again, to a bit under the score of that new post.

In a downward trend, I might reasonably expect that this set of feeds I've set up would go quiet, as new posts fail to hit the high water mark I had set at the peak. Instead, my experience over the past couple months has been the opposite. Breakout posts are getting scores that have kept me pushing my thresholds higher and higher. I don't know what this says about overall usage and engagement, but I think it at least suggests that in certain ways related to popular posts, it's continuing to go up and to the right.

So the area of disagreement is that his view is rosy...?

Twitter should 'steal' support for ActivityPub.

That is, join the fediverse. Stop being a walled garden. That seems passé now that we have millions of people able to follow, @-mention and reply from one domain to another.

Twitter's business model is already completely chucked and will need a ground-up rethink, so we might as well build from this more modern starting point.

At this point, twitter's goal (whether headed by Elon or someone else) should be to join the fediverse, and be accepted by other large instances for federation with them.

Basically it's a set of open standards (in particular ActivityPub) developed to do a decentralized version of what twitter and similar social apps do. And no lock-in to a commercial platform or app or protocol.

I think it just took some parts of the media a few days to sort through the noise and pick up what the most important developments actually were, and perhaps get the necessary confirmations on the meaningful developments (and lack of confirmation on the wrong ones).

It takes any profession time to correct mistakes and get the story right, but the media have the unenviable task of trying to do that very very quickly.

This preference makes more sense I think in cases where the primary source is a company touting its own product, where a media report would be more objective. Then again, maybe you could view this instance as the FTC touting its own product too :)

You're right, it's not going to change you from liberal to conservative. But it absolutely could change how how you feel about Elon Musk and your interest in buying a Tesla.

I'm not sure how many coal-rolling giant-pickup-driving climate-denying MAGA types would be interested in Teslas just because Elon has started pandering to them.

The takeaway for me is that anyone who doesn't like large centralized social networks having and using this kind of influence over the dissemination of information, whether because you didn't like twitter's earlier management or because you don't like its new management by Elon, or some other reason, should be cheering the recent growth in the fediverse of decentralized social networking sites.

fwiw, I was not editorializing when submitting the headline. I just used the headline from the post I was linking to. I know hacker news sometimes rewrites headlines and remember thinking that they might decide to do that in this case, though I see that it has so far stayed the same.

with the rise of mastodon in the past week [1] I feel twitter is already yesterday's news. It serves no purpose. It has lost whatever cachet it had. The world of the Fediverse and ActivityPub and Mastodon and similar implementations is the final escape from walled gardens and the horses have already run out of the barn.
